What are the reasons for taking races off the turf today?
I have a hard time with the decision if 'safety' is one of the reasons.
I have to think that if 'safety' was a reason, then they should have no races run on the turf.

I won't speak for NYRA, but I'd think that they are trying to keep the turf courses from getting too degraded after recent heavy rains, with 10 more days of racing after today. The reason there is one race still on the grass today is because it is a 'Listed" stakes race, and they will always try to run stakes races on the intended surface, so they aren't downgraded by the Graded Stakes Committee.
Golfers will be familiar with all the divots you'll see at a practice tee, or on the course at a commonly reached distance in the fairway. Horseshoes make a soft turf course, and even a firm one, take a similar beating each time they run over it. NYRA will move the temporary rails on the turf courses throughout the meet, to conserve the inside portions of the courses. Temporary rails can be set at 9, 18, and 27 feet.

the courses are tested for moisture content.I don't know the exact threshold, but if it doesn't fall into the "safe"range they are off.

Will be interesting to see how much the handle is down at the end of the meet with so many turf races lost .
