Have been reading several Dick Francis novels and finding them very enjoyable. Although most of them are based around British racetracks my current read is set in Canada with Assiniboia Downs featured prominently. No mention of Large Mac so far but I still have a few chapters to go !

Louis L'Amour = western tales
Dick Francis = horse racing tales
Both spin a web that just gets better and better
(also very good read..Lee Childs Jack Reacher series...the movies don't do them justice...ex Major military police travels with only a toothbrush and the clothes on his back....)
Stuart Woods Stone Barrington character is also a great read (shows up in a number of his books...former NYPD turned attorney.....Knob Creek Bourbon drink of choice

Read most of Dick Francis back in the day, he is a master of the genre for sure. Lee Child had a great run with the Reacher series though I think he has run out of steam on them. Cruise's movies were well made and entertaining, but he wasn't Reacher as Child described the character. The mini-series was decent as well but while Reacher was a big man as described, that character looks more like a body builder. I like Hennicg Mankell's Kurt Wallander detective and Kenneth Branaugh's depiction of him in the BBC series.

Shoes , I have read all the Reacher novels and enjoyed the latest one too. Have started to read the Wallender books and it has been an education as far as Sweden is concerned. If you’re looking for another detective series then I would highly recommend the Ian Rankin, Rebus novels set in Scotland. I promise to help with translation if you get stuck. 😜

I'm so glad he kept going with them after it looked like he has stopped with "Exit Music". I started with Naming of the Dead, and then went back and read all of the earlier ones and everything since. If I had read the first one first (Knots and Crosses) don't know if I would have read the second. In my opinion, he really found his rhythm with Rebus in the second one. No problem with the translation, haha. I may have mentioned that through my wife's participation in a Genealogy website, I connected with a long- lost or never knew, a cousin I had who is a recently retired pharmacist in Lerwick, Shetland. I just talked with him last night (what's app is wonderful for that) He sounds exactly how I have imagined Rebus would sound. Another interesting series is Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels.

I remember reading "The Edge" when it came out in 1988 and being impressed by the detail that Dick Francis captured about Assiniboia Downs and Winnipeg in general.
I think I have all the Dick Francis books in paperback and still look forward to the new ones that his son Felix puts out every year.
I found my copy of "The Edge". I bought it for $22.95 at Eaton's in hardcover. It was 25% off which in those days was written on the price tag in red ink.
