paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/report-churchill-meet-will-be-moved-to-ellis-park-beginning-june-10/Statement from Rick Hiles President of Kentucky HBPA - “Horsemen question the purpose of this unprecedented step, especially without conclusive evidence that there is a problem with the racetrack at Churchill Downs. We all want to find solutions that will improve safety for horses. However, we need to discuss allowing trainers and veterinarians to use therapeutic medications that greatly lessen the risk of breakdowns. Drastic steps, such as relocating an active race meet, should only be considered when it is certain to make a difference.” Anyone have any idea which medications he is referring to? Analgesics and anti inflammatory medications might keep sore horses racing but they don’t prevent breakdowns. I can’t think what else he means. I’m pretty sure the answer isn’t more drugs.

Didn’t the bute restrictions change? CD could surely use a good dose of rain = moisture on the surface also imo. So cheap unsound horses will be forced to relocate and break down elsewhere, I assume? Arlington is not around——Ellis? Thistle? Belterra turf should get a boost…..
I will take the time off until Saratoga and play golf + landscape. Not all bad
We were planning to run Bo Cruz next Sunday…..now race goes at Ellis and not sure they can run 1 1/16 there? I don’t want to go there anyway

but if it's about safety, shouldn't it be cancelled NOW? got cd stock?-GET OUT! Could not agree more…. If the surface is a concern at all, stop racing now! Doing otherwise is simply lip service and bowing to pressure. Heaven help them if there are any issues tomorrow or Sunday…

That part of his statement also had me scratching my head. I think it's a good idea until a full evaluation and analysis of the track at CDI takes place to move racing to Ellis though.......despite they saying it's not the track surface? Color me confused. Where will the horses be stabled? Are they going to travel back and forth for races at Ellis? I am wondering how we might utilize the wonders of AI in all this, to remove some of the (poor) human decisions which seem to not be the best counsel so far. There's no way to ever make racing totally safe, and there are a ton of things to look at: Meds, breeding for speed instead of soundness, illegal doping, better screening of horses, , are all in the mix of the "safety" conversation.......... but none of that can be accomplished overnight, and even those who are strongly in favor of the utmost safety for horses and jockeys do realize this. Improvement and Patience is needed of course but wondering if AI could be helpful since it's a lot of things to analyze that robots do better. By the way, can anyone tell me what their opinion of Tapeta surface is? I am curious about it. Seems like either haters or lovers, can't get a bead on real pros and cons.

i'd like to see data iso opening weekend every year. speculation, but it feels as if they manipulate the surface in an effort to get big g1 figs and new records. there's nothing wrong w the surface the remainder of the meets. lunacy to now pack their bags and go to ellis.

Brad Cox says the "surface" is fine. No uproar from the trainers.....Could this have anything to do with the renovations taking place at CD ? Racing becoming one "big" soap opera where on a weekly basis we're fed news that just makes us shake our head. (cannot remember all the negative stuff in today's racing happening decades ago )
No big deal, CD is easy to overlook. (wagering dollar)

CD easy to overlook? NY and KY are the only circuits that matter……..
Trainers say the track is fine——#s are higher throughout the first week because better horses run in the first week. No rain definitely factors in this since horses have better footing when there is moisture in the surface, and they can only water so much……
I still feel that the crazy high purses for cheaper claimers fuels the claiming merry go round and quick comebacks for problem runners to accentuate horses’ problems getting worse.
Too easy to blame it on the surface——cheap runners going off the drugs on which they have run forever and become dependent have anything to do with it?
Going to Ellis won’t solve anything—-the cheaper runners will go to smaller tracks where their problems will get worse and the alarmed public will never hear or know about it.

it feels as if they manipulate the surface in an effort to get big g1 figs and new records. I wish all the tracks would stop doing this. Young horses w/still developing musculoskeletal systems don't need to be running on "cement-like" highways for the sake of the breeding shed/track records. While there does seem to be a lot of bad press as of late, IMHO it's not any ONE thing. But when you have a combination of things that need to be tweaked for a better outcome, they can pile up. Cumulative effects can compound into bigger problems.
