Added another track to my personally visited list today. The Tyre hippodrome in Lebanon is 2000 years old and used to see crowds of 40,000 although nowadays it still attracts more visitors than Aqueduct and the seating is better too especially if you fork out an additional 150,000 Lebanese pounds ($1.50) for the grandstand bleachers. Big race annually is the Julius Caesar Stakes which took place earlier this week and was won by Tu Brutus.

Just wondering Bev, when globetrotting, do you wear a kilt? Not trying to be an ass but just curios if it is common in Lebanon to wear one. How would you compare the horse racing there as opposed to here?

How would you compare the horse racing there as opposed to here? I have taken two kilts with me on this trip , one for the Dubai World Cup and one for the big horse sale that takes place in Dubai on the Tuesday night before the World Cup next Saturday. I tend to wear them mostly on special occasions . I am not wearing one while traipsing through the streets of Beirut but that’s more for comfort than anything else. The racing in Dubai on World Cup night and during the Carnival is comparable to what you would see in the States on big days like the Triple Crown and the Breeders Cup.

I used to watch a show called Carnival. What is that? A huge party? Do you or have you purchased any horses at that sale? This question goes out to spider, hoop, or anyone that purchases horses, especially higher priced animals. Do you buy horses based on what you see in the horse or do you have an advisor of sorts to help you?

Lebanon has some of the best archaeological sites in the world. A beautiful country racked by turmoil for many years now. We ignored the advice of the US State Department and with a local guide entered the heartland of Hezbollah today to see the magnificent Roman temples at Baalbek. We ate great traditional food with the locals at a highway truck stop , shopped for spices in the souk and were greeted with some wonderful smiles from children wondering who these crazy foreigners were. Such a shame that politicians from all sides have totally screwed this region up.

saffron and vanilla are two wonderful spices but very expensive.Out of my price range but when I was a food broker was lucky enough to sample them both at food shows...Pretty cool Bev to see those places. How does the job market look at places around there?
