Day XXII Left an overcast Saratoga this afternoon to run into an absolute monsoon on the drive to Philadelphia. Enough with the precipitation this summer already Mother Nature. Meanwhile at the Spa David Brown got the day off to a bright start when Silver Wings Reven ($25.40) flew home in the opener. Asians Way ($5.10) and Shanghai Dreams ($3.90) then chalked up a quick hunch double that none of us saw. In fact for the rest of the day apart from Triguy we were in a Fog of War ($13.80) that not even a Lightworker ($13.80) could see through. With the rains returning again Karenâs Gem ($7.00) had to go 5Wide to get him and Trapshot the groupâs final victory of the day. Iâm not sure if Youâre to Blame ($7.20) for this lack of success but its time to Take Charge Aubrey ($4.30) , Cause Iâm Alex ($12.80) Ps I left my recycling next to the bike.

Day XXIII At long last we had a day without rain and on the turf at Saratoga - the main reason being of course that I was hundreds of miles away at Delaware Park. Cool As You Like ($5.10) opened the dayâs proceedings showing some Elegant Zip ($3.70) while BPiets and Wrightstuff had No Need to Appeal ($10.80 ) after scoring with Avery Maeve ($4.10) in the fourth. Shesasuperfreak ($27.20) proved just that in the fifth while the nine year old Turco Bravo ($7.10) chilled out the field in the sixth. Civil Union ($10.60 ) vowed the crowd in the seventh and Still Krz ($5.10) won after all these years in the eighth. Biggest success of the day was Stillwater Cove ($22.40) in the ninth who proved once again that the Bobtailnag is not just an Overnight Success ($11.60).

Day XXIV Sorry Iâm not acting the goat but it really was another nice day at the Spa on Thursday as we completed sixty percent of the contest but can anyone stop runaway leader GAM who still has half his picks left ? TimS70 tried to pick up the mantle in the first but was caught short when Seauxtale ($24.80) stepped up to the plate. None of us were able to Securitiz ($6.30) in the second but much to our wonderment Triguy was absatootly overjoyed when Bonita Bianca rolled over a few stones ($9.40) in the third. In the fourth Beetlebomb was hoping to get the payoff from a Two Cent Tootsie roll but unfortunately for him it was not Tradeable ($7.00). Half the forum was looking for a giant run from Tusk in the fifth but sadly it was Souperfast ($12.00) who coasted and brought home the ivory. Letâs face it if you are looking for mucho glory in this contest then you have to pick winners like Pink Sands ($12.00) as Ozzy and Triguy did in the sixth . In the seventh Casseâs Story had his share of fans and for a while it looked like he would make his mark but in the end he was no match for the Adulator ($6.00). Finally it was definitely a Cool Beans ($9.00) day for Ozzy and Chazaward as they both got off the dreaded duck. Hopefully former champs, SammytheSage, NDSC32 and TC took note as they are currently 0 fer a zillion !

Day XXV The thunderstorms returned to Saratoga on Friday on a day when a couple of long shots gave our group the chance to catch lightning in a bottle. Unfortunately none of us did and we will all have to pay the price for not showing the required hustle n heart to catch GAM who is chugging along like a steam engine on his way to verdant pastures. Mesotherm ($6.60) which sounds like a class action law suit disease was the winner of the opener but all of us were immune to it . Frostie Anne ($7.00) may have pleased the millions of followers of Larryâs Picks when she won the second but merely gave our members the chills. Indeed the whole day was one Giant Booboo ($2.70) and more or less an Unbridled Adventure ($4.40) as our picks were as cold as Frosted Ice ($13.00) After a short Pause for the Cause ($3.80) in the sixth BigRed 1 made our ONLY score of the day when Sweet Bye and Bye ($14.00 ) said farewell to the rest of the field in the seventh . Then came the two big missed opportunities. Firstly Leavemeathegate ($35.20) , which is surprisingly not trained by Todd Pletcher, pulled off the upset in the eighth and then Chattel ($47.00) took home all the goods in the ninth. All that remained was for popular trainer Gary Contessa to take the finale with The Chamo ($10.40) who wasnt as popular with us !

Day XXVI A sunny Saturday at the Spa but when we saw Noah arrive on Friday night we knew that we were going to be off the turf today with multiple scratches. Hopefully this is the last of the wet weather for the meet and Noah can head off to Longchamps instead for the Arc. Otis got a much needed lift in the opener when Archofthediver ($16.00) went through the motions and unsurprisingly took gold in the sloppy conditions. I donât want to sound mean but Standard Deviation ($2.90) was not what the doctor ordered and the result was a disaster for those picking the longshot Vineyard Sound. Much better luck in the third for DocSpa and Italian Stallion as JS Bach ($7.90) was composed and looked the part especially in his final movements. Meanwhile Bitowisdom was shouting âBravoâ as Endorsed ($18.60) committed larceny to finish ahead of plan in the fourth. After the fifth race the loudest Sounds of Saratoga were the popping of light bulbs on the tote board as Elizabeth Nicole ($42.60) went wire to wire for the suddenly hot Gary Contessa barn đą Otis was also having a good day and his selection in the sixth Code of Honor ($15.00 ) was not so bad either. Our four race streak ended in the seventh with none of us fit enough to do a Cartwheel ($9.40) but SpiderJohn did have a Rushing Fall ($4.70) in the feature which is why he is so placid. TurfeyeJoe was popping the Veuve after Eskimo Kisses ($20.00) who was highly touted on this board many moons ago, finally peaked at the right time and came home sweetly in the Alabama.

Day XXVII It was a peach of a day at the Spa on BPiets Day , a tribute to the legendary handicapper from the Great White North...lol ! In the opener unsurprisingly no one went for the odds on favorite Glory to Kitten ($ 3.80) who went free n clear to win. However Nick Vito got a pizza da action when logging in another winner with Timber Ghost ($11.00) in the second. Popular choice Alternative Energy ran out of fuel in the stretch to let Tap Tap Taparoo ($21.60) win stylishly in the third. Winners for our group were becoming hard to find and we came up empty again in the fourth when Moonlit Garden ($6.30) was the place to shine. Please excuse my charisma but it was the same story in the fifth with not even a heroic activist selecting Newspaperofrecord ($5.00). I guess We Should Talk ($13.40) to Shoes and Bobtailnag after they broke the losing sequence in the sixth - I just hope one of them made an outrageous bet on the exacta. Big drama in the seventh where longshot It Just Hit The Wire hit the wire first but was dqâd for also hitting Shanghai Bonnie who in turn knocked Two Dozen Roses ($9.40) into the rail. Unluckily for Hooper and Bobtailnag, Shanghai Bonnie was pipped for second leaving Two Dozen Roses in the vase which was more good news for Nick Vito. The eighth race proved to be a favorable outcome for the easy to please Arsignman and our resident physician DocSpa as Petrov ($21.40) never looked back after breaking luckily in front. Like me that great Johnny Cash song , Joly B is getting there one piece at a time and racked up another odds on winner when Admission Office ($3.60) made the grade in the ninth. In the finale there was a huge play by our group on Fortythreeoeight N but unfortunately he needed more than a compass to find his way to the winners circle. Thankfully Frangooch and Ziggy did not have the same Blinded Vision ($31.40) as the majority of the forum.

Day XXVIII Another nice day at the Spa with the track fast and the turf good but again a lot of scratches which made handicapping and contest selection rather tedious. I remain hopeful that the weather holds up and we handicappers get a sporting chance to show our capabilities in the final two weeks of the meet. In the opener Large Mac was not the Benefactor ($7.70) of picking the wrong half of the entry but the chasing pack was happy to see that GAM , who is still mini miles ahead did ,not extend his lead while SpiderJohn can be consoled by the fact that his Belgian waffled. Our leader dodged another bullet in the second when longshot Third Card Down ($32.20) turned out to be the ace. Big Muddy cost $850k as a yearling but he is turning out to be a big duddy and his owners probably needed a fireball shot after home bred Point to Remember ($3.60) was the master of his domain in the third. In the fourth race Grommet introduced himself into the top ten as Concrete Rose ($26.40) blossomed like a sure thing while Ten Furlongs had the rest of us go crimson with envy as Roll Tide Roll ($9.70) rolled in the fifth. They might have to build a shrine at Saratoga for that great dame of New York racing Linda Rice who had yet another winner with Miko ($9.80) in the sixth. The seventh looked like a wide open affair but it was Miss Gossip ($12.00) who talked the talk and rumbled home in a quality time. Can You Diggit ($14.00) earned jockey Junior Alvarado a well deserved pat on the back and wine not as he completed a double in the Evan Shipman. In the finale in what might go down as one of the hunch plays of all time former champ Badactor rocketed to the top of the leaderboard at GAMMA speed with Wonât Be Missed ($98.00) BOOM BOOM !!!!

Day XXIX Your humble correspondent is now back at Saratoga for the conclusion of the meet and the daily recaps will be sporadic at best for the last ten days ! It rained again but there was not a Surprising Soul ($11.00) among us as Promises Broken ($2.90) in the first seven races had us screaming for mercy with not one winner deemed by our group to be either Trustworthy ($9.50) at best or worth MakinâOut ($4.10) at worst. It was left to BPiets to get our first winner in the eighth when Conquest Hardcandy ($10.40) made him laugh out loud. Controversial finish in the ninth saw the Chad Brown runners squeeze out the opposition but BigRed1 had the Focus Group ($10.10) covered. As usual the last raced produced the longest shot of the day and Jazzy J ($27.60) had NDSC 32 and TimS70 adding up the big numbers.

Day XXX Three quarters of the contest have now elapsed and itâs time for the backmarkers to make a move. Remember the new rule this year - maximum of 12 picks a day so you canât make 39 picks on the last day as we have seen in previous years ! We drew a blank in the first four races on Thursday but Maumeeriverangler and Turffan made up for it in the fifth when Dashing Dan ($23.80) showed the field a clean pair of heels. Joly B and SpiderJohn are becoming expert at picking winners and had another Dream Passage ($6.50) in the seventh. Pony Girl chalked up another one when Shanghai Schwartz ($7.60) toyed with the opposition in the eighth and Cherokee Scot was even happier when he won a five way shake for the handsome grey colt in the racing office. BigRed1 is moving up the leaderboard like a Ferrari and Monte Crista ($10.20) added to his tally in the ninth. As is the custom the last race produced the longest shot yet again as Fixed Point ($27.60) showed he had the Wrightstuff.

Congrats on winning the shake for this colt. It must be a great feeling to be the successful claimant off of a winning effort, especially of a horse capable of winning two races at the Spa.
Shanghai Schwartz ought to look superb with the colors of Hot Scot Racing Stables.

Day XXXI A cracking New York day at the Spa as Travers weekend got into full swing. With the contest heading towards the home stretch it was certainly time to Analyzethisandthat ($11.00) but no one caught the Bluegrass Express ($14.00) and we were swept away by the Sea Foam ($5.60) as things got very Shady Shady Shady ($6.90) in the home Dugout ($8.00) for Colonel Tom ($10.80) and his contestants. It was left to Bitowisdom to Party Like Grandma ($7.90) for the first winner of the day in the seventh as the rest of us failed to cash La Moneda($7.60). Cherokee Scot used the âgot drunk once with the trainerâ angle to good effect again as English Soul ($10.00) handaled the competition in the ninth. We all missed out on a big opportunity as year old Kharafa ($37.40) graduated with honors in the West Point. Finally in the finale which went off at 7.02 pm there was no cause for celebration as Brockmaninoff ($5.70) won like a 9/5 favorite should.

Day XXXII Almost 50,000 patrons showed up at Saratoga on a beautiful sunny Travers Day , me being one of them after parachuting in at the last minute. Having consumed copious amounts of beer over the weekend and looking at the enormous amount of selections I regret to advise you that this will be a very short recap . Big news of the day was Badactor breaking away in the lead after Whitmore ($19.60) took the Forego. Turffan had started the dayâs proceedings on the right note with Classy John ($26.40) putting him into the top ten. Glorious Empire ($33.40) proved that Hezethebest in the Sword Dancer despite being lumbered with the burden of being one of Larryâs Picks. Salestopper was elated when Abel Tasman ($3.50) barged his way to victory in the Personal Ensign. JolyB has not been jerkin around and had more Promises Fulfilled ($4.50) in the sixth. Grommet and the Bobtailnag sounds like a fairy tale story but they both had a happy ending when Catholic Boy ($16.20) triumphed in the Travers. Finally Chazaward and Quick Call closed out proceedings on a high note with Spring on Curlin ($17.00) in the finale.

Classic stuff as usual, Bev and speaking of "class" kudos to you as I saw you congratulate the jockey after my top pick beat your CANTWEALLGETALONG in the shadow of the wire in the 1st on Sunday! That was a nice touch.
As for copious amounts of beer being consumed over the weekend, myself and the rest of the condo crew resemble that remark as we toyed with the thought of making a movie. "Hangover IV"! LOL.

Day XXXIII Post Travers Sunday at Saratoga always has a bit of a hangover feel to it and it certainly was not ideal for Hot Scot Racing Stable to have a runner in the first race ! BertConvy however had the right idea in selecting the other Gary Contessa horse as Hokulea ($18.20) proved to be the brightest star of his two entries when pipping Cantweallgetalong on the line. Not much else to report on the day although TurfeyeJoe got an unexpected Holiday Bonus ($10.80) after Dr Edgar was disbarred in the sixth.

Day XXXIV Another Racing week is in the books and if you want to win this contest you better talk now as we head into the final 6 days. The opener may have been Just Right ($7.40) for Todd Pletcher but it was a big red zinger for all of our group . However the Florida pairing of SalesTopper and JohnnyBatTBD were able to form a Winter Union ($14.60) in the second to get us off the mats. Jose Ortiz quickly doubled up in the third with SuperCommittee ($3.80) while for once it was SalesTopper who was causing the Celtic Chaos ($5.30) in the fourth. Irad Ortiz decided to get into the action as Cloontia ($14.00 ) took the fifth but none of us were sharp enough to use Stolen Pistol ($14.60) in the sixth. Joly B was worried that they would not let Riff Raff into the winners circle in the seventh and he was right as you had to be wearing a Blue Belt ($103.50) to get in. Roseâs Vision ($12.40) gave Jose Ortiz a treble in the eighth and Mrs Ortiz surely felt a Surge of Pride ($9.40) just like Ozzy and Beetlebomb when Irad won the last to make it five on the day for the dynamic duo.

Day XXXV Time is running out for most of us to make inroads in the contest although it is certainly not all black and white yet at the top of the leaderboard as Badactor tries to hang on with the wire rapidly approaching. Itâs bombs away for most of us now so a 3-5 shot like Dark Gemini ($3.50) attracted no takers. Roses are red but Rick Violette was not blue after Twofer ($14.50) went flying pleasantly to take the second. GAM is now right behind our leader after getting into a Bit of Mischief ($18.20) with Ozzy and JohnnyBatTBD in the third. Here comes your man Chad Brown again in the fourth dealing another 1-2 knockout blow to longshot backers and it did not take much Prognostication ($2.70) to see that coming. JohnnyBatTBD was in a mischievous mood Wednesday and he got into More Mischief ($6.60) in the fifth but this time with Joly B as his accomplice in crime. Offlee Irish was a longshot selection in the sixth but he was offlee slow and did not trouble our Tres Charmant ($9.40) winner. Fair Regis ($4.30) was literally bustin stones in the stretch and almost knocked his rival Out Of Orbit in the seventh but after a lengthy stewards inquiry no change was announced which was not a giant surprise. In the eighth The Caretaker ($10.00) was a popular choice and it was no sudden surprise when he took care of business for Trapshot, Eye 123 and the Italian Stallion. We always look forward to the two year stakes races at Saratoga with anticipation but only TurfeyeJoe had a joyful heart after Opry ($9.80) won the feature in grand old style. In the nightcap we had almost every horse covered but on the advice of local counsel it was Ziggyâs high conviction pick of Whiskey Run ($15.20) that had the rest of us over a barrel.

Day XXXVI After an overnight downpour we had some races off the turf again which has become a Timely Tradition ($6.60) for this meet unfortunately . Indeed many of us are near the End of Spirits ($10.20) as we could not even fire Mattyâs Magnum ($5.30) today. As Stoney Bennett ($3.50) once sung itâs almost time to Bid You Adieu ($13.60). Indeed had Salestopper not hit with Poshsky ($16.20) in the sixth our group would have had its first whiteout of the contest. Some may say it was just Poppyâs Destiny ($13.40) but surely there was a cold Stonefactor ($7.50) why we all did so badly today !

Day XXXVII We are now well into the stretch and the final Friday of the meet started with the customary Chad Brown double of Chicletâs Dream ($2.90) and Apartfromthecrowd($3.90) but there were no takers of these short price favorites from our crowd. One More Tom ($13.60) is what you often see on the contest board but surprisingly no one went there or to the Candy Store ($19.80). Turffan got us off the mark in the fifth when Stellar Agent ($29.40) concocted a special abreu. Scarf It Down ($6.40) on your Big Birthday ($8.10) had no fans but Large Mac and SalesTopper did come up with a Special Relativity ($13.20)in the eighth. SalesTopper (aka The Goddess) đ quickly doubled up with Extravagant Kid ($11.00) in the ninth while Elk salvaged a pretty miserable day for him when Timeless Beauty claimed the finale. ($5.00)

Day XXXVIII We are on the final countdown to both the meet and a very exciting contest and our group had a trainload of picks today but surprisingly we did not see Signalman ($10.40) who I guess must have given his sire General Quarters his first ever winner at Saratoga in the opener. The grey gelding Dowseâs Beach ($6.50) was well serviced to get the dubbya for Irad Ortiz in the second as natural order was restored with another favorite winning. Our first winner of the day was when Consensus Thinking ($44.80) derailed the Chad Brown Express in the third much to the delight of the Bobtailnag who is now in third place with one pick still left. In the fourth race Quick Call made the right call with Holiday Stone ($17.60) who won without breaking the rules although there was a stewards inquiry. In the fifth our group gave a collective uncle sigh when Weather Wiz ($8.70) prevailed. Javier Castellano was on fire today and Spirit Animal ($7.20) was one of his four winners in the sixth. In the seventh Trapshot and JohnnyBatTBD decided to have Uno Mas Modelo ($8.70) But something much stronger was needed after the eighth when 25-1 shot Final Frontier was taken down much to the disgust of Hooper, SammytheSage and the aforementioned JohnnyBatTBD. There was nothing the motta with the victory of Raging Bull ($6.50) in the ninth which was welcomed by Trapshot and SpiderJohn. In the Spinaway Cherokee Scot gave himself the slimmest chance of regaining the title when Sippican Harbor ($34.00) sailed home. Joel Rosario made it three stakes races in a row when Yoshida ($14.40) came out of the setting sun to take the Woodward and make Turffanâs day a lot brighter. In the finale Lady Montdore ($10.40) managed to beat three Chad Brown runners which reduced his percentage but increased those of Hooper QuickCall and Bitowisdom. Just two days to go and Badactor leads GAM by a mere $3.20 with both contestants having two picks remaining. However itâs still possible for one of the chasing pack to show some enterprise and boldly go where no man has gone before as Badactor tries to Klingon to his slender advantage. Watch this space, our trek is almost over !

IDay XXXIX And now the end is near and as we await the final curtain Iâm sure we all have a few regrets about picks that we did not make but thatâs life and to be frank although we all started with high hopes tomorrow we will find out who had a very good year. Ruler of the Nile ($7.60). cost a million bucks as a 2yo but you could have got him for $16k today in the opener as Pletcher and Brown continue to clean out the expensive flops from their barns. Rhythm with Soul ($11.80) continued Joel Rosarioâs nice weekend and our Ponygirl was along for the ride in the second. Whisper it but we may have seen a budding star today when the regally bred Graceful Princess ($9.70) nicked the fourth . Discreet Image ($28.60) helped Nick Vito into the top ten and gave Hooper some payback from yesterdayâs debacle and he quickly followed up with Take Me To Hardoon ($5.90) who was also on the sheets of Madame Blum and Propro. Take Charge Mirella ($5.10) showed that sheâs got it all when taking charge in the seventh. None of us went double deep on Year of the Kitten ($10.40) who Iâm sure was a day maker for somebody other than mike. Mighty Scarlett ($3.50) led another Chad Brown 1-2 for a multiple group of owners. I just hope the punters donât get bored by this continuing scenario . The dream team of Bob Baffert and Mike Smith combined to win the Prioress with Dream Tree ($5.80) while Joly B put himself in with a chance of taking the title after landing the late double with Excellent Sunset ($6.50) and Sycamore Lane ($8.60) who peeled the Onion in the finale.

Day XL The final day of the contest had extra large significance in every way. Fly Away Birdie ($8.30) took the opener for BPiets and BertConvey but the big news at the top of the table was that Turffan used up his second last pick and it was still a case of Badactor saying Catch Me If You Can. Propro went five deep in the second but still managed to miss McErin $(4.00) who scored for the consistent SpiderJohn but did not impact the leaderboard significantly.Hats off to the noble Gam . He could have won the contest had he gone with an odds on shot like Complexity ($3.70) in the third but instead tried to win with pride in the fourth but unfortunately this did not prove to be a Dominant Stategy ($8.00)and instead he lost with honor.  In the fifth The Bobtailnag needed Honey Donât but she didnât and Badactor dodged another bullet. In the sixth Princess. Carolina ($15.00) was a popular choice and helped the slim hopes of Arsignman, Beetlebomb, Hooper and Ozzy. No one had the presence of mind to select Sicilian Mike ($21.20) in the seventh and Turffanâs great chance to win the contest ended in the eighth when the Dow suffered a meltdown although his defeat wont be missed by Badactor who has now seen his three major contenders fall by the wayside. Hooper and Chazaward , both with long shot picks left, decided to make Badactor sweat a bit when Qurbaan ($28.00) forged ahead in the ninth. Mind Control ($22.20) was mucho the best in the Hopeful and may have a derby date next year after this convincing win. Lots of long shots were selected in the last but Sunshine Gal was not one of them so itâs hats off to Badactor who becomes the first dual winner of the contest. Thanks for playing and see you next year ! .
