Fascinating article. It can be very rough to play in the same mutuel pools as the CRW's, especially if you are a tote watcher and look for a particular price before placing your bet.
I wonder if any of the tracks have been able to compute the success ratio of any CRW's, i.e. if Santa Anita knows that Elite Turf Club 2 wagered $45.6 million in 2021, do they know how much they won on that amount? Are they able to beat the takeout and/or do better than the mass market pool of bettors? Finally, if they are so successful, what is their source of capital? Are these the equivalents of "Whales" or is this a pool of investor money that is run by the fund manager for a percentage of the profits? Clearly I have much to learn about this trend.

For about a decade or more now, I tried to only play tracks that didn't allow CRWs. Oaklawn was one track that did not allow these teams into their pools, for many many years. They shunned the CRWs. I just don't know why they are saying other tracks should follow NYRAs "lead" here since Oaklawn was doing it years ago. I believe don't know if they allow them now, but if so, I'm sure quite restricted. There were only about 3 tracks that didn't allow them that I played precisely because of this. Tampa may have been one of them........at the time, they simply offered less rebate to the CRWs to keep them out Those CRW teams have a lot of $$. The equipment alone to do the algorithms at split second intervals, and be able to push the kind of money they do thru, is pretty unbeatable. Really hurts the odds for recreational players who can't cover the amount of wagering combinations -------no human can. It's math, similar to stock market arbitrage--somebody writes the programs and the programs place the wagers automatically. Anybody CAN start their own CRW, put it in a place like St. Kitts, get an MIT math geek to write the programs, and have a staff of about 40 people......you'd need about $8 million to start one though. Dana Parnham was one of the early CRW guys with standardbredcanada back in 1995-2015. Others like RGS have done well. standardbredcanada.ca/trot/april-2011/four-billion-dollar-man.htmlSome of it is also based on when races go off, tracks that run simultaneously, etc.........that's all in the algorithms as well.
