Newmarket is the headquarters ('HQ') of British racing, home to the Jockey Club. Once a year a race is held for horses owned by members of The Jockey Club. It is known as the Whip Challenge. Sir Mark Prescott explains:
"The whip is made from the hairs of Eclipse..." Wow!
Not a race to bet on (4 horses), but definitely one to watch. Godolphin's GII-placed Victory Dance versus Juddmonte's Nostrum, a winner at first asking that looked to be any kind. Royal Ascot winner Holloway Boy is also in with a chance here. Tactical race to be sure, Buick vs. Moore vs. Tudhope.
Five horse field. I have no questions about the class of both #1- Island Brave (6-1) nor #5- Thunderous (Even), but I do wonder if 16F doesn't stretch them a bit. #3- Ranch Hand (3-1) returns from a long layoff but fires well fresh, and even though he seems better on the AW he eats these two-milers for breakfast. Trainer Balding is on fire.
NEW R6 (11:10am EDT)- 1m4f (Row) Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-100)
Funny race, with some very well-bred underachievers. #1- Dhahabi (5-2) has run okay against Adayar and Magical Morning in last two, stretchout to 12F over good ground should suit. Won't underestimate Saeed bin Suroor at this time of year either, as he often gets his Dubai runners a start or two to hold their form before heading back home. #2- Global Heat (3-1) isn't a prolific winner, but he ran well here last season, and has good form over this trip and ground.
