Holiday season coming up. Most of my donations go to two local charities, the Multiple Sclerosis Center and the Food Bank. Anyone have a national charity that is not top heavy with marketing and staff that I could support?

Hard to say —not knowing your area. I donate to my local hospice organization. I served on the board for a while, and know it to be lean and very good with families. Also local community-based public pre-school organization that has pre-school, after school and parenting programs in a challenged part of the community(currently on that board). Also local small animal welfare organizations(spay neuter shelter and placement). Hunger/nourishment if you know the workings of the organization…
I don’t do anything national or where I don’t know how the organization functions. I keep it local where I know and trust the people involved and where I can see results.
Pressure is out there for funding this time of year. I don’t treat the season differently than the rest of the year.

Sorry for your loss hoop. That is one charity that I give to. Others that I am currently or have given to include, the Smile Train, The Salvation Army, Alzheimer's association, the art program at a local school, Disabled American veterans, and quite a few more. It can be hard because some are far more efficient than others at turning around donations to those they are intended to help, versus a heavy carve out for administrative fees.

We make donations every month and have been for a couple decades - mostly to food backs in the area. It's wise to research them and you might be surprised if find one bight be a fraud.
We used to donate our stuff that sale value of all kinds of stuff to Goodwill until we saw this:

An American multi-national corporation, which accepts millions of dollars in government funds, pays its top executives more than half a million dollars per year in total compensation, while simultaneously paying some of its employees less than the federal minimum wage.
Some employees earn just 22 cents per hour.
And the entire racket is perfectly legal thanks to a Depression-era loophole in federal labor law. Is now a good time to mention that this corporation also doesn't pay any taxes?
"Goodwill Industries is one of the most well-known charitable organizations in the United States, but most members of the general public are unaware that Goodwill exploits people with disabilities," said Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, which has organized a nationwide protest of offending Goodwill organizations. "We are conducting informational protests to make the public aware of this practice that, although sadly still legal, is unfair, discriminatory, and immoral." We thought they sold the items and then gave the money to the poor.

I also do trust the Salvation Army and that is my local charity. Besides the municipal dog shelter and our other local rescues.
I have a few standing ones I like and switch on and off every year:
Doctors Without Borders - probably don't need to explain what they do to help human beings...Totally politically independent...I saw what they were doing in Haiti, etc
National Park Service - To preserve our wonderful parks system...they won't be making more, and any lands set aside and cared for (includes state and county parks) to maintain and care for open space where people of all ages can enjoy nature is important to the fabric of our physical and mental health...
Public Library System and literacy -one of the best resources in every community, whether you need a book, dvd, a spay/neuter voucher, so many community efforts all in one place.

I've found that Charity Navigator is a useful resource in learning where my donations may have the greatest impact. Here's a link:
This time of year it seems as if food insecurity reaches a peak, sometimes in communities that on the surface appear to be prosperous. Donations of cash or items to local food banks can make a huge difference in lives.
