en.netkeiba.com/race/shutuba.html?race_id=202405021211Looking foward to the Japanese Derby. 2400 meters turf for 3 yr old colts and fillies, and open to international competition. 7th betting choice is same trainer/jockey combo as was Forever Young,. May the racing gods intervene if odds hold on him a nice karma play. with Justin Milano going off as the Favorite. Tomomichi won in 2016, 2018 and 2022. . Sugar Kun and Cosmo Kuranda look interesting, and maybe Gonbade Qabus a super longshot with the favorite justin milano and shin emperor. Im not done going thru everybody yet

I didnt know that so thanks. Forever Young's trainer knows class pedigrees.
Horses from this race rarely come here but show up in Dubai races, the 'Arc, Victoria Mile, Japan Cup, Arima Kinen, and the Japanese Triple Crown, so i do follow it.
I only started playing this race in 2007, when Vodka was running, a racemare I really liked. She was first mare to win this in 64 years at the time
She is who I credit as getting me interested in jra racing.
But when Do Deuce beat Equinox in this race, that was so exciting. Or when Contrail ran 2nd to Almond Eye in the Japan Cup.

Shin Emperor is full brother to 'Arc winner Sottsass. And Sugar Kun is one of Duramente's (RIP) last .... Titleholder was his most well known; quite precocious as a 2 year old, who just kept getting better as a 3 year old and 4 year old. In 2023 Titleholder got some lameness in one front , they rested him all spring and summer, after which he raced 1st, 5th, then 3rd, before retiring at 6. Duramente son Sugar Kun is about 16-1 right now and gets a good jockey.

TY! I would not have found this. ^^^ One thing I really love about learning about foreign racing, whether the horses come here or not, is that there is always something new and different to learn about. Like Forever Young's "face shield". What I found fascinating is how they also use reverse eye shields/goggles to protect horse's eyes. I wonder why we don't do that here, at least for works/training. Certainly, scratched retinas and eye ulcerations are something we would want to protect our horses from. Jockeys are allowed to wear goggles to protect their eyes, but not horses? Here is Sugar Kun wearing his: Yet here in US the some stewards seem to have a problem with it, and wondering why all the "hand wringing" since we do allow humans to protect their eyes? paulickreport.com/horse-care-category/back-to-the-future-or-not-futuristic-horse-goggles-prompt-mix-of-reactions-from-racing-officials.

Shin Emperor is full brother to 'Arc winner Sottsass. And.... Sugar Kun was bred by the same breeder as T O Password (Yanagawa Bokujo) and is 1/2 brother to Kitasan Black. I'm not seeing what I want in this race. But no foreign born horse has ever won this race, hence if Shin Emperor does win he makes history. I love the trainer and jockey but I'm chickening out on using him. I have gone over my wagers in the past and all the horses I bet and the kind of horse I always "go for" like Auguste Rodin, Sharyar, Loves Only You, Contrail, Kizuna........all by Deep Impact. And of course, Forever Young, whose grandsire is Deep Impact.I have done very well with all of them. I didn't actually choose that sireline on purpose. It just turns out that those end up being the ones I get smitten with. And extra points if they are dark browns, those really "get to me" and always look like dressage horses. I was absolutely smitten with Sharyar when he came for the Breeders Cup and he ran 3rd at 26-1. He had already won this Japanese Derby in 2021. And of course, Auguste Rodin won that race. Meanwhile, Sheryar here (just for the swoon) when he raced in Dubai: x.com/its1weneverknow/status/1773238555596214545

Well I just watched some of their races today, avoided looking at the hype, and the favorites didn't come in as the win candidates for me. What do I know though.
Horses I liked the most: Sixpence Gonbade Qabus Cosmo Kuranda - sire is caufield cup winner Sugar Kun - pedigree play, influences are obvious Sunrise Zipangu - looks very powerful to my eye
For Under plus some Longshots: Regaleira Justin Milano Shin Emperor June Take Mr. GT - the other Yahagi

Only thing i was right about was the "unders". Hahaha. I dont like precocious horses unless proven at a distance and justin milano only won at 1800m and 2000m. Not a shoe in by any means.
Despite all that I enjoyed the outcome. Immensely!
--56 year old jockey who had already won this 2x (2009, 2014) oldest rider to have ever won this race now, ×3. ---rail was left open! And he darted to it. (Leaving rail open seems to be atheme these days here, too) ---on a horse 76-1 who has not raced since January, and who had one of the lowest RPRs in the entire field, and had only won a non graded stakes and a G3
When that other horse scratched it did affect the pace, then that #18 went out and slowed it down. A very dawdling pace.
Shin Emperor did well to power home late. Sunrise EArth has a nice late kick too.
HUNCH: One i would truly keep an eye on is Cosmo Kurunda...that one is late maturing, had a win place on him.
That is some gorgeous turf there. I wanted to just lie down in it and read a book.
Which brings me to Why is it I can see ever blade of grass and hair on horses from 1/2 way across world, but many races I Watch here i dont get that kind of resolution?
