Went to Calder a few times in early 70's it rained so hard one time you could'nt see the horses at all not even at the finish line. I hate to see any track close down.

Went to Calder a few times in early 70's it rained so hard one time you could'nt see the horses at all not even at the finish line. I hate to see any track close down. I was down there in the 70's also. I remember John Tammaro legging up Mike Gonzalez on a Carol and Steve Stable runner. (why do I remember that ......Carol was a looker. She had that 36-24-36 figure with the short mini shirt and the long legs. (certain memories just get embedded ) Ran into Pete Axhelm there also. Those were the hey days when the circuit still existed. (GP,Hialeah,Calder) We were lucky to have experienced racing during some of its best days. Now...it will be the future site of a logistics warehouse.

Remember when they had a synthetic course and after a few months they covered it in sand?
1971 MIAMI, Aug. 7 (AP)—Horse men at Calder Race Course voted today to cover the syn thetic Saf‐T‐Turf racing strip with dirt or sand.
The tally, was 569‐433 in favor of covering the track, and Elmer Vickers, Calder's general manager and vice pres ident, said the job would be done during a 12‐day break in the meeting beginning Sept. 7.
Each horseman who is running horses at the meeting was given one vote for each horse in his stable, with a maximum vote of 20. Trainers stabled at Tropical Park voted, 130 to 80, not to cover the Calder track, but trainers stabled at Calder voted, 489.303, to have the track covered.
