Day 19
Week 4 is in the books with Bert Convy leading the main and highest priced winners contests and TC leading the most and lowest priced winners contests. The Sunday after the Whitney is normally a snoozer but Jacckk8 was determined not to stay too long on the Quiet Side ($9.50) by kaching in after the opener. It’s very unusual to see so many contestants selecting a 1/9 shot but it happened today in the second race and I’m not sure whatever’s Next ($2.10) for Badactor, Bitowisdom and TC. Meanwhile CindyLouJazz was like a Bossmanmakinbossmoves ($9.00) by breaking the glass ceiling in the third. Kick A Buck ($5.40) was deemed not to be worth $2 in the fourth while In Our Time ($5.90) similarly did not appear in our daily roster in the fifth.
Spiderjohn has made a slow start this year but it’s a marathon not a sprint and Yougottahavehope ($13.00) especially if you have the winner of the sixth. It’s not often you see Frankie Dettori doing the flying dismount from a 25-1 shot at Saratoga but unfortunately none of us were May Day Ready ($53.50) in the seventh. Clear The Air ($25.60) was another missed opportunity in the eighth but Turffan was on target when The Queen’s MG ($7.20) drove home in the feature. There was a blanket finish in the finale with the choice of MikeSal57 being The Nostalgic One ($11.00) who prevailed. Hopefully Tom Williams will update the leaderboard more promptly this time around 😜

Day 20
The fifth week begins and as has become customary due to overnight rain the opening steeplechase was canceled and all races taken off the turf. And with Tropical Storm Debby threatening to put a downer on the weekend I’m now at the stage of thinking it might as well rain until September. Unsurprisingly many of us decided to keep our powder dry given the number of scratches (including a Stewards scratch in the contest !) so Tiz Purple ($13.00) gave us the blues in the second and we failed to Own The Field ($7.60) in the third. Classic Legacy ($3.30) was uninherited in the fourth before Unsung Melody ($5.10) finally hit the right note for Italian Stallion in the fifth.
We told La Vita Sofia ($13.40) to bulgar off in the sixth while Neuschwanstein ($6.10) was a sleeping beauty in the 7th. Sterling Silver ($3.50) shone in the feature which brightened up an otherwise dull day for Goldandmyrrh , Real Quiet and Nan 53 . In the finale it was a Riverwalk ($4.90) in the park for the Mike Maker trainee helping Italian Stallion to a doppio on the day .

Day 21
Into the second half of the contest and it looked as if we were going to get a weather free day at Saratoga but that rainy day feeling came again to disrupt the latter part of the card and with nine of the ten winners paying less than $10.00, no fortunes were made. The Trail of Gold ($9.10) proved to be too elusive in the opener and no contenders were able to Legitimize ($9.50) their contest hopes in the second. JohnnyBatTBD and Shebainfront however got us back on track when Looms Boldly ($7.20) took the featured third. With bad weather in the forecast Ozzy and JolyB decided to head into the weekend on a winner by hopping on Eighty West ($3.90) in the fourth. Aspen Grove ($3.70) took the final turf race of the day in the fifth while TurfeyeJoe cashed again with the aptly named And One More Time ($5.20) in the sixth. That ended our success for the day with winners harder to find than goats on a tree and the news that Friday’s racing was canceled was the final straw for many punters in what has been a tough meet to enjoy so far .

Day 23
Although the rain had stopped by Friday afternoon it was still wet wet wet at Saratoga and the Four Star Dave Saturday ended up as a one star event with the major races postponed until Sunday. It’s written in the wind that Jacckk8 would be kaching today and Sandman ($6.10) accordingly obliged in the opener . Banned For Life ($8.70) was the hunch play of the day ( possibly the year ) in the second and Spiderjohn and Ten Furlongs duly piled on. On a day when our handicappers were as Cold As Hell ($12.60) we missed out on both the third and fourth races where in the latter Fast Kimmie ($11.20) prevailed despite breaking bad.
Pastor TimS70 knew he had a prayer with Spiritual Lady ($4.20) in the fifth but we were all sleepy joes to miss out on Tenacious Leader ($5.20) in the seventh. The Saratoga Special was another race where we failed to Showcase ($8.70) our talents but SpiderJohn’s inside knowledge proved more reliable than the Secret Service when Surveillance ($5.00) captured the ninth. So no change in the leaderboard but with the prospect of a full uninterrupted card on Sunday we can expect a lot of activity from our forum members who continue to prove that love is all around.

Day 24
Super Sunday at Saratoga with two extra stakes races showing that it was not just another Sunday - they built this city on top class racing. Sadly it bugs me that we didn’t have the winner of the opener as Palmetto Fury ($9.90) started a nice day for Tyler Gaffalione . After a volatile week on the stock market Nan 53 upgraded her portfolio with Proprietary Trade ($4.40) in the second. Meanwhile Doctor Disaster showed some enterprise when Starship Defiant ($11.20) was transported into the winners circle in the third. Save Us Melania ($4.00) came up trumps in the fourth in front of what may have been the biggest Sunday crowd in the history of Saratoga racecourse. Katie Davis produced a beautiful ride in the fifth but unfortunately it was not Within View ($29.40) of her many admirers in this forum.
In the sixth race La Cara ($11.20) showed that she was not just a pretty face with Goldandmyrrh , Ozzy and SpiderJohn especially admiring. Changing Aero ($15.00) was tireless in the seventh but none of us were pumped up by him although SpiderJohn did continue his good weekend run by his enthusiastic support of Fandom ($10.00) in the eighth. A huge opportunity was missed in the ninth when the longest shot of the day Ski Country ($53.50) took the piste out of us . Carl Spackler ($6.10) continued his Cinderella story with a five star performance in the feature ($6.10) but like Carson’s Run ($12.00) in the finale today he just was not a legend in our timeline.

Day 25
Week Six of the contest got off to a tepid start as despite some very attractive prices returned as a group we only had one winner on the nine race card. In the opening steeplechase we suffered a collective blackout as Jimmy P ($14.00) put on an Oscar movie winning performance. The Midtown Lights ($4.20) were not shining us in the second and a huuuge opportunity was missed in the third when Thirty Thou Kelvin ($53.50) lit up the tote board . Cost Containment ($9.40) was the name of the game in the fourth and we failed to cash again when Awesome Czech ($9.70) bounced home in the fifth.
It’s a long way to Tipperary and even further to Annascaul ($5.50) so it was no surprise that no one went there in the sixth. Pedalcar went four deep in the seventh which would have been a nice play if he had included Backed By Gold ($23.00) but he left the vault empty handed. We had to wait until the eighth race to finally get a winner as Destiny Star ($11.60) shone brightly for Real Quiet, NDSC 32 and TurfeyeJoe . We struck out again in the finale where the Final Verdict ($12.80) was guilty as charged. Meanwhile Bert Convy still remains a lonely boy at the top of the leaderboard. Roll on Thursday .

Day 26
Thursday started off brightly both weather wise and betting wise with TimS70 and SpiderJohn in cocktail mood after Manhattan Twist ($6.70) took the first. Former stakes winner Scuttlebuzz ($34.00) showed that he still had that elusive quality when winning the second at long odds with all three horses comprising the odds on entry being claimed . Pentathlon ($2.40) made the podium in the third but just with Ministerial ($7.70) in the fourth we were onlookers only. Very Stormy ($16.20) proved to be a great hunch play in the fifth but we didn’t see it in any of our forecasts.
The sixth race had an amazing amount of selections with most of us opting for Trading Secrets but it was only major contest contender Ozzy who found the way with She’s Got Will ($24.00) to move up to third place in the overall standings. SpiderJohn continued his great recent run when Courtly Banker ($7.90) opened his account in the seventh and is now tied for most wins (9) with Ozzy and TC. Meanwhile Jacckk88 had Olympic dreams in the eighth but with the rains turning the main track sloppy he was left up Cooke Creek ($3.80) without a paddle. In the off turf ninth most of our picks were scratched as Tomacon ($8.20) dug in to win. Lots of picks again in the finale but only Madame Blum was able to accompany Riley Jean ($10.00) to the window.

Day 27
It was a busy Friday at the Spa with a happy ending for two of our contestants although we missed out in the opener where Obrigada ($6.50) prevailed. Thankfully MVerrone got our group out of jail early as Out On Bail ($5.10) locked up the second . Shebainfront used her political history knowledge to good avail as Boss Tweed ($9.20) proved he could still dominate on the New York circuit by judicially taking the third. It’s not often that this crowd would pass on a Whiskey N Soda ($5.40) but we did in the fourth before Buckabeer came back firing to land Lady Firefoot ($24.00) in the fifth.
Dunedin Causeway ($11.20) was a bridge too far in the sixth but SpiderJohn kept his streak going when Pay The Juice ($3.10) squeezed out a win in the seventh. Buckabeer however was our top gun on the day and took our Breath Away ($12.80) when doubling up in the eighth. Tricky Temper ($6.90) and Mixologist ($10.20) surprisingly found no takers in the ninth and tenth but there was dancing on the the floor in the round after Bobby Jean ($9.00) caused a scene in the the finale to give Diablo and Otis who entered the day a combined 0fer 47 their first winner .

Day 28
Only three Saturdays left in the contest and the UIC troops were out in force with it looking like we would go through the card for most of the afternoon. Eye123 got proceedings off on the right track by mapping out Jonathan’s Way ($6.40) . Jacckk8 made his last picks today and went out with a bang with Concord Green ($28.40) kaching lots of green for him and Tex in the second . Nan53 and Indypacer were in a fashionable mode and Nic’s Style ($5.30) suited both of them in the third. Bucks beer is trying to be the Boss of All ($14.60) in this year’s contest and his chances have improved after taking the fourth. NDSC32 was on a Crusading ($21.40) mission today and moved up to fifth spot appropriately enough after the fifth. Bitowisdom is keen to stay in touch with the leading pack and Call Me Harry ($9.80) helped him do that on the sixth.
Reckoning Force ($8.20) was a very popular pick in the seventh as evidenced by Forego , Italian Stallion , Kinley2017 and MikeSal57 who happily managed to get his picks in on the right day this time around. Kinley2017 doubled up quickly in the eighth with Game Warden ($12.60) who also helped brighten up the day for CindyLouJazz , Cruzan and trophy hunting Bobtailnag. We made it nine winners in a row when Nan53 and Shebainfront landed on Grayosh ($17.60) but our hopes of a clean sweep were dashed when Power Squeeze ($14.90) brought the sweet candy home in the Alabama. Nan53 hit her third winner of the day in the eleventh to be greeted by Real Quiet shouting Yo Daddy ($4.90) in the winner’s circle. We missed out on Beautiful Thief ($6.50) stealing the finale where it was nice to see trainer George Weaver record his 1000th winner.

Day 29
A soggy Sunday at Saratoga left most of the UIC contestants on the sidelines waiting for the better weather of Travers week as predicted by the ABC meteriologist Tom Williams . In the opener Joly B made a passionate case for his selection Buriana but it was Goldandmyrrh who was Bahamas bound as Briland ($7.10) sailed home. MVerrone went to the west coast of Scotland for his selection in the second but it was worth the long trip as Miss Hebrides ($7.70) was braw. Local resident Doctor Disaster was distraught when he woke up to today’s rain but he was in a Bank Frenzy ($10.80) after cashing in the third. Tommy Two Socks ($6.80) was lost in the wash in the fourth and we were strolling down Nelson Avenue ($19.20) when the fifth race went by.
Our chilly streak continued with Spirit of Esther ($13.60) in the sixth but Doctor Disaster stayed hot after a purrfect trip by Kimchi Cat ($8.00) in the seventh. Barron’s Bounce ($14.00) came up trumps in the eighth but we all stayed away from that one for one reason or another. Lots of us were playing with matches in the ninth but got our fingers burned when Super Chief ($8.10) took the highest honor. A golden opportunity was missed when longshot Foxy Cara ( $25.40 ) flew the coop in the tenth ( what a feeling that would have been ) and Colloquy ($13.80 ) did not even enter the conversation in the finale.

Day 30
The penultimate week of the contest and the meet and yet again the card was disrupted by bad weather. Hopefully the rest of Travers week will be beautiful and we can get some decent priced winners as today we had nothing that paid double digits. With NYRA being over Protective ($2.10) of its turf course the opening race was decimated and we had the shortest priced winner so far . Thankfully not even TC picked that one 🤑. With Doctor Disaster and Italian Stallion apparently nothing is Sacrosant ($5.40) and they were happy to cash in after the second race. The Irish bred Cathkin Peak ($9.90) may have got the call from John in the third but none of us were on board. We also slipped up in missing Accidental Hero ($4.30) in the fourth but let’s raise a glass for Joly B who wisely called for More Vino ($5.00) in the fifth.
Defending champion Sounds of Saratoga needs to get his skates on if he wants to repeat and Playfull Lass ($8.10) gave him a nudge in the right direction in the sixth. On a day where relatively few picks were made the one horse that caught our collective eye was Runnin’ Ray ($5.50) in the seventh and Buckabeer, Shebainfront and Turbine were all sharp enough to select him. Big Prankster ($7.90) fell flat for us in the eighth but with the final play of the third quarter JohnnyBatTBD threw a touchdown to score with Sweet Fantasy ($7.60) .

Day 31
No weather problems today at Saratoga but we had 28 scratches and for the second day running not one winner paid double digits so no big movement on the contest leaderboard . Indeed there was no movement at all for the first four races as we collectively struck out . With six vet scratches the fifth race was reduced to three runners with Three Zero being the popular choice . However For Some Reason ($6.20) it was only Ziggy who came out of this race sprinkled in stardust . Annie Goodbody ($9.50) had no admirers in the sixth and we also missed out when the NYRA stewards handed Headline Numbers ($3.20) the race in the seventh .
Shebainfront was the only one dancing when Disco Ball ($5.50) moved sharply into the winners circle in the eighth. Madame Blum and Real Quiet declared that you Can’t Fool Me ($6.30) in the ninth while Turbine keeps generating winners as La Salvadorena ($7.00) chalked up the victory in the finale .

Day 32
Sun is shining in the sky There ain't a cloud in sight It's stopped raining everybody's running And don't you know It's a beautiful new day
Running down Union Avenue See how the sun shines brightly in the city On the streets where once was pity Mister blue sky is living here today
Mister blue sky please tell us why You had to hide away for so long (so long) Where did we go wrong?
We were all looking for a stunner in the first but we were left without words when Senza Parole ($9.40) won it. Just Music ($5.10) also hit the wrong note with us in the second before Cruzan finally got us off the mark with El Rezeen ($6.20) in the third. Nan 53 was on the right track again in the fourth when Big Blue Line ($8.90) steered home first. Future is Now ($6.30) passed us by in the fifth and Miss Maximus ($16.60) was a bigger miss in the sixth . TC tied up SpiderJohn in the most winners contest when Rare Art ($6.60) proved to be a masterpiece in the seventh and Forego had the biggest priced winner of the day when Raging Sea ($14.40) stormed past Idiomatic to take the feature. In the finale TC and Ozzy no doubt raised a glass of Rioja as Vina Arana ($6.60) chalked up another winner for the both of them .

Day 33
Wow, what a swell party that was. Beautiful weather , a Travers for the ages and some big upsets along the way . The only thing missing was winners from our group who despite hundreds of picks had a rather mediocre day. It had started brightly with JolyB and Salestopper covering the Geopolitics ($2.90) scene in the opener but with many of us looking for a green light special in the second we lost our Donegal Momentum ($13.20) and for the next 5 races not even our mortal locks could find the winners circle. Indeed after his win in the eighth race Turffan was one of the few who could leave the day with a Clear Conscience ($20.00). Far Bridge ($18.40) upset the Appleby cart in the ninth but that was a bridge too far for all of us. Real Quiet was high on Society ($9.40) in the ninth and did you evah see that coming. Salestopper doubled up on the day when Mullikin ($5.30) ran away with the Forego and blanket regular MVerrone may have missed out on the festivities this year but was the only one to display Fierceness ($9.80) in the feature. The day ended amicably for Buckabeer and Shebainfront as they came to a Treaty Obligation ($4.90) in the finale .

Day 34
A beautiful Sunday at the Spa for New York bred day and good to see some of the UIC contingent getting in the winners circle even though they might not have selected the winner. Shoes came out firing , using his maximum daily quota of 12 picks today and along with SpiderJohn was Accelerating ($2.80) up the leader board after the opener . I had selected the winner of the second race but was watching the EPL and missed the deadline which will no doubt be put on my Epitaph ( $26.00). Buckabeer and Shebainfront kept up their recent winning sequence going striking the gold with Silver Satin ($8.50) in the second with Shoes and Nan 53 also joining in the fun. SpiderJohn is looking to win the most winners prize and along with Doctor Disaster hit paydirt with Dakota Gold ($18.80) in the fourth. Pandagate ($3.40 ) got no love in the fifth but Shoes made it three on the day when Charlotte’s Heart ($8.00) kept beating in the sixth .
It was such a Busy Morning ($7.90) that we missed the winner of the seventh but Bitowisdom successfully Landed ($5.50) the eighth. Joly B racked up another winner with Mo Plex ($4.00) in the ninth but there were no believers for Moonage Daydream ($29.00) or North End Lady ($8.00) in the final two races of the day. So we enter the final week of the contest and not for the first time Bert Convy is leading the pack. However he struck out with all his picks today and it’s still wide open when one long shot can make all the difference as we have seen before .

Day 35
And so here we are in the home stretch with all to play for as Bert Convy continues to hold on to his long time lead but he dodged some bullets on Wednesday which saw 7 of the 9 winners paying double digits . In the opener most of us travelled down a hidden path and missed out on Evie’s Prince ($8.40) kissing a frog instead. Goldandmyrrh and Doctor Disaster however were Seeking Unity ($27.80) and stuck together in the second . Salestopper may or may not have been told in the past to Get A Job ($6.20) but that advice worked out in the third where Goldandmyrrh notched a quick fire double.
Secret Rules ($46.40) , Outtawaterbury ($21.20) , Shesinamood ($22.80) and Cousin Kristi ($16.90) all returned big payouts in races four through seven but none of that fell the way of UIC pockets. Meanwhile Propro’s faith in picking horse #7 for most of today’s races was Totally Justified ($14.60) when that filly resolutely beat the favored Virgin Colada in the feature . On a day when Saez mattered Luis piloted Just Heart ($32.80) to edge out Splashy in the finale as our luck dried out once again .

Day 36
Only four days left and the chasing peloton led by Ozzy and NDSC32 have still not caught up with yellow jersey wearer Bert Convy. In the opener the winner was Jus Too Fly ($4.60) for us and Goldcrest ($4.60) was a carrot left uneaten in the second. Given recent events it was unsurprising that nobody opted for a Cruise To Catalina ($8.90) in the third but thankfully MVerrone had Call Protection ($5.80) in the fourth. Meanwhile Shoes may have been drinking some Malibu Moonshine ($14.00) to celebrate his win in the fifth.
With another 4 winners today it has been the summer of Chad but in the sixth race it was Chad Summers in the winners circle as Filoso ($16.80) lived up to his name to the joy of sharp handicappers Eye 123 , Madame Blum , NDSC32 and duck breaker Hooper. Right to Vote ($11.00) was a topical winner of the seventh but we all abstained and also missed out on the chance of flying up the leaderboard when Charging Aero ($26.80) jetted home in the eighth. Shoes was the big winner of the day (albeit he did use 12 picks 😜) and doubled up with Two’s A Crowd ($17.60) in the ninth. Hooper and Salestopper both have plenty picks left and are trying to make their traditional final week flourish count with Zulu Kingdom ($6.20) contributing in the tenth. Lots of longshot picks in the finale but only the one selected by Camourous proved to be Creditworthy ($3.60).

Day 37
A distressing Friday for those at the track and watching on tv as a horrific two horse spill in the feature saw the first equine fatality of the meet . Condolences are due to the connections of the game New York bred Big Torpedo . Miraculously jockeys Javier Castellano and Eric Cancel did not suffer any serious injuries and Take Me To Church who went through the rail emerged relatively unscathed. In the opener we all went for long shots but the favorite went Gate To Wire ($5.90) . Camourous was no mad when Scythian ($8.20) won the second and Bitowisdom must have been hoping for a better return when Backstretch Rose ($3.50) took the fifth.
Ten Furlongs with just two picks left made a bold bid for glory when Smooth Breeze ($26.60) sailed home in the eighth and Turbine stepped on the gas when Valtellina ($23.20) was victorious in the ninth. Just about everyone had Warrior Richard in the tenth but sadly we all went down the wrong Emirates Road ($5.70) . In the eleventh Hurricane Debbie ($6.90) blew everyone away apart from Camourous who doubled up on the day . There was considerable excitement in the finale where a win by Charles J would have put Ten Furlongs in the lead with his very last pick. That victory looked on the cards when Flavien Prat came up the inside with a ton of horse under him only to run into the backside of Kid Kreesa ($13.20) who did not give way and gave Ten Furlongs another tough beat in his quest for his first title.

Day 38
After 24 days at the top of the leaderboard Bert Convy has been overtaken . Local Saratogian Doc D was the man to do it as long shot Kreesa ($48.20) followed his kid brother into the winners circle in the third race . Camourous may have thought he was Conniving ($9.90) by posting his selections in the wrong thread but at least they were on time and he was credited with the win in the fourth and also the eighth with Dapper Moon ($10.80).
Forego hasn’t given up the ghost and with many picks still left McCullough ($12.20) put him on a northward journey in the ninth. There was some Bright Work ($7.10) done by our handicappers in the tenth , namely Hooper , Italian Stallion and possibly Ozzy 😜. TurfeyeJoe got himself fully Immersive ($27.40) in the PPs and that helped him find a longshot Godolphin winner in the eleventh. Amazingly despite us all trying to find longshots today we missed out on Chad Brown’s Idea Generation ( $64.50) which would certainly have been a game changer in the Flower Bowl. Still In the finale Eye 123 and Forego managed to get themselves out of another fine mess when Over and Ollie ($16.40) proved to be a hardy performer to win the laurels.

Day 39
Last Sunday of the meet and as we enter the final furlong we have another exciting finish in prospect with Doc D (one pick left ) holding a $2.90 advantage over Bert Convy (three picks left ) with Ozzy , NDSC 32 , SpiderJohn and Bitowisdom still with a chance and who knows if someone like Forego or Hooper with lots of picks left might emerge out of the pack to steal the title. Indypacer got the ball rolling in the second race showing Opulent Restraint ($5.10) while Hooper and Ziggy hit the longshot of the day Spirit’s Mischief ($38.20) in the third to give them a ghost of a chance of lifting the coveted trophy. TurfeyeJoe is ending the contest in fine style and was the delighted recipient of UncleCharliesGift ($21.20) in the fourth. Bert Convy remains a Critical Threat ($9.60) after taking the fifth along with Italian Stallion who is not such a critical threat (make me eat my words tomorrow 😉) .
Propro will need five home runs on Monday to win but at least he will always have Paros ($7.30) who was victorious in the eighth. Buccaneer and Shebainfront did their homework in the ninth where St Benedict’s Prep ($6.00) schooled the opposition. Salestopper will need a miracle on Monday to regain the title but she will go into the final day with a winner as Running Bee ($5.80) took home the honey in the eleventh. In the finale it looked as if Bert Convy would retake the lead when Wild Nugget blazed out of the gate and sprinted clear into the home stretch but unfortunately he threw down the anchor and was overhauled by Irie Man ($8.30) to give Bitowisdom a winner for the day.

I could be wrong here, but bitowisdom made only one play today and it was a winner. (it was not added to his total wins...should be 11 not 10 ? ) ?

Don't mean to highjack your thread Bev, but I just wanted to observe that Frank M showed a lot of class in the way that he first recognized Mr. Lukas's 89th birthday during the post parade for race 1, and then further cheered in the way that Daily Grind got D Wayne a birthday win in race 1. Frank has grown by leaps and bounds as an announcer since the days when he did voice impressions of other race callers when he had the gig at Hialeah (although some of them were very funny).

Day 40
Drama in the opener as Bert Convy sought to take back the lead with odds on shot Military Road but it could be a long Daily Grind ($16.20) for him as Hooper and Johnny B take the D Wayne winner . Indypacer scored with Marvellous Madison ( $4.10) in the second and TurfeyeJoe kept his slim hopes alive with Try it Again ($28.00) in the third. . Forego had Heard on the Street ($5.00) to keep the streak going in the fourth and Shebainfront ended a brilliant first campaign with her Prerequisite ($4.40) winner in the fifth . The competition though got hotter in the sixth as Hooper broke the $100 barrier with Mobetterthangood ($21.10) who also kept Propro in the hunt.
Standings after race 6 DocD 9/39 $140.00 Bert Convy 4/38 $137.10 Ozzy 10/38 $116.20 NDSC32 6/39 $116.00 Hooper 6/35 $105.60
