Day I
And they’re off and racing in the Saratoga Cup . PhlierFreak thought he was off to a flyer in the opener when Virtual Reality stormed clear in the stretch but unfortunately he threw out the anchor at the furlong pole leaving Bustin Bay ($5.40) in actual reality to make the winning move . Happily the second race turned out much sweeter for our group leaving Turffan , Doctor Disaster ,Arsignman and Nan 53 with a Sugar Hi ($6.30). Fabulous Fanny was Nick’s pick in the third but it was Diva Ready ($17.80) who turned out to be smoking hot for Partsnut who got off to his customary fast start. Perennial meet champion trainer Chad Brown got off the mark with Salimah ($3.70) who had a little too much for the others in the fourth while Dust Devil ($5.70) cleaned up in the fifth.
Running with scissors is never a wise thing to do and it proved to be the case again in the sixth as it was Yarrow ($8.80) who had the merry legs . Popular trainer and Saratoga weather forecaster Mark Hennig sent out the winner in the seventh transporting our very own ‘shoes Into Happiness ($16.00) . Meanwhile My Sea Cottage ($5.60) was the second Irish bred winner of the day when he unleashed the power in the eighth. Many eyebrows were raised when Gary Contessa entered a first time starter in the featured Schuylerville but it was Onion and Maumeeriverangler who had the last laugh as Becky’s Joker ($44.40) got their contest hopes off to a spectacular start. Finally another debutant , Thundera ($18.00) made a lightning finish to take the power and glory in the finale .

Day II
Heavy overnight rain unsurprisingly resulted in all races being off the turf on Saratoga’s First Friday with scratches galore and one race whittled down to just three runners.
Unfortunately none of our groups was sharp enough to be tuned in to Concerti ($7.60) who hit the right note in the opener where two of our selections were scratched by the stewards ! Mysaladdays opened her account with a Dreamlike ($2.70) win in the second while Lifelovenlaughter ($5.40) earned a hero’s medal from Mverrone in the third but Randomized ($5.40) evaded selection in the fourth.Diablo was jumping up and down like a muppet when 25-1 shot Henson led Russi with just a few strides to go but sadly Empire Sky ($6.40) flew past them both in the shadow of the wire to take the fifth.
Only Duke alumni were happy as Blue Devil ($5.40) won the decimated sixth race since all our selections were scratched . In the seventh Bustin Shout ($20.00) rang the bell for Jacckk8 and Arsignman but nobody thought about longshot Thinkaboutit ($42.20) in the eighth . Unified Alliance ($7.50) found no partners in the ninth while there were also no takers for MTO entry Magnolia Midnight ($5.70) in the nightcap .

Day III
The sun was shining on the Spa on Saturday but for the most part it was a dull day in the contest with no one hitting either of the two big bombers on the day . The much heralded Pirate ($2.70) may turn out to be a national treasure but failed to shiver the Timbers of our group in the opener. PartsNut got his second winner of the meet when Talking Pharoah ($8.00) proved to be no mummy’s dummy but Epic Miss Justice ($48.80) was dismissed in the third. The other , other , other Chad Brown horse Whitebeam ($17.60) failed to get us off our seats in the fourth but Mariachi ($5.60) had Eye123 dancing after the fifth. but Whitebeam ($17.60) Meanwhile we were all left with egg on our face after Silver Skillet ($7.60) brought home the bacon in the sixth.
It wasn’t a bowl of cherries in the seventh either as the winner was not on our Playlist ($5.80) but Casa Creed ($6.50) gave Pedalcar and Handykapper something to believe in after the ninth. I’m sure we will hear that someone was going to pick Yo Yo Candy ($94.00 ) but to tell the truth the result of the Sanford left us all with a sour taste in the mouth leaving an impression that Monet Never ($13.60) could not alleviate in the finale.

Day IV
With the handle for the first three days down significantly from last year , racing at Saratoga took another hit on Sunday as rain forced all races off the turf. Not surprisingly the inevitable changes affected many of our selections although there was no excuse for some of our young rascals not to be Girooving ($11.00) on a Sunday afternoon as Mike Maker made his mark in the opener. Bert Convy was looking to land a big fish in the second but Jolly Miss Jill ($5.20) was the one that got away . The third was scratched to only three runners with Sunset Louise ($2.80) scoring easily while Ensign Parker ($8.80) reported for duty in the winner’s circle after the fourth. Jake’s Orchard was a popular pick in the fifth but blew the start and although several tried to Ice The Kicker it was John Halvorsen and My Salad Days who won with Always A Warrior ($9.10).
In the sixth Doctor Disaster was looking for his fellow practitioner Dr Kringle to cure all ills but it was He’s Got Swagger ($8.60) who had the knockout punch ringside. Merasmag was hoping that Complete Agenda would be the horselet to get her off the mark in the seventh but it was knot to be as she suffered another Ouster ($7.80). Meanwhile Die Hard fan TimS70 was shouting Yippee-Ki-Yay after Nakatomi ($7.10) outdrew Sheriff Bianco in the eighth . In the ninth our group had tickets on most of the scratched runners and they remained Uncashed ($4.40) . Eye123 was hoping to end the day on a high with Marley’s Ghost but bah humbug he just got scrooged by Maggie ($7.10)
Finally there is no truth in the rumor that the NHC are investigating as to why Ten Furlongs and Maumeeriverangler amazingly had exactly the same picks today 😜

Day V
i can’t believe it’s the fifth day already . I knew the first steeplechase of the meet would produce a nice priced winner but unlike Propro and DB Lakers , I didn’t listen to the Belfast Banter($35.60) . In the second race PartsNut put on his blue suede shoes and ended up walking in Memphis ($9.40) with My Salad Days. DB Lakers was hitting three pointers all day today and took a stab with Golden Dagger ($11.20) which earned him Morey money in the third. After his close call last year PartsNut is determined to finish on top this time around and Don’t Be Late ($6.30) obliged for both him and the red hot DB Lakers in race four . It might only be Wednesday but DB Lakers incredible run continued in the fifth race when he decided to Rock The Weekend ($10.40) for his fourth winner of the day.
Meanwhile in the sixth race Queen’s Martini ($15.00) was neither shaken, nor stirred , but Jacckk88 certainly was Kaching in on her. Classic Colors was a popular pick in the seventh but only Merasmag and Beetlebomb had the foresight to land on Lisa’s Vision (s8.50) At the risk of being a bore it was no surprise when someone like Pedalcar was the only member to come up with Sixtythreecaliber ($4.80) in the eighth . Sadly nobody was Russian to the brandy Dekanter to celebrate Anna Karenine ($7.90) in the feature. It’s tough enough to read the PPs , never mind a novel by Tolstoy. Finally Beetlebomb chilled out a very fine handicapping day for the UIC contingent by ordering an Orange Freeze ($10.60) in the finale .

Day VI
It was a lovely day at the Spa and Portage ($11.80) got Maumeeriverangler off to a stunningly bright start in the opener. In the second Camourous and Bert Convy took a punt on Antonio of Venice ($3.80) and it was plain sailing all the way for our dynamic duo. In the third both Arsignman and SpiderJohn got a hot tip and it turned out to be Highly Flammable ($5.20). In the fourth those of us on Good Penny were left disappointed when the bad penny turned up in the form of Pretti Xtreme ($4.80). Mayor Jack and Uncle Eddie got plenty of votes in the fifth but only Beetlebomb was able to build up his bankroll with Crazy Mason ($9.00)
Irish bred horses swept the board in the sixth which was ever so sweet for them but our group had to just grin and bear it as Kodiac Wintergreen ($4.30) put on a gem of a performance . Spirit of St Louis ($3.00) flew home in the seventh but none of us were making boss moves at those odds. Meanwhile Arsignman , Pedalcar and Bert Convy were all happy to see Mosienko ($4.40 ) skate home in the eighth for an invaluable win. Arsignman and WrightStuff are among those experienced handicappers chasing the crown and their chances were vastly improved when Whisper Not ($30.80) made all the noise in the ninth. In the finale the well named winner Itsallcomingtogetha ($20.00) somehow did not make our playlist on what was a very profitable day for Arsignman in particular.

Day VII
its been a wet July in Saratoga and for the third time this meet several races were off the turf causing many of us to stay in our foxhole for the day and miss out on Billy The Greek ($27.80 ) in the opener . Meanwhile Headland ($8.80 ) proved to be the top gun girl in the second. Given his paltry odds Order of Magnitude ($3.00) did not attract any attention in the third but there was no way on God’s green earth that Cherokee Scot was missing out on Scotland ($6.90) in the fourth. Tie Breaker ($6.10) dug in to win the fifth while Linda Rice’s hot streak continued with Costa Terra ($12.20 ) in the sixth.
Abadin ($7.40 ) made plenty of noise in the seventh for John Halvorsen and Pedalcar while Bright Future ($24.40) was a big price Pletcher winner in the eighth that we missed out on. The Lake George however stayed on the turf and Surge Capacity ($13.00) proved to be the best of the Chad Brown foursome. The day ended on a cheery note however as Arsignman raised a glass to Bourbon Chase ($3.60) in the finale.

Day VIII
It was in my humble opinion a rather weak card for a Saturday at the Spa , a point Noted ($3.50) by the smaller than usual number of selections for the opener. SpiderJohn played the Paddington ($4.70) connection in the second and although he wasn’t of the same caliber as his Irish trained namesake he still had enough ability to bear the weight of favoritism . No one gave Spooky Lady ($5.30) a ghost of a chance in the third and although Jacckk8 tried to break the ice in the fourth he did not make the Winning Connection ($13.20). Meanwhile Goldandmyrrh and Turffan thought the price was right for Undervalued Asset ($4.50) in the fifth.
Roses for Debra ($5.50) had no takers in the sixth but Bitowisdom did find their romantic side with Valentine Candy ($7.70) in the seventh . PartsNut made a valiant effort in last year’s contest and this year it seems as simple for him as Taking Candy ($27.60) from a baby. Forego and TimS70 decided to ignore the Wet Paint ($4.90) warning which paid off in the featured ninth race. Finally I am not sure why there were four vet scratches in the last race but the end result did not prove Accretive ($3.70) to our group of punters,

Day IX
A beautiful Sunday at the Spa and it was Hard To Justify ($8,00) not being there for the opener. It was a day when hunch bets would have been very profitable but we dead end kids all missed out on Slip Mahoney ($5.00) in the second . If I were to ask you Howdyoumakeyourmoney ($18.40) after the third you would have probably said , by betting Nest ($3.70) in the fourth. Amazingly none of our basement followers went for Spankhurst ($4.80) in the fifth but Pedalcar and Bobtailnag finally broke our duck when unearthing Sam’s Treasure ($14.80) in the sixth.
Colonel Bowman ($3.70) was overlooked in the seventh but the kaching sound was heard again in the eighth when R Calli Kim ($7.70) rang the bell for Jacckk8 and Camorous. It looked for a while that they were running out of shrimp at Saratoga but fortunately for Ten Furlongs there still was the Ocean’s Reserve ($8.10) in the ninth. The day ended on a successful note when John Halvorsen and David Brown 41 hooked up with Three Girls ($8.50) in the finale.

Day X
Wednesday at the Spa means jump racing and after last week’s great banter we were all looking forward to Propro’s write up on the opening hurdle race. Unfortunately after completing a pleonasm almost as long as War and Peace his selection was scratched so no pot of Gold this week as L’Imperator ($5.20) ruled the roost. However things looked better for TimS70 and 5 Wide in the second when Lafitte’s Fleet ($13.40) sailed home. In the third Gram ($3.70) was finally able to take a weight of JolyB’s shoulders, albeit a small one. Meanwhile there was no catching Echo Zulu ($2.80) in the featured fifth race as she put up a performance worthy of a past champion. In the fifth race Don’t Let Me Down was a popular pick but he did , something to which we can all Relate ($21.00).
Goldandmyrrh must have thought he was home and dry when longshot April Antics was well clear approaching the finishing line and even diehard fans felt for him when Ichiban ($4.20) nailed it on the wire in the sixth. Nevertheless there were lots of happy faces after the seventh when Our Shot ($6.20) fired for John Halvorsen , JohnnyBatTBD , Forego and Camorous. Nothing much of note took place in races eight and nine before a huge controversy in the finale when CindyLouJazz pick of 20-1 shot He’s a Lucky Guy was denied victory by blatant interference from Indian Mischief ($12.20) . However the Saratoga stewards of Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Andrea Bocelli saw nothing wrong and the placings remained unaltered. This was mixed news for Beetlebomb who might not be able to find the correct thread to post his picks in but was genius enough to have both the first two .

Day XI
We have now entered the second quarter with Maumeeriverangler in the yellow jersey with Arsignman , PartsNut and DBLakers also well ahead of the chasing peloton. In the opener there was no Kodak moment for Instamatic with Jimmy The Tooth ($8.20) filling that cavity in the winner’s circle. SB West was no doubt pouting after his selection finished last in the second as we all managed to Miss San Gabriel ($5.50) . It Takes Heart ($6.00) to win this contest and JohnnyBatTBD certainly had that today in the third. Reigning Chick ($8.10) who apparently was not named after the late HM The Queen , found no loyal subjects in the fourth but that was not the case in the fifth when our group led by Italian Stallion , Phlier Freak , Bobtailnag and Madame Blum watched Mise En Scene ($11.00) enjoy a pleasant passage on her way to victory.
I’m not sure if it was a hunch bet by My Salad Days but with the owner being Dicke Racing and the trainer Cox there was always the likelihood that Caldwell Luvs Gold ($13.20) would end up on top in the sixth. The NYRA stewards having suffered the slings and arrows from social media after yesterday’s fiasco decided to make a huge bigly decision in the seventh and disqualify Eyes on Target which was tough on Phlier Freak but Onion wasn’t crying as Land Biscuit ($12.20) took the cheese. Not even JolyB was on Next ($3.20) who was much the best in the eighth but Turffan got the wagons rolling again with Pioneering Spirit ($6.70) in the ninth. Lots of picks in the finale but instead of Charging to the pay out window we were all heading to the ATM after Sosua Summer ($9.30) breezed home.
Finally tonight’s Tribute to our much maligned Saratoga stewards :

Day XII
An eleven race Friday card brought the UIC contestants out in force and tournament leader Maumeeriverangler is Bustin Away ($29.40 ) after taking the opener where Grommet also liked the name of the winner. Propro is also right up there and he won’t be disappearing Into The Sunrise ($20.20) any time soon after shining in the second. DBLakers moved into second place as he and Ten Furlongs hooked a nice one on the River Tay ($21.60) in the third. After that hot start our group stopped for water and all missed Hydra ($16.60) in the fourth and Colloquy ($4.60) in the fifth.
Chad Brown is striking at a rate of around 25% which is very impressive since normally has more than one runner in each flat race and yet again it was the other Chad horse, Faraday ( $16.00) that provided the magnetism in the sixth. Pedalcar has been moving along nicely despite the hot weather and his chances of taking the title will not have been Disarmed ($7.50) at the conclusion of the seventh. I didn’t think anyone would go for the odds on favorite in the eighth and that observation came to Prove Right ($3.80) . In the ninth the much maligned Fredo ($11.00) , finally showed that he was smart and got the respect of Beetlebomb and Phlier Freak. The featured Amsterdam Stakes proved to be a Dutch treat for Triguy as New York Thunder ($13.00) was lightning fast. Lastly we had several chances in the finale but none displayed the Urgent Fury ($16.00) of the winner.

Day XIII
Another Saturday at Saratoga, another NYRA Stewards controversy which Ten Furlongs summed up perfectly on the main thread . The day had actually got off to a bright start with the heartwarming story of Carson’s Run ($13.00) taking the opener which also made TC feel good. Scocciatore ($12.40) made a right nuisance of himself in the second but Onion and Ten Furlongs were not complaining. It was hats of to Volkert ($53.00) in the third but the only water color we were looking at was the rain beginning to fall on the track. With the Women’s World Cup currently going on it was rather appropriate that My Salad Days scored with a Corner Kick ($11.80) in the fourth. Meanwhile Sterling Silver ($6.40) shone the brightest in the fifth but none of our group went home with the gold. Indypacer must have been concerned when Overacting ($18.00) was reluctant to load in the sixth but once the gates opened he went to the front and never looked back.
A drum roll please for D Wayne Lukas as his first time Arrogate colt was able to Seize The Grey ($34.80) in the hot MSW seventh race. It wouldn’t be the same if Bill Mott did not have a winner on his birthday and Elite Power ($8.80) gave him the perfect present when racking up 8 in a row in the eighth. The ninth race was taken off the turf making it a Tough Street ( $12.30) for any of us to cross. In the featured Bumper Car race Forte ($3.50) came out on top which was disarming for everyone watching this *hit show apart from Mverrone. Queen’s Dancer ($28.00) only got royal approval in the eleventh while Callie’s Grit ($5.10) was true on a day of mostly missed opportunities,

Day XIV
The third Sunday at the Spa saw our worst group performance to date no doubt impacted by scratches from four races being off the turf due to Saturday’s heavy rain. Maumeeriverangler maintains the lead as we head into week 4 of the meet but it’s still a wide open contest. We can say for certain however that DBLakers will not be crowned champion as he is the first one finished but well done to him on making a profit , returning $85.40 for his 40 selections. As expected nobody was going to pick the entry Miz Sense ($4.40) in the opener and Vintage ($31.20) was also ignored in the second where Joey the Fish floundered. We couldn’t get a Handal on Certified Lover Boy ($20.60) in the third and no thanks were given to Obrigada ($3.70) in the fourth. You would have done well if you bet the farm on Fannie and Freddie ($14.80) in the fifth but no one was willing to risk their mortgage on it.
SB West has been ice cold in the contest so far but got off the mark at the twentieth attempt when Aly’s Beach ($18.60) put on a first class display in the sixth in what turned out to be our only winner on the day. Jerry the Nipper ($16.00) clawed his way to the front in the seventh while Leftembehind ($11.40) lived up to his name in the eighth. Bill Mott’s great birthday weekend continued when 9yo veteran Channel Maker ($32.40) took the feature after Rebel’s Romance unfortunately clipped heels and went down and we hope that jockey Richie Mullen makes a speedy recovery from his injuries. Little Prankster ($3.50) took the finale on a day which could hardly be described as Sunday Funday.

Day XV
Week 4 of the contest started with several players looking for Restitution in the opening hurdle race but it was Beetlebomb who crawled up the leaderboard after McTigue ($19.00) pulled off the upset. Fast Buck Freddy ($11.40) failed to generate any fast bucks for us in the second but Pedalcar made the right move with Chess Master ($4.30) in the third. We were all keeping an eye out for Un Ojo in the fourth but he just failed to fulfill his Olympic Dreams ($6.40). Meanwhile there was a dream debut for the Weaver trainee Brocknardini ($14.00) in the fifth but it wasn’t a hit with our group.
Miss M M was a very popular choice in the sixth but only Doctor Disaster was going Stir Crazy ( $9.30) at the finishing pole. Last year’s long time leader PartsNut has proven to be a grizzly competitor and ended his campaign in style with Bear Oak ($15.40) taking the honors in the seventh. Doctor Disaster was feeling mighty haughty after Technical Analysis ($3.80) took the feature to give him a double on his birthday. Forego and JohnnyBatTBD were also full of beans after KaufyMaker ($7.40) roasted the opposition in the ninth. Unfortunately no glasses of Fuligni ($22.40) were raised after the tenth as trainer James Bond gave us all the proverbial gold finger.

Day XVI
I figured it was going to be a quiet Thursday contest wise when I saw there was only one page of selections and as it turned out I wasn’t far wrong . Get Spooled ($14.80) started the thread in the opener and Invisible War ($5.10) was not seen either in the second . We were still having a problem with Implementation ($5.00) in the third and after the fourth it looked as if we had all Suspended Campaign ($4.70) . Propro would have got us off the mark had he got his picks in on time so it was left to Pedalcar to shout home Lets Go Big Blue ($7.10) in the fifth.
Lots of picks in the MSW sixth but there was no Gala Brand ($18.80) recognition . Recent 70 year old Bill Mott showed the young dudes how to do it when I’mhavingamoment ($3.70) gave him his third success of the day in the seventh much to the the delight of My Salad Days and Real Quiet . You needed a Bold Endeavor ($44.20) to have the winner of the eighth but none of us was brave enough. TimS70 posted a nameless picture of his selection in the ninth but I’m sure it wasn’t Chad Brown’s old bookkeeper McKulick ($10.40) . Our defending champion Madame Blum is not going to give up her crown without a fight and once again she was on the P Money ($27.20) in the finale .

Day XVII
The Friday before the Whitney and PhlierFreak was predicting a Perfect Day while Jacckk8 said he really liked the card. Unfortunately both were completely wrong and a day that started with four races being taken off the turf ended with the last four races being canceled due to heavy rain. Not surprisingly our group’s performance was as dismal as the weather . None of us was composed enough to tune in to Ludwig ($5.50) in the opener and he had barely completed his last movement before Honest Al ($13.20) made the motion into the winners circle in the second. We thought that Linda Rice would probably win the third but unfortunately we didn’t have the correct Risk Profile ($11.20). Meanwhile Kara Para ($9.30) was another turkey that we failed to gobble up in the fourth but My Salad Days brightened an increasingly gloomy afternoon with Sky and Sand ($12.80) in the fifth. Happy Bob ($3.70) failed to cheer us up in the sixth and in what turned out to be the final race of the day Turffan enjoyed some joie de vivre with the French challenger Elusive Princess ($4.70) reigning supreme in the Saratoga Oaks .

Day XVIII
“ Mann Tracht, Un Gott Lacht” is an old Yiddish saying meaning, “Man Plans, and God Laughs.” Despite the most careful planning, the road of life is totally unpredictable. We might have well thought out strategies and exciting new futures could be ahead of us or unforeseen roadblocks can hold us back. The best-laid plans in life can be upended by unexpected changes, which might be either disappointing or exhilarating. Personal or other setbacks, losses of loved ones, illnesses or accidents, broken hearts or tortured souls, are common occurrences in our lives. On the other hand, fate can sometimes provide unanticipated good fortune or heartening experiences. Today at Saratoga we unfortunately witnessed the most negative of experiences. Maple Leaf Mel was such a good news story for racing. Owned by a beloved NFL football coach , an unbeaten New York bred trained by a young Canadian woman whom the horse was named after. The stars were aligned and for almost the whole race we were all enthralled as Maple Leaf Mel dominated the opposition until she broke down in the shadow of the wire which none of us watching will ever forget.
My apologies if I missed out your winner today but if I am correct the only one of consequence was Turffan’s selection of Fair Dinkum ($33.80) in the finale.

Well said Bev.
I was going to add some comments trying to explain/reconcile the feelings that we have but I trust that all of us that have been fans of these gorgeous animals have our own views on how to get through these situations.
As Paseana would would say (and please forgive me for taking the liberty) rest in peace Maple Leaf Mel...you were a good girl.

Bev, your fellow Scot Robert Burns expressed an appropriate sentiment almost 250 years ago; it still rings true: "The best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft agley; and leave us nought but grief and pain for promised joy." RIP beautiful filly.

Day XIX
An air of gloom hung around Saratoga on Sunday and with another fatality in the fourth race I’m sure we are all glad to see the back of a tough week on the track. Contest leader Maumeeriverangler decided to weigh the risks and used up three of his picks in the opener but it was only SB West who came out with the wealth after Ozara ($26.00) triumphed. The word was out that Ways and Means ($3.40) was pretty special and she put on a spectacular debut in the second much to the delight of PonyGirl, Large Mac, SpiderJohn and Arsignman who moved into second place. Miss Domina ($10.00) gave us all a beating in the third but JohnnyBatTBD certainly knew WhatLoveLooksLike ($8.50) in the fourth.
We all failed to flag Burgee ($19.00) in the fifth and also sailed past Empire Island ($12.20) in the sixth and whoever said you Can’t Keep Me Down ($26.00) was not mistaken in the seventh. Mverrone finally got us back on track in the eighth with some Brightwork ($12.20) before we suffered another Ruda ($6.00) wakening in the ninth. Therefore it was a big relief to end the day on a positive note when Goldandmyrrh and Pedalcar made a Forward Move ($7.80) in the finale .
