I once taught an exchange student from Bahrain for a semester.
It was culture shock for both of us. His points of view were a little
extreme, to say the least. He believed what he believed. That was it.
Not unlike every other young person in the class of 1st & 2nd year students.
The difference was, he'd seen things that no one would ever want to imagine.
He spoke of horrors he'd witnessed and his strict fundamentalist justification for the way things were back home vs. the anything goes way of the United States.
The young man was 21 or 22 with an imposing build and a strong Arabic accent.
Many of my marshmallow American students were actually frightened of him, at first.
I guessed correctly that my young man would have an affinity for thoroughbred horses.
He seemed to soften his tough guy image when we discussed horse racing and pedigree. "The truth is in the Horse... the beauty is in the Bloodlines." He was poetic about horses.
So after scaring the class while introducing himself, we found a way through a shared love.
I assigned the following poem to be his first Oral Interpretation of Literature presentation...
He did a great job!
I Know Great Horses Live Again Somewhere in time’s own space There must be some sweet pastured place Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow Some paradise where horses go, For by the love that guides my pen I know great horses live again.
