From Bloodhorse. www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/232343/how-good-are-sale-2-year-olds-as-racehorsesResearch compiled by BloodHorse MarketWatch shows 78% of the 2-year-old horses sold at auctions from 2000-17 went on to start in a race and 76% of those runners became winners. By comparison, of all the named 2-year-olds representing the same crops as the sale horses, and including the sale horses, 69% became runners collectively and 67% of those runners became winners.

2021 article. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7916178/Based on scientific evidence, the research cited in this review supports the training and racing of two-year-old horses and advises caution in the use of medications such as corticosteroids.

But, he says, there is a caveat: horses are individuals. You can't expect all horses to respond to training exactly the same way at two years old or three years old. Forcing a horse who is not ready to make a start at two is not good either. That's why a trainer needs to be incredibly observant.
Most trainers are not .

I've got no actual problem with racing 2 year olds APPROPRIATELY. Provided they are not put thru excruitiating programs (need I name the program(s)?) that ignore their biological realities / mileposts as regard horse/TB development... ...AND most importantly, that they remain drug-free. Even if one were a human running coach, certain cautions are suggested and followed, just as they would be for getting couch potatoes into their first 5K race....there is a common but gentle program that a respected and reliable coach would design.
