TP R3 (6:55pm ET)- MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT 10F (AW) 3up $70,000
#2- Utah Beach (7-5) is the m/l favorite but trainer Correas, Jr. had a poor TP season last year, and this horse has found one horse better in each of his three turf starts. Playing against at the low odds. #7- Fayette Spirit (10-1) is a Calumet homebred that ran for Chad in his first four starts, was sold to current connections thereafter and has run four times in Kentucky for Robbie Medina, Shug's former assistant. Joey Ramos takes the mount which is a plus, hopefully he takes him to the front or thereabouts in a race without much obvious pace. That has resulted in two seconds and a third previously. Needs to improve on the new surface and stretchout, price will compensate. #10- Whitewalker (10-1) is a lightly-raced 3yo gelded son of Tapit which ran respectably at Woodbine for Kevin Attard as a 2yo, then was sent to Jonathan Thomas in Kentucky and has been training here at TP since September. First start on grass at CD was a tiring ninth behind Utah Beach, but the works over the TP course have been excellent, and Thomas is solid in second starts. Penn National journeyman Tyler Conner is giving Kentucky a go this winter, and he appears to be riding first call for Thomas, Saffie Joseph, Jr., and possibly Ian Wilkes, expecting him to be successful despite the large, diverse jockey colony at Turfway.
WIN- 10 EX- 7,10/2,3,7,9,10
TP R5 (7:55pm ET)- MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT 8F (AW) 2yo f $70,000
Some heavy-hitters involved in this MSW: Tracy Farmer, Lael Stables, Oxo Equine, Qatar Racing, G. Watts Humphrey, Jr., Godolphin, Claiborne Farm, and Augustin Stable. Oh, and Mattress Mac also. #3- Sedately (5-1) should improve in second start for Ward, but loses main-man Corrales to #5- Playback (5-1) which improved when stretched to a mile in the slop at CD. Playback is the first foal out of Blue Prize, which won the Spinster S. (GI) twice and the 2019 BC Distaff. Brendan Walsh will be in no hurry with FTS #6- On The Nile (15-1). I want to like Rusty Arnold's #7- Foreseen (9-2) but he just doesn't win much on AW, surprised this one isn't down in Florida. Brad Cox/Godolphin have #8- Sweet Sunshine (7-2) which dueled and tired on debut at KEE. Blinkers come off and exciting apprentice Axel Concepcion gets a 5lb allowance on this daughter of Hard Spun (Danzig-line AW overachievers). Training here with a purpose since first start. #9- Butterfly Queen (4-1) improved going a mile on turf for Maker, but looking elsewhere for the winner. #10- Viable (8-1) should improve on the stretchout/second start, has possibilities. #12- Everland (6-1) is Thomas/Conner for Augustin, ran a close third when switched to AW at Woodbine, blinkers-on today and could get overlooked from outside draw. Pretty wide open, great race to watch for future opportunities (key race?)
EX- 8,12/5,8,9,10,12
TP R8 (9:25pm ET)- ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING $25,000 N1X 6.5F (AW) 3up f&m $74,000
#5- Forgotten Peace (3-1) should be 3-5 here, so what's going on? This mare has been partly-owned, and always trained, by Tim Girten, who has run her at PID for all but two of her 29 career starts (AW record 28//10-9-5). The one other AW start was right here at TP last December, when she won an OCLM50b at 6.5F. Her last nine starts have been either 40K or 50K races, and most times she's been in for a tag. She's banked almost $300K in her career. She's an ATM machine, even if she's lost one step as a 7yo. WHY would you enter her in an OCLM25, for the tag?! The condition book shows 40k and 50k OCLM sprint races in December. If you are going to risk losing her today, how about DON'T, and just retire her to a nice farm somewhere. I hope they scratch, if they can.
EX- 5/2,10,12
TP R9 (9:55pm ET)- MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT 8F (AW) 2yo f $70,000
#7- Dappled Lady (8-1) is from a precocious family (100% 2yo winners) and is a half to GII turf winner Pixelate. Training well locally and would be hard to resist at m/l price. #10- Sierra Sky (9-5) closed furiously to just miss on turf debut, then ran against BC Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Hard to Justify in GII Miss Grillo at Baqueduct last time. Daughter of Uncle Mo should probably bury these and never look back, but she'll have to do it from way off the pace.
