Cox Plate is Australia’s greatest weight-for-age race, run each year at Melbourne’s Moonee Valley racecourse.
The Cox Plate record is 2:02.94 set by WINX in 2016 on the same track. But WINX actually won it 4 times, in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018! Probably never be another one like her.
There are 2 mares in the race this year, Fangirl and Duais. If you remember, in 2021, Verry Elleegant who was crowned Australian racehorse of the year, won this, and she also won the 2021 Melbourne Cup and the 2020 Caufield Cup.
Will be interesting to see if a mare can do it again in 2023.
Romantic Warrior is coming over from Hong Kong, and is the favorite. However, he is one of six horses who has never raced at the Moonee Valley track before. Then we have Victoria Road, who is the only horse in the race who has never raced on Australian soil at all.
Also of note, there are only three 3 year olds in this race. Militarize, King Colorado, and Victoria Road. For myself I have to wonder if they can beat older horses in this weight for age race, despite they are getting weight breaks.....Victoria Road getting less of a weight break than the other 2 though. I would not pick these to win.

Enjoy the trip, Bev… BC activities won’t be as interesting without you!
