The Jockey Club is projecting a North American registered Thoroughbred foal crop of 17,300 in 2025. This represents 700 fewer foals than the 2024 foal crop estimate of 18,000. Practical Joke had the highest number of mare’s bred in 2024 with 277 followed by Justify (263), Gunite (256), Golden Pal (209), Elite Power (203), Uncle Mo (202), Gun Runner (200), Pappacap (200), Taiba (200), Vekoma (200). jockeyclub.com/Default.asp?section=Resources&area=10&story=1481I had to look up Pappacap's record. 1 maiden win in his first 2yo start at 5F in 58.40 and 1 stakes win in his second 2yo start at 6F in 1.11.66. He ran 10 more times (9 stakes) at 2 and 3 and never won again. What type of foal are you expecting for your $12,500 fee?

The trajectory is disturbing. Since 2002 the foal count(national) has been cut by more than half. California by two thirds.
