Yesterday I was chatting with Badactor and asked him if he knew the horse racing songs, "Bottle of Smoke" by the Pogues or "Chips Ahoy" by the Hold Steady. We then started talking about horse racing songs in general and mentioned several standards... What are your favorites?

Cant leave out old timey lullaby, Run for the Roses, Dan Fogelberg.
I chose the version with the Secretariat footage and Time magazine cover that someone put together

Sticking to theme of horse racing songs, this one is quite old and about Stewball or skewball... not many write songs about Irish bred 18th century race horses ( but more people should LOL) Here is his wiki page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skewball

per Marianne Faithful (both of her autobiographies are excellent reads), when she OD'd in Australia with Mick (he was there filming Ned Kelly), upon coming to, she said "wild horses couldn't drag me away" thus giving Mick the inspiration for the lyric. As many will know she years after the fact, got a songwriting credit for Sister Morphine. She also suggested that she encouraged Mick to read The Master and the Margherita (think that was the title) which gave him the idea for Sympathy for the Devil. In any event she has led a very interesting life and is a very well read woman.
