This is such an amazing racing family. Freddie Head is retiring at the end of this year. Freddy started at 16. That's 59 years, as both a jockey and a trainer. Freddie rode 4 Arc winners to victory: Bon Mot (1966), San San (1972), Ivanjica (1976), Three Troikas (1979). The list of other illustrious horses Freddy rode to wins is too long to list. He rode Miesque to victory 9 times including her 2 wins in the BC Mile. Miesque (Nureyev) who produced Kingmambo after her illustrious racing career. But we will never forget Freddy as a trainer, the trainer of Goldikova who won and raced in 3 nations, and who won the BC Mile 3 times, Queen Anne Stakes 1x, Prix Rothschild 1x, Falmouth Stakes 1x, Prix du Moulin de Longchamp 1x, Prix Jacques Le Marois 1x, Prix de la ForĂȘt 1x, Prix d'Ispahan 1x. Freddy's sister, Criquette Head (IMHO one of the greatest female horse trainers ever) trained 3 Arc winners (Treve, who won 2x and Three Troikas 1x). What blew my mind was that Three Troikas, Northern Dancer's granddaughter, was trained by Criquette, raced under Criquette's mom's colors, and was ridden to victory by her brother, Freddie. That's some trifecta family race right there. And Freddie had ridden Three Troikas' sire, Lyphard, to victory many times as well. And so many of these horses trained, ridden, raced, were bred by their father, Alex Head. I believe I have quoted Criquette a few times when asked about drug free racing she said: "It just requires good horsemanship." Sounds simple enough, right? I thought since she is retired and so is Freddy, maybe they can fly over and give some seminars, since our trainers can't seem to put down the hypodermic needles.
