I was lucky that a friend of my Dad owned a used car lot and had an eye out for me on a muscle car. He came across with this bass ass ride R/T with a 440 magnum. My first car. Mine was a copper color and it blew away everyone's car in high school.

Now that brings back memories. My first car was a Renault 4CV. I bought two of them from a local junk yard for something like $125 and with the help of my older brother and a local shade tree mechanic combined the parts from the two to make one serviceable car and disposed of the other parts at the same junk yard. It had a 750 cc engine that created around 28 horsepower - just a bit slower than a VW of the time. This was 1962 or so -- I was a senior in high school, didn't have much money and this seemed to be a way to get a set of wheels.
During the time I owned it I became convinced that it had been assembled immediately after a wine break. It constantly overheated and had a rear transaxle not unlike the Corvair. If you cornered too aggressively the rear end could lose traction with little warning and the dreaded oversteer would lead to some exciting moments. Still, like all first cars it brings back fond memories and I was sad to sell it just before heading off to college.
Here's a link to one that is much nicer than mine was.

Right here (if the link works)- this is even the right color! images.app.goo.gl/K3A2XvoAuzEsb1k871967 Chevy Impala SS. I paid $700 for it in 1971. I loved that car. edit- mine however was a 327 not a 427 as this one apparently is and had a black interior.

Hoop = There was a 1961 Impala in Mecum's 2021 Kissimmee car auction that sold for $220,000.00. It was a ragtop and looked stock had twin 4's and a 409. I believe that's the highest price for a '61 ever.

I don't know if that rake on the front of that Plymouth was factory or not. Chrysler use to do a lot of goofy things. Remember the 1971 - 73 Chargers were built with "power bulges" on the hoods? The edges on the hoods stuck up an inch or two above the fender lines.

I have to smile at the mention of what we had to pay for our first rides. For a few hundred bucks we could get half decent wheels. (and gas .30 cents a gallon).....the killer as I remember was the insurance. Cost about what the car did. The thing about those days, you could look down the road and immediately identify what you were looking at.(Charger,Firebird,Mustang,Cuda,Challenger,Galaxie,Maverick,Cougar, etc, etc) now they all look alike.

Mercury, Edsel, Studebaker, Checker, Willys, AMC, Packard, DeSoto, Kaiser-Frazer (Most never heard of them), and many others.
When I used to fix up old cars I usually but my parts from a junkyard called Taylors. While there I would go over to the area where they piled up the cars and parts ready for the crusher. If I found any still carrying their badges I would pop them off with a screw driver. I know I still have 40 or 50 0f them down stairs.

bobtail...for a second there I thought you were going to list the Model T (you old buzzard lol!) Yep all those you mention most here are a few years away from driving (tho I did own a Pontiac Star Chief 1959....like driving a tank, no power brakes or steering. had to take two hands to the wheel just to turn the sucker.(I pity anyone who ran into that beast) Nowadays I wouldn't dare try to troubleshoot what they're putting out. PS..those badges are worth a few bucks, I'd say they would be good for your retirement...but I think your way past that stage lol

It was circa 1970 when that song came out , I'll always remember because my 2nd car was a 1953 Lincoln Capri.

And the Checker was made right here in my hometown of Kalamazoo. For those unfamiliar with it the Checker was the car of choice for taxicabs for many years. Tons of rear seat room and built like a tank.

You're right about those Checkers. It was not unheard of them going 300,000 to 400,000 miles.
The Kaiser was best know for making the small Henry J (Henry J Kaiser) and in 1951 Sears had Kaiser make some Henry J,s with the name Alstate on them and sold them through the Sears Catalog.
