Two spot plays before diving into the Santa Anita Card.
GP R8- OCLM25000N1X 8.5F turf 3up
Team Valor has #2- Maritime Wings (6-1) with Pletcher/Irad, perhaps Hooper has an insight. Ran well here over the fake dirt last month, was a GII-placed, precocious 2yo in IRE for Joseph O'Brien, but has underwhelmed in three US grass tries. It is sad for me to see #3- Therapist (5-1) in for a $25K tag today, how about we just call time on his career? If he's still sound, happy, and wants to be a racehorse, who am I to say, but he hasn't won in two years. My pick is #6- On Thin Ice (3-1) from the Casse barn. Broke his maiden at first asking in style here last August, then was rushed through stakes company while gradually improving. Had a troubled trip in the Battaglia at TP, and went to the shelf until November, when he returned with a good second on the AW (beating Maritime Wings) and another good second once the GP turf course re-opened in December. Homebred son of More Than Ready has some class about him, can fire his best today. #7- Causin' Mayhem (4-1) is Todd & Luis, Into Mischief homebred seems like he should be better on dirt, but that's why Todd is in the HOF and I'm punching a keyboard. Maybe Edgard Zayas just ran him impossibly wide last out, but he got thumped by On Thin Ice. #9- Tapthespeedofsound (20-1) is the pacemaker on paper, and just ran a career best in an OTT-AW win here on the 1st. Was progressive through his first three turf races, then ran too poorly to be true in two Woodbine starts. Bullet in the holster, and the one to fear.
EX- 6,9/2,3,6,7,9 WIN/PL- 9
TAM R9- OCLM32000N2X 8F turf 3up
#1- Creed (7-2) is a deep closer from Shug with his Tampa main-man Morales aboard. Career hasn't panned out as expected for $650K purchase, would need a very past pace to contend today. My best bet #2- Original (9-2) goes for Terranova/Camacho, both of whom have started the meet in good form. Expensive son of Quailty Road had an okay 2021 running in stakes company, then missed most of this year until October, when he ran around Baqueduct and got hot, tired, and dirty in his comebacker. His three December works here at Tampa suggest a change in form forthcoming, with two bullets noted. Maybe he likes palms and Cubanos? #8- Bullet Force (9-2) runs for Delgado/Batista and Amo Racing USA, which is the US arm of Amo Racing (Kia Joorabchian) in their familiar purple & white silks (Go Bears Go, Persian Force, Mojo Star). Joorabchian and his two kids were in the winner's circle at GP after Race 7 yesterday where Olivia Darling won for Delgado. Maybe he's going to be over at Tampa Bay Downs today? Bullet Force was a good handicap horse in GB, but hasn't shown that same form here in two US starts. #10- Montauk Summer (4-1) should be forwardly placed under Centeno, chased wire-to-wire winner Mid Day Image here in last ending a three-race win streak, horse continues his improvement under the care of Mike Dini, who is on a tear this meet.
