Anyone else live in cicada country? I can hear them off in the distance. For those that don't know this happens every 17 years as they come out of the ground to mate. This only happens in a few states and nowhere else in the world. If you don't like bugs, move for a month. They are around the size of your thumb and clumsy as hell landing on anything including you. No stinger or bite just kinda creepy with billions flying around. Males are loud too. Windows closed, air on and you can still hear them. You can not drive with the windows open without having a FEW encounters with them. You need to fill your car's wiper fluid and the roads going through a forest like 68, well they get slick because of so many dead bugs to drive on. And of course an anchor ate a chocolate covered cicada this morning. Just about everything that eats bugs won't starve this year. BILLIONS in parts of 16 states and I live in cicada central.

Never seen much less heard of this creature. We get locusts, rolly-pollies, and mosquitos although it's been so dry here the mosquitos are few and far between. Never understood what made a person cover any bug in chocolate and consume it. Gross.

They leave their 'shell/skin' on the sides of trees. As a kid in this area you played with that.
This is called brood 10. Other cicadas are here every year just no where near the numbers of this brood or the length of life. Most have a 10 year cycle of life not 17 sucking on tree roots.
Too cool for them in your area Hoop. At the house right now it really hasn't gotten to a temp they like consistently. 30 degree drops can slow anything I guess.

OK the boys can get up to 100 decibels or LOUD
Sound is measured in decibels (dB). A whisper is about 30 dB, normal conversation is about 60 dB, and a motorcycle engine running is about 95 dB. Noise above 70 dB over a prolonged period of time may start to damage your hearing. Loud noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm to your ears.

the real question we should be asking ourselves, ( and anyone else who will stop and answer you), is if they were to be known as Buddy Holly and the Cicadas would rock n roll be different today? please keep your answers less than 100 words.

Sometimes you're the windshield Sometimes you're the bug Sometimes it all comes together baby Sometimes you're a fool in love Sometimes you're the Louisville slugger baby Sometimes you're the ball Sometimes it all comes together baby Sometimes you're going to lose it all

I thought that I had seen most of it—-wrong They are everywhere now in my wooded environment. Coming out of the ground, flying around and landing on everything. As an old guy, I have seen this a few times, but maybe not this intense. Probably due to the warmer winters?

every 17 years plus I got to thinking about other broods that have a 10 year cycle, there has to be some overlap and those 10 year varieties probably vary in size. It's just been noise off in the distance here with squirrels and birds feasting on them. I've only seen 1

If I have to listen to one more cicada recipe on the radio and online.....
Of course, somebody has to capitalize on this..somehow....fully expect it to be on the menu "coming to a restaurant near you!"
In Louisiana we used to say If It Fits in A Pot, Cook It!

CBS news this morning .... cicada tacos. There are so many in the Baltimore and Washington that they show up on weather radar! I tried to take a short video but the file was too big to post, and then it rained which kinda knocked everything down a bit. I was just hoping to catch a few flying and the NOISE. There was a family counting the shells in the yard and stopped at 2,000.

oh how could I forget cicada beer which I don't think has any in it, just capitalizing on the moment. I do want a can though. You never know but it could be valuable at some point. They screw up June and then are mostly gone. I actually saw a hawk pick one off in the air.
