Del Mar is Del Graveyard for closers at 10 f.
They've run 12 such races over the past 10 years -- two BC Classics and 10 Pacific Classics. Seven of 12 winners were 1st at the second call. None was worse than 3rd.
Since 2015, horses that were 1-2-3 at the second call are 36-12-7-6. That's 100% win, 69% ITM.
4th or worse? 50-0-5-6. 0% win, 22% ITM.
5th or worse? 38-0-1-3. 11% ITM.

okay, found the post. Wll look into this % ITM thing, since 69% is rather convincing.

There are at least two things at play here, first and foremost, the stretch is pretty short (applies to both dirt and turf races (though as with pretty much everywhere it is easier to close on the turf), and the angle of the turns. If you are going to close on the turf, you will need to find a seam to run through as opposed to winding up and closing wide- at least generally speaking.
