About 3 years ago my wife got me an inexpensive Crosley turntable and I began playing LPs again for the first time since? (the early 1980's?). I found that I had really missed the whole feel of taking out a record, looking at the front and back cover, setting the stylus down and watching that beautiful spinning of the disc on the platter.
Once I determined that this wasn't purely nostalgic for me, two weeks ago I upgraded to a Fluance turntable and now I am getting so much pleasure from some of my old records and a few replacements and new ones that I have purchased. Any other dinosaurs out there who have found themselves on this path?
If so, are there any specific LPS that you think are really well presented on vinyl?
So far the best thing has been Miles Davis's Kind of Blue which dates back to 1959 and includes Julian Adderly, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, and Bill Evans on the session. Sitting on the sofa with my wife and enjoying a drink late on a Friday night, it sounded so good that it felt like we were in a club listening to it.

Still using an old Denon DP turntable. About ready for a tune up, fortunately there is a guy in town that been working on old turntables for 40 years. You looking for a reissue list or original?

Hey shoes, I recently dug a box of old vinyl out. Old 78's from the 40's through the 50's. Belonged to an uncle of mine who passed in the early 80's. Never heard of the majority of the performers or songs but if you're looking for anything you can post here and I'll see if I have it. Lots of gospel and country (explains why I never heard of most).

You looking for a reissue list or original? hoop-Denon made/makes a great turntable, with that tune-up it will likely outperform many, some even fairly pricey, new turntables, on the market today. As for LPs, I am open to originals and re-issues both, though cost is relevant. I've been paying between about $18 on the low end and $35 on the high end. Also I'm looking at LP cleaning systems which can range in price from $40-50 up to the thousands (I'm not going there). I have the brush which picks up dust particles and eliminates static electricity (about $12-15) but I'm told a good cleaning can really restore old records.

Spanky, thanks for the offer, but my new turntable won't play 78s (only 33s and 45s).

I have collected vinyl since the mid-60s. Largely lps--few 45s. Turntables--started with Garrard--moved to B&O classic 4002--Technics direct drive(highly recommended)--25 years ago went to VPI--ready to upgrade again. Serious collection---all alphabetized and spread sheeted. All genres I recommend looking for original label first pressings, promo lps, and particularly mono pressings for anything pre-early 70s. I stress mono---especially early Beatles/Stones/Who/Kinks/ Learn to read the runout groove etchings and type to determine early pressings.Look for 1A/1A or close. Stay away from later pressing re-issues. Today's re-masters are a mixed bag. Certain labels do it much better than others. A lot of the 45rpm remasters are outstanding though can be pricey. If I go to Kee next week, I could bring you some of my extra copies--I need to thin it down

I have read that in the 1970s, coincident with the oil crisis that the quality of vinyl really went down. And that with the more recent re-issues, as you say, it is a mixed bag. Would be great to see you if you do come to Lexington. We're staying at the same Homewood suites on Ruccio Way, that we ran into you on a previous trip. Wish we were going this week instead of next week as the weather (and racing) is a bit better. Still I am excited just to be on track again at Keeneland with all of the sights and smells and sounds of live racing. My first turntable was also a Garrard- with a magnetic Sure cartridge which though it was pretty modestly priced was still a step up from the ceramic cartridges which were much in use then. So far I'm quite pleased with the Fluance RT85 (with an Ortofon blue cartridge/stylus). The mono comment makes sense. I have read that the Beatles paid far more attention to the mono pressings and then left the studio and trusted the engineers to handle the stereo pressings.

Sorry not to make it down there, shoes...... nice week to be there. Caught up in a Homecare breakdown for an elderly parent. If you are going home up 75, I don’t live far off of it. If you would like to stop by and see what I have, I can fix you up with some extra copies of good stuff.... Should be around all weekend
