The late money certainly didn’t go on the 6 horse.

Can you imagine betting at 2/5 and getting 13/1?

The first picture shows the odds and the minutes to post along the top. The 6 horse went from 2/5 with -1 minute to 13/1 at the off.
The second picture is the mutuel payoffs.
Tiny pools but I thought it was kind of a neat example.

The "late money" actually came off the 6. Not sure what the takeout is, but I used 20%. With 1 minute to post, 6-1 meant $49 or just less was on him to win. When he went to 1/5 next flash, he got at least $700 of the $740 that was added to the pool. At the close, He had less than $200 to win on him, so while money was poured in elsewhere, someone corrected their simulcast play and that $700ish came back out of the pools.
One track I enjoy playing is Finger Lakes. They must allow the automated computer wagering that floods the pools with money in the final second of betting. Nothing like seeing your horse at 5-1 as the final horse is being loaded into the gate with $34000 in the win pool and 5 seconds until the break....then 6/5 on the screen as they're going into the first turn with $51000 in the win pool. On the other hand, there was a horse I liked in a race, but not at 7/5. 5/2 or 3-1 would have been a go for me. I went for value instead with a 3-1 shot that was my second choice. They break....and 7/5 turns into 7/2 and my 3-1 turns into 8/5. 7/2 jogs and while the automated guys didn't smash that one, I wound up on the wrong end.
I hate automated last second wagers....

I just play the horses, so I cap them w/out looking at odds. Sometimes I get lucky as the horses I like often turn out to be horses other people didn't see and go off at long odds.
For me looking at the tote is looking at the very players whose opinions I am playing against in the parimutuel pools. Not sure I want to do that, as I happen to think they are wrong pretty often?
But if horse I did identify is utter chalk, I just pass the race entirely. I am not someone who puts $200 down on a horse, so it's hard to eke out a profit if you aren't putting down big wagers when playing the chalk.
Seems like it would work well for the computer robotic wagering teams who are getting rebated though.
What is wrong with early money? I have many time been standing at the ticket machine and see "the barn help" wagering before races start.......a few times I looked over their shoulders and nailed a very good win. After the windows open, they are already back at the barn working.
