Maybe there should be a rule against this strategy for next year? Putting a hold on a horse until something better comes up impacts other selections. While it’s back out there to pick after the cancellation, your stable might not have a slot anymore or enough money left to claim it since your strategy changed after that pick was no longer available.
This has nothing to do with the voided claim rule when a claim is voided at the track. I think the commissioner should have the option as well for a similar incident during a race but where there was no real claim on the runner.

I thought those were the rules in past years but apparently I was wrong or maybe they were changed for this year's version.

I looked at the rules and didn't see anything but saw that it was done before which is why I asked. In keeping with the spirit of the game I'm not going to change my pick. Anyway, with my luck he'd win the Breeders Cup Classic if I dropped him.

Will put it to a vote. I have not seen evidence of this being used as an actually strategy to date. For this year’s contest I will allow cancelations up to 24 hours before a race in order to give contestants a chance to select horses which have been selected and subsequently cancelled.

My faux stable is complete. All of them hit the board and I should be midpack after this first round.
Spy Novel - (1-1-0-0) - $16,800 - This 3yo PA bred gelding is going to be my make or break star. 70 Beyer to break his maiden on the grass. Expecting a jog in a starter alw next out before n1x, 250k not out of the question. Miss You Ajax - (1-0-0-1) - $2,900 - 3yo KY bred gelding, only a 29 Beyer in his debut, but I'm expecting solid progression in his new barn and a good year in the Maryland claiming game. Schnuer Will - (1-0-0-1) - $5,236 - 4yo PA bred filly faced as tough a field as possible last out and rallied wide on an inside track. All open and PA bred allowance levels available. Musical Heart - (1-0-1-0) - $10,000 - 8yo Ky bred gelding was a game second after an 18 month layoff behind Bev's new stable star War Stopper. Hoping he races enough to make this reach worthwhile.
Stable total - $34,936
