Sitting right in line of a blizzard on Saturday, 2 feet possible. Just hoping for no power loss.
Headline in today's Boston Globe. "A possibly historic storm is headed toward New England; accumulation in some spots may be staggering".

Stay safe Hoop. Depending on which computer model performs best, you can expect between 18-26" with winds 30mph gusting to 50. Have a generator? Here in eastern NY we'll be right on the western fringe so might be a near-miss.

Anyone with a jump pack that has a cigarette lighter connection can use that to power lamps in your house. They typically have 17, 18 Amp hr batteries, and with an inverter (can go as little as 100 watt)..can purchase led bulbs (60 watt replacement bulbs that draw only 9 watts...the 100 watt replacement draw 14 watts)...which will allow you to have light throughout the night. (17amp hr battery X 12 volts = 204 watts ) 9 watt led will give you 12 hrs of light drawing down the battery 50% ....great for camping alternative.

Hoop and Ponygirl, hope that you both stay safe through this upcoming snowstorm. Most of all, I hope that everyone's power stays on. The weather forecasters seem to have discovered the term "bomb cyclone" and have been throwing it around with all too much glee. I guess that they enjoy being the center of attention at times like this.

This will be the first time in my memory that I do not have a concern about having to go out in this… I semi-retired a few weeks ago….. gave up my management position and am now floating as clerk wherever they have a need and doing the “manager duty thing on occasion if I am asked and want to. No trying to get to work to relieve the night crew…no worrying about if anyone can get in so I can go home….no worrying about the phone ringing because someone was not coming in and having to go back out to let someone go home because there is no one else to cover it….. 🙂 The only stress I have is if the power goes out…

Hoping the best for all of you I am not even on the map for the brunt of this, yet I have snow that will seriously freeze tonight, thaw tomorrow and re-freeze probably worse. Called in a salt truck to prep my driveways. Downhill--onehas a curve atthe bottom--other has curve at top street -- accomplished before the temp drop
Racing from home looks like the best option tomorrow Warming up to Gulfstream card lol

Hoop and PonyGirl, I'm sorry to hear that you have so much snow to deal with but glad that you are both otherwise OK and that your power stayed on. Connecticut is a relatively small state but I'm always amazed how different the weather patterns can be from one part of the State to another. The New London-Groton area had blizzard conditions and from 20 inches to 2 feet of snow. We are in the Farmington River Valley and after listening to dire predictions had to deal with perhaps 8 inches of snow. My daughter lives in the far Northwest corner and may have had 3 inches of snow at most. Location is everything.

Happy to hear that all are safe after the storm. I've been through a few blizzards in the 1st half of my life and there's stress about power loss, cracked pipes and such, but with all due respect, it's nothing compared to the stress of a major hurricane heading somewhat in your direction. In the 2nd half of my life, the thought of losing power for days/weeks in the Florida summer heat is worse, not to mention your home being compromised and damaged/destroyed, with the potential that there's no get-away from the destruction after that happened for awhile, in a worse worse case.

As the reports of the most recent storm were coming in, the local news used a weather term that I'd never heard before. They were predicting "Sound Effect" snow for the New Haven to New London, CT area. No, it doesn't have anything to do with noise as the snow falls. As most of you know, in places like Buffalo, New York, when cold air moves over the open waters of Lake Erie it absorbs moist air that is rising off of the relatively warmer waters of the Lake. That saturates the clouds and causes heavy snowfall as soon as the clouds pass over the colder land.
The same phenomenon occurs (although it is rarer) when colder air, driven by a wind from the South, passes over Long Island Sound and then drops snow on the coast of Southern Connecticut. It's not as dramatic as the snows of Buffalo since the Sound is not that wide. I've been living in CT for over 50 years and have never heard the term until yesterday. I thought is was just a snowstorm (around here very often called a Nor'easter).
