Wow— it is that bad?? I hear complaints where I am, but haven’t felt any difference. Could Belmont be cancelled? Moved to Ellis Park lol?? Maybe move the BC and everything to Ellis or Belterra(since they have a turf course)!

Yes, it is that bad. Friend in upstate NY said ashes coming down and a leaving a thin coating of debris on his car this morning.
Only time I ever experienced this was living on border of national/state forest when the forestry dept was doing controlled/prescribed burns. Soot and ashes coming down all around my property in the woods, very scary. Some of the "flakes" were very large.

It's awful. I had plans to take my dad to Delaware today but it's not healthy to be outside. Last night at 7PM you could stare at the orange sun without even hurting your eyes.

Here in Albany, NY (upstate NY, 150 miles north of NYC) the worst of the smoke was Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, with the heaviest plume pushing through to the south and west of the region. We've had plenty of 'smoky' skies here over the years, due to fires that were occurring in the western parts of the US and Canada, resulting in an orange haze around the sun and 'nice' sunsets, with the particles suspended higher in the atmosphere. This has been something else. The source fires in central Quebec are much closer, and the weather pattern isn't dispersing the smoke either horizontally, or vertically. The smoke is down to ground level, you smell it as soon as you step outside. Visibilities are noticeably reduced, and heating from the sun, which is normally at about its highest angle around now (summer solstice), is also noticeably less. When I was just outside briefly this morning (Thursday) visibility had improved, but the smell remained and the sky was hazy, but not the orange pall of previous days. The best description I've read came from Mike Hardiman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY. He said it “looks like Mars” and “smells like cigars.” Photo from the parking lot at the NWS Binghamton below. This is at 9:45AM on Wednesday morning. The automatic lights have come on in the parking lot. I'm sure that others in the region, like JolyB and PonyGirlJCM over in CT, have had a similar experience. The stagnant weather pattern responsible for funneling the smoke plume into the Northeastern US will be hanging around for another 36 hours before being shunted eastward, but conditions in New England and New York City should be improving going forward. Having said that, the fires continue to burn so the source material remains. Folks in Western NY, Pennsylvania, and adjacent areas may see the worst conditions today. Stay healthy! TW
