I actually thought Edgar Prado was already retired, but I guess it is now official: www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/269548/hall-of-fame-jockey-prado-announces-retirementHe's my favorite jockey of all time - humble, classy, and a magician in the saddle (Sarava, Birdstone, Shared Account to name just a few of many). He always seemed to be in tune with his mounts and got the most out of his longshots. Of course he will forever be linked to the legendary Barbaro.

this is very bittersweet it took him a LONGGGG time to come back from the barbaro tragedy years until he became a great turf rider but he couldn't get the mounts i hope he lives a long and happy life outside of racing

I was in a racing partnership from 1993 to 2003 that was based out of Laurel, Md.
Our trainer, the late Charles Hadry, would use Edgar Prado whenever possible. He was a great person and of course a hall of fame jockey. He was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. There was never a time that he wouldn’t greet us in the paddock with a big smile. He was gracious enough after a race and before going back to the jocks room for the next race, to take a picture with my daughter. She cherishes the memory even today.
I would always tell Edgar, as our trainer gave him a leg up on our horse in the paddock, good luck and have a safe trip. His response, with a smile , was always, thank you.
I’m glad he is retiring in good health and to spend more time with his family.

A lot of very good jockey's started in MD. While here his main competition was Mike Luzzi. They both went to NY with Mike doing better at first. Edgar actually came back to Md for a few seasons. Mike got a new agent based in NY when they first left. Edgar took his to NY. I think that hurt him a bit.
I remember Edgar winning a couple of the NINE on a WEDNESDAY card too. I used to GO to Pimlico on weekdays until the 5th. Today I can't find a track running that I'm willing to play. SAD
Oh Chris NcCarron comes to mind too!
Sorry for the absence. I just couldn't get into the 3yo's so not much to say along those lines. Plus my last posted pick really let me down and I caught "beatbyanose" virus as well the "comebacktowin" one.
Going to miss you Edgar!

Oh Md also had more female jockeys back then. Mary Wiley rode my biggest winner. Richard Small used them a lot!

Yes ziggy I remember Dickie Small.
Ramon Dominguez was a very good rider and then went to NY and that one bad spill ended his career.
Maryland was known for producing very good apprentice jockeys.
Times have changed and we don’t even know the fate of racing in the state. They will continue to race at Laurel until the end of the year, after that who knows.

Appreciate the memories posted of Edgar. The kind comments from owners and trainers reminds me of what I used to hear about Alex Solis, another jockey that sort of quietly rode into the sunset.
