US Open Tennis tournament began Monday. The tourny always kicks off with two headliner matches in the stadium evening session.
Last night, following a women's singles match, the USTA put on a nice ceremony honoring Billie Jean King and her successful efforts to bring equity pay for women professional players 50 years ago today.
So, back in 1972 after King won her championship match, during her on-court interview... she didn't follow with the "usual" blah blah blah remarks about her hoping to win again the next year.
Instead, she threatened to NOT play AT ALL the next year -- and added that no other women would, either. The tornament prize money was significantly less than what the men players were earning. She put the ball in motion from there.
Long story short, Bristol Myers Squibb was the first and only company, early on, to agree with her cause and pony-up the additional monies/(funding) to pay women players the same as men. Over time, I guess this surely impacted and helped womens earnings in all sports. King did a lot for Title 9. She was a true pioneer for her day.
