Died on this day in 1989. Was lucky to see Big Red race in person. My dad and brother were blessed to actually spend time with him one day at Claiborne in the early ‘80s,photo of dad leading him on the end of a shank is burned into my memory. Lifetime PP’s www.secretariat.com/past-performances/Last race video.

Thanks for posting this Hoop. Brings back lots of memories.
The track announcer at Woodbine then was Darryl Wells who had a particularly recognizable voice. He was there before Dan Loiselle and as I remember it he lost the job because of some dispute over a shared ticket.
Kennedy Road, the horse that led for the most of the race, was a top Canadian bred but my recollection was that he was more of a sprinter. He won some nice races in California a well. He went on to be a top Canadian sire for years.
Eddie Maple rose Secretariat that day because Ronnie Turcotte had days from Aqueduct. Good thing to know for trivia contests.
Woodbine has changed just a little since 1973 although they are reinstalling the inner turf course for 2019. That will give them another turf course to go along with the 1 1/2 mile EP Taylor course. they took out the inner standardbred track because they moved them permanently to Mohawk.
That race was the 1973 Canadian International and it was very cold. You can see the steam coming from the horses as they run. This years race goes next weekend October 13 and Small Mac and I are heading there for the weekend. I trust it wont be that cold! We are doing the Woodbine/Mohawk 5 cards in 3 days weekend. On Monday I have business in London, Ontario and am hoping to catch the jugheads at Western Fair that night. Sucker for punishment!
At the end of the video it says "Coming up next Olga Korbut & Evel Knevel". I wonder what the hell they were going to do?

I recently heard that in his hard workouts, Secretariat would run 6 furlongs in the 1:08's.Can any one tell me if this is true?

Steve Haskin in The BloodHorse, years ago. Hooper
Laurin had to rush him to make the Marlboro Cup, and only after he worked five furlongs in :57 flat, “galloping out” six panels in 1:08 4/5, three days before the race was he declared fit and sharp enough. In today’s jargon, Secretariat was ripe for a major bounce.

You know, I think that is the exact same article I read that from. He galloped out six panels in 1:08 4/5's. Thank you.
