Began screening last night.
Watched Hamilton...an hour into the movie, I had pretty much had enough. I get it. It's innovative. Rap on Broadway. Clever. Redundant. Meh.
NOMADLAND is a beautiful film. Highly recommended!

That'll be the next one I screen...
I watched the new Borat film tonight. It was funnier the first time. Amusing. Irreverent, but a little tedious now.
Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory whores it up @ 30,000 ft. in The Flight Attendant. I'm out of it. Is this how modern women behave? Rampant drunkenness and one night stands. A girl really ought to ask fella's name before she screws him... call me "old fashioned."

Glenn Close turns in a masterful performance as the grandma in Hillbilly Elegy. Amy Adams is powerful as she struggles with addiction and mental illness. Perhaps, the best performance in the film is by the actress who plays the sister, Haley Bennett. A subtle and beautifully crafted and layered performance. Terrific. Every character in the film is broken.
Ron Howard certainly knows how to shoot a beautiful film, however, I never really cared about these characters. Especially the lead... the son, the character through whose eyes we experience the film. Gabriel Basso's performance failed to move me.
There is just nothing to root for about any of these ignorant people. Family violence. Drug and alcohol addiction. It's very sad. The violence between family members was physically upsetting to me. Book was a huge success.. film was just OK.
The cure for Hillbilly allergy is EDUCATION.

Wonderful quirky characters. Excellent cast. Funny. This one is a winner! Glad you are enjoying it, Dell. I agree with everything you wrote. I guess my endorsement was too low key. Just wanted people to know about it and come to their own conclusion. I have 1 or 2 episodes left to watch. The other thing that I thought was well done was the use of music. I discovered this great song in one of the later episodes...

And as is true with any great comedy, we root for characters we care about. Then, once we love the characters, it's time to pull on the heartstrings. I'm at the halfway point in the season. Each episode has been better than the last.
Highest recommendation!

It wasn't until the 1950s that actors began to mumble and scratch and emote, taking time and pause before and after speaking lines of dialogue. Before that... actors worked for the studios. They were property. They were trained to sing and dance and act and enunciate... actresses always had excellent posture because they took classes and were groomed to perform in the acting style of the day. Dialogue was quick and clever and paced quite differently from film scripts today.
The TV show Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis captured the style better than anything in the last 30 years.
I was excited to see Mank because it's shot in black and white and I have an affinity for film noir. Being familiar with the background story of the making of Citizen Kane really helped. I'm not sure anyone who is unfamiliar with the story would be able to follow this film at all. Many, many wonderful inside references... especially satisfying if you get it. Otherwise, likely confusing for today's audience.
Gary Oldman is a great actor. Full Stop. He embodies a character like few others do. He's wrapped in the time period and his acting absolutely captures the period, while still being rooted in honest, yet stylized reality. Amanda Seyfried's performance is also spot on. Arlis Howard as Louis b Mayer is brilliant.
Most of the other actors seem a bit too modern. Out of place, in manner and movement, posture, pace and style.
The look of the film was also troubling to me. It's too crisp. There is a warmth and a depth and a texture to those old black and white films that is missing in Mank. I was pretty sure as I was watching, that this production was not shot on film. It bugged me enough to look it up and sure as sure can be the movie is shot with a new video technique which truly loses something in the translation. By comparison, the look of this film vs. Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein is an excellent example of what I mean.
Mank is a good, but not great movie.

... The Trial of the Chicago 7 is an important film and everyone should see it! The historical themes are absolutely relevant to today. Smart script. Brilliantly paced. Excellent direction by Aaron Sorkin. Great acting across the board, especially Sasha Baron Cohen and the amazing Frank Longella. The best performance in the film is given by the attorney for the Chicago 7, played by Mark Rylance.
It is a question as simple as the difference between right and wrong. Right and wrong! Mank also touched on this theme, exposing the filthy dirty tricks of the Republican party, as they smeared Sinclair Lewis in California, who in a strange bit of casting is played by Bill Nye the Science Guy.
It's been going on for far too long.. S***, they're even worshiping a golden idol these days. An actual Golden idol. And these are Christians? Too ignorant to see the irony. Pathetic.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is terrific. Seeing it may help break the spell of the cult which currently pollutes the Republican party. Art holding up a mirror to life and thus revealing important truths. Change. It's been a long time coming. But it's here now.

Hillbilly Elegy was the only listed film that I watched. Today’s film making rarely moves me. Too much to wade through to find something appealing. Carries over to Netflix and prime.
I watched Elegy because it was based here, on a street directly across from one of my business locations. I knew the family, mainly JD and his grandmother. JD worked for me—I hired him for his first job, also one of his friends. He was a good level-headed smart young man, and we got along well. Low maintenance person. I bought him a lot of lunches, and wish that I had known about the family issues. I could make a difference in that neighborhood back then. He mentions my business in the book, and gives it a positive spin. We remain friends—I see him occasionally and have high hopes that he becomes a political force. I will have his back and will support financially.
Most of you obviously don’t understand the Midwestern/Appalachian factory worker family mindset. Hard-working shift work family units, who are close-nit, honest, proud, both respectful and appreciating mutual respect. They pay their way( with occasional “ neighborly” help), respect authority yet don’t want govt help or interference/regulation. We built a very successful long-running corporation based on serving particularly this segment of our community + minorities. When you show them equal respect and make them honestly welcome, they are unconditionally and mutually loyal. It was a rewarding relationship, and in the long run, more rewarding mentally. We still support and interact with those areas today. Both glad and fortunate to be able to do so.
I agree that glen close was very good. She nailed the character, considering that she never knew Bonnie Vance.I thought that whomever played the mother was very good also. Same with the sister. Surprised that the grandfather wasn’t more prominent. He was very important in the family also.
I also agree that JD wasn’t portrayed as well. He was a much more “with it” young man.
Still don’t understand why you have to drag your one-sided political thinking in to this. Why do you make rules and promises that you have no intention of honoring? Your viewpoints here don’t offer anything other than partisanship and an assumed entitleship imo.

Some things and people refuse to change...... Thank you for the excellent response, Spiderjohn! I appreciate your posting. The themes are political
and therefore, I addressed the issues presented in the films.
No problem here standing by the "reviews" and opinions I share.
Commendable that you were in a position to help your community.Change. It's been a long time coming. But it's here now.

Fell asleep after an hour of Nomadland - highly recommended - for insomniacs. I plan to watch this at some point so the definitive thumbs up or down will have to wait until I get to it. My apologies for the delay. Hopefully, you will all find suitable amusements to keep yourselves occupied until I am ready to provide a terminal assessment. Stay tuned.

On reflection I may have been too harsh in my critique of Nomadland. If you enjoy watching people take a shit or do the laundry then this is the movie for you . 🍿

Documentary-esque in style... It is clunky and slow. I think that's the point, though. Got to admit, the movie is unlike any we've ever seen.
Dell.

News of the World... Tom Hanks. Horses. History. Much to like. Straightforward, good looking Hollywood movie.
It's the little things... Solid Denzel Washington performance in a solid Denzel Washington movie. Creepy. It's a creepy movie. Twisted. Uneven performances by some major players, ranging from overarched to weirdly spell binding.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a beautiful entertaining wonderful and deeply moving film. Exceptional acting throughout this powerful cast.

The Father
If there is an actor in this world better than Anthony Hopkins... I don't know who it might be. Exquisite.

Hannibal the Animal! Great performance in Westworld as well. I watched the original the other night on TMC. It was ok, with Peter Fonda and Richard Benjamin. Yul Brenner as The Gunslinger.
