I was a fan. C Z Rocket started out in 2017 with Al Stall and ownership was Frank Fletcher. He was still a colt then.. He wasnt yet gelded at end of April in 2020 with Stall or Fletcher Racing. Calvin Borel used to ride him a lot when he was at Oaklawn.
He was claimed by Miller on April 30th, 2020, at Oaklawn, and the new owner was Tom Keagle, for $40K. I suspect that is around the time he was gelded, when he changed ownership, because on May 25th, 2020, Miller and Keagle put him into a claiming race for $50K at CD and he had been gelded......and won that race.
We just watched him at Oaklawn last week Feb 2024......seems to have lost his kick and certainly 10 years old is a good time to retire any horse, since there aren't many racing past 10 years old (if they aren't standardbreds) and I think that may be due to an actual cutoff.
Research tells us that a TB's prime racing age (peak) is somewhere around 4.5-5 years old.
There were several different incarnanations of racing partnerships that owned the horse after that, some of the partners dropped in and out. Some stayed. At any rate, everyone did a good job keeping CZ together. He reminds me of Whitmore, who he also raced against. Everyone once in a while a few sturdy ones come to the racetrack and it's always wonderful to be able to be a "fan" of a horse for many years, when so many are retired to the shed at 3.
He was a big fan favorite and will be missed on the track.
HOpe they find a job for him at the track, I have a feeling he might be bored out in a pasture, maybe not though.
Pedigree here: love those city zips
