I used to make clothing but I have lost touch with all the terminology. However, the late King and Queen silks apparently date all the way back to the horse, Minoru, owned by King Edward VII, circa 1906 – circa 1917. That nehru-like Mandarin stand-up collar with the frog fastenings are very reminiscent of the chinese cheongsam style dresses you see in fashionable society in China..... (changshan for males, cehongsam for women). The changshan was often worn by men with a magua, also commonly translated as "riding jacket" in English language. Also resembles the tangzhuang, which is a variation of the Manchu "horse jacket" that was originally worn by Manchu horsemen. Except these racing silks are shorter in a shirt-format, with set-in sleeves. I am still thinking Manchu and Han dynasties, because those also fastened on the left side. But we also see this in military clothing from Napoleonic times. Would love to know more about what made them choose these decorative closures, I am thinking the chinese culture pre-dated the ones adopted by Europeans? We take so much for granted, but there is always an interesting history behind everything which I find fascinating. I'll put this down as "conversations I would have liked to have with The Queen over tea". I'm sure she would have been happy to discuss it, she was very affable and very much into horse racing. |

Both the Oaks and Coronation Cup look like head scratchers. I had not been fond of Emily Upjohn in the past so was surprised to see the 4/5 present odds.

Only five entered for the Coronation Cup, and I can't fathom why Hamish is currently the rank outsider at 25-1 when the two 'favorites' Emily Upjohn (4-5) and Luxembourg (7-2) prefer firmer ground and are both on reclamation missions after some disappointing runs. Feed The Flame (8-1) is crying out for a return to 12F after a good third in the Prix Ganay (GI) last time over v. soft ground, and Hamish (25-1) is just ludicrous at those odds, even though Haggas has kept him in GIII company for most of his races, perhaps realizing his limitations. He ran Kyprios to 3/4 length in GI Irish St. Leger at 14F two years ago, he likes ground with give to it, and has won five in a row against lesser company. It may well turn into a tactical race and a sprint finish, but Emily Upjohn has her work cut out for her to repeat in this event. Dozen left in for the Oaks, and not sold on the top two either. Ezeliya (4-1) from Dermot Weld should like everything about 12F on soft ground; Secret Satire (14-1) is on a nice progression with a GIII-win in the Musidora S. last out over my crush Francophone, sire Advertise is not fully exposed yet as a distance sire, soft ground could be a question mark as well; Ralph Beckett has four in here and his second-string, You Got To Me (14-1) beat Rubies Are Red last time, should love increasing distances being by Nathaniel, and is ridden by underrated Hector Crouch. Also wouldn't want it too soft. The three handicaps have 16, 14, and 12 runners so some good betting there. I like one in the 7F Surrey Stakes for 3yo, Balmacara (7-2). Has to find some lengths with favored Zoum Zoum, which beat him in a Novice race at Newmarket in November, but has won two in a row this year and gets three pounds from the favorite due to that one's Listed win last fall. Likes to make all the running, could turn the tables on the favorite. Would be surprised if Ezeliya didn't relish the distance TW. Female family of Estimate, gifted to The Queen by Aga Khan, who was Ascot Gold Cup G1 winner at 2.5 miles. Not the only family member to win Ascot Gold Cup either.

Not a fan of Pascal Bary, and the Haggas/Marquand runner might be a little cheap--though they both seem to handle soft. Putting LUXEMBOURG over them in exactas, hoping that the O'Brien class shows up.
Can't knock EZELIYA either if the footing is as advertised....
Maybe Aidan's YLANG YLANG if I am lucky earlier---no clue on the other races

I had BESHTANI (10-1 at post) in Race 2 and got beat by a longshot as they hit the wire together, so not feeling confident going forward. Will have to think it over for the Oaks, I like a few in there and just not sure about any of the Dubawi's at this distance.
For R3 Coronation Cup I'll do exacta Luxembourg, Feed the Flame over ALL and trifecta 1,3,5
For R4 Nifty Fifty - I only like I Still Have Faith and Liberty Lane

I never have been able to warm up to Emily Upjohn in any race I've ever seen that one in, and did not use in the Coronation Cup at all. Moore was only one who gave a good ride. The others must not have had their morning coffee yet. Made a little on the exacta.

Race 4 definitely Bolstered my bankroll, exacta $246.80
That was an odd race, with the winner going wire-to-wire, yet the place horse was just about dead-last as they turned in. Fair track I guess, if you can handle the uneven terrain and uphill finish. Koy Koy in Race 2 absolutely couldn't handle it, kept lugging in towards the stands rail, Buick had all he could do to keep her from crashing into other runners. Doubt you'll see him at this course again. Also, tremendous balance and athleticism by Haunted Dream, and James Doyle on his back, not going down after a terrible stumble at the start, nearly hit the board after all the drama.
Nice to see The King and Queen at the races to watch their filly in the Oaks.

Ezeliya was very well ridden by Chris Hayes, she traveled right into the race without being asked and just motored. Win $144.00Dance Sequence ran better than expected, but didn't handle the track either, had 'a foot in every county'  as the man said, all over the place inside the last two furlongs. Buick earned his money today.
Ylang Ylang ran okay for sixth, had a tough PP draw (12) and never had any position through the entire race. War Chimes (74-1) ran very well for third place at those odds, boosting the form of Sosie (Sea The Stars) which runs for Andre Fabre in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at 10.5F at Chantilly on Sunday.
