Dell, I'd like to know the odds of buying three boxes out of a hundred...and having them "all" side by side

Dell, I'd like to know the odds of buying three boxes out of a hundred...and having them "all" side by side Download Attachmentif it was a single row of 100 squares i think it would be 1/100 * 1/99 * 1/98 = 0.0001% given that it is a 10*10 matrix i suspect the odds may be different...maybe others may know better than I. let's just say that dell has already beaten the odds given his square assignment so he really doesn't need to win this

TC is correct that different boxes have very different chances of success. The 0-0 box seems the best. My draw of 1-2 is very weak.
This link may help explain:
Luck to all and enjoy.

Always wanted to see someone do an analysis of this in detail. Thanks JolyB! TW

Wild finish to the half where about five players had a chance of taking down the halftime money. Tim pulled it out. Tom got first quarter, beating out....Colleen....someone's sleeping on the couch tonight lol!.....

Congrats to Tom & Tim. Especially Tom for taking down 3 of the 4 prizes. Tampa Tom has nothing on UIC's Tom. GOAT Just goes to show you never know what will happen...according to the Washington Post article posted by JolyB the 1-9 combo that got Tom the big prize returns 8 cents on the dollar. I'd say you got a little more than that. Also, a big thanks to all involved in putting this together. Made the game more enjoyable. Let's do it again next year.

Thanks to all the participants, and to eye123 for pulling it together. I feel almost guilty winning three out of four periods, but randomness is a strange beast. Rest assured that, rather than buying a flash car with the bounty, I'll be funding future UIC contests, so you'll have chances to get it back. Tim, I sent your winnings by PayPal this morning.

Spend some of that bounty on a Brady jersey for the better half. Valentine's Day. It will be memorable at least.

After winning close to $1000 of our money I think we need to give him a new nickname. How about "Weasel".

If you were following, the funny part was at times...even if the other team scored....the money stayed in the family. Must have a garage full of rabbit feet ! and yes....good game.(I'm just glad Tim got the halftime money)

Bobtail, I had $42 in, got $550 out, so netted $508. I don't think that qualifies for full "weasel" status, more like "rat-bastard".
Eye, you may be right about the luck part. In 2017, we were in a $100 per square pool, final score was worth $7500. Had NE 4, ATL 8. That was the year Atlanta was winning 28-9 after three quarters. With the Patriots kicking FGs there was no way we were ever going to get to a 4. Until they started the epic comeback. We realized that if they tied it up and held ATL scoreless, it would go to overtime, and if NE scored a TD, game over, no extra point try. SOB Brady gets two 2-pt conversions, ties the game, James White runs in it for the OT victory. There's no way that should have happened (ask Hooper) with all the events that had to go just right, but it did. $7500 on a 7-cushion bank shot! We yelled a bit...

Which really makes this fun...random as heck, and everyone has the same shot to win. Like the bada, bada, bada with three boxes next to each other and you taking down three of the prizes....all luck of the draw. We will do this again next year, with two "twists" which should add a "little' extra to the game.
