Qatar is next up on the international scene, a week before the Saudi Cup races. Saturday feature is the HH The Amir Trophy at a mile-and-a-half, for a cool $2.5M USD. GI winners Rebel's Romance, Simca Mille, and Russian Emperor (last year's winner) are among the favorites, with Point Lonsdale representing Coolmore/Aidan O'Brien, and Israr from Shadwell/John & Thady Gosden. The latter two ran second and third in the Bahrain International Trophy (GII) in November and stayed there to prepare for this event.
Locally based Wathnan Racing (Emir of Qatar) recently acquired both Simca Mille and former UK handicapper Haunted Dream, and they ran one-two in the local prep for this on 21 January.
Sneaking in under the radar (maybe) is Zeffiro (by Deep Impact) from Japan, when last seen a close second to Junko, and two lengths ahead of subsequent Pegasus Turf (GI) winner Warm Heart, in the GI Hong Kong Vase in December. The lightly-raced 5yo could still be improving with only seven starts, and gets leading HK jockey Joao Moreira in the irons. Drew widest in PP11 so work to do from there.
