Rispoli is a really good jockey. It is his first Derby, but has he ridden at CD before?I don't recall that he has. I really really liked him to pilot RYW. Rispoli has won Group 1 races in many other countries. He's no slouch and he and RYW fit perfectly. Guess we'll see but sometimes bring in the big money rider isn't the right answer. It's not how many races they win so much as rider+horse "fit". It was like if you took Calvin Borel off Mine That Bird. Those 2 were the perfect team. THat's how I feel about Rispoli and RYW. Why change up perfection??? Not to mention every time Rosario gets on one of my horses they lose. I know his successes..... he just doesn't float my boat. Let's hope Joel gives a better ride than he did on Rushie :sarcasm: I used to feel that way about Pat Day and could never get him right. Bet him and he lost, bet against him and he won, towards the end of my hate affair with Pat, I just didn't bet the race he was in ....and of course he won - HA! Umberto is talented and I feel for him losing the mount. He gave RYW a nice ride in the SA Derby. That said, I can't fault the move to Rosario at all and he's riding lights out. Also, he did ride RYW his first time out, so it's not totally out of the blue. Forego

It may come as a surprise to many that Tyler Gaffalione was fourth in jockey earnings in 2020 behind Irad Ortiz, Joel Rosario and Luis Saez.
Still only 26 he already has a Triple Crown win under his belt with War of Will in the Preakness for Mark Casse in 2019.

Marcelino Pedroza. I found this interview enjoyable. His uncle is Martin Pedroza.

Some jockeys can handle the calvary charge in a 20 horse field of the Kentucky Derby. 2 jockeys that I normally like, bet on and respect are JJ Castellano and Julien Leparoux. Both have won big races, won riding titles and even won Breeders Cup races. That said, and for reasons I don't understand, neither one seems to do well in the Derby. Neither one has won this race. This is a great concern to me as I have in my preliminary list of horses, Highly Motivated and Helium in with another 8, (will narrow the list after the draw). As they say in every other line in Starwars movies, 'I've got a bad feeling about this' Any thoughts?

Interesting, I didn't know Tyler was ranked that high for earnings this past year. I am a little bit surprised he was ranked that high in earnings. I really like him on both dirt and turf and he is very adept at putting his horses where they need to be (especially on the turf) to have a shot at hitting the wire first. On rare occasions, I've seen him get into a wrestling match with his mount trying to get them to relax off the pace and not always being successful at it. Betting him second time back on those kind of mounts have been very good for me. Forego

Four time Eclipse Award winner Javier Castellano’s star is certainly on the wane after being the top jockey for the bulk of the 2010’s. Tough to believe he’s never won a Kentucky Derby since he has been successful in the Travers six times. No doubt he will be highly motivated to get that monkey off his back this year as opportunities to ride the big horses going forward are not going to get any easier. Leparoux will always be known for his turf expertise and in his biggest Derby opportunity to date in 2012 he was heavily criticized for his ride on the well fancied Union Rags and subsequently missed out on winning the Belmont that year when the connections switched to John Velazquez.

So looks like Rispoli is not the only jockey being replaced. "Pletcher, who won the Derby in 2010 with Super Saver and 2017 with Always Dreaming, has riders lined up for all but Sainthood. “We will wait until after the final breezes and monitor who is available,” Pletcher said." One of my top horses, wondering what Badactor thinks about this. I loved the Corrales/Sainthood duo.

I have never NOT had a jockey... a week out from the race.

ICYMI Corey Lanerie is on Sainthood After googling ICYMI... lol (tyvm), I found this:
Corey James Lanerie is a jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing.
Based in Kentucky, he has been the leading rider at Churchill Downs,
having won the most races during a race meet, 10 times.
He has also been named the leading rider at Ellis Park, Lone Star Park, Sam Houston Race Park and Retama Park.
Corey Lanerie was my jockey on Lookin At Lee. This is good... I'm feelin' good about this.

Corey has in some ways become the heir to Calvin Borel at CD, though I think he is overall much better than Calvin in his prime. Notably he is known for riding that CD rail whenever it is the least bit practical to do so.

Corrales is a jockey nobody talks about and I am glad you brought him up. One of W. Wards guys he goes to when the big boys are not in town. I will say this to be devil's advocate, but I went back and watched this race as Corrales and connections claimed foul and it was disallowed and the reason it was disallowed because do you not think that Corrales gave the horse a questionable ride at best. He has a good post position, I know he has some early speed but he got out in clubhouse turn and then tucked down to the rail to save his ground...correct. That is smart, very Johnny V. like and be patient, however, did Corrales forget what he was racing against. A jockey should have a reasonable idea of what he is up against, who is really late closer type, who might quit on the lead. Corrales reacted too late 1/2 way through the far turn. Hockey Dad, etc. all made those moves from the outside 4-5 horses wide, so now he decides to move once those horses made their move. If this horse had so much my friend, he had him in the rail position, he should have tipped out earlier, he had a ton of horse. He caused his own problems in the stretch, that being Corrales. Once he straightens out in the stretch, Like the King had already establish his line to make his run pass the horses that were going to be finished at the 1/16 pole. So, ya great run, the horse reengaged, with an extra kick. If it was strategy on Pletchers part. He took too long to get this horse to start running, he could have cleared earlier if he had that much run in him and cruised home, instead, it looks like a great late kick, no.. looks like a bad ride. I will not take anything against the horse, my guess Pletcher uses him upfront with the rest of the speed and dies out and here come the closers. Bet him all you want. How many horses from the Turfway and the Spiral have won the Kentucky Derby. Animal Kingdom...sloppy track. and Lil E Tee. Good luck with that. Spiral/Ruby/Lanes End gave us Animal Kingdom, Oscar Nominated, Went the Day Well, Lil E Tee, Hard Spun and Flower Alley (sire of I'll Have Another). Not all winners, but I'm sure Oscar and WTDW messed up a few superfectas.

Well you certainly were right on about Castellano Cindylou... he made a serious left hand turn out of the gate nearly dumping RYW as he dove to the inside to establish position before they hit the first turn. Pretty ugly.
