I didn't know the player can pick up the ball before an official arrives at the spot where the ball lands. What's to stop the player from pushing the ball down while the ball is completely out of sight?

What's to stop the player from pushing the ball down while the ball is completely out of sight? Nothing. Reed took advantage of his young playing partners (25 and 24) and the rules official. Don't think he would have tried it if the retiring Slugger White or Mark Russell were deciding.

Reed is not new to cheating of course. Born in San Antonio. Nick Faldo had some not nice things to say about Reed. I've always liked Sir Nick. Ryan played great and got close. Not bad for a 43 year old!

Pro golf is a strange job. A bunch of independent contractors doing their own thing, and it's not like you really have a coach, teammates, or referees to keep you accountable. Integrity is just assumed, enforced by rules, a bunch of cameras and even a few interested fans. The penalty for cheating is that you will be forever mocked by fans (who would have called out his latest BS), ostracized by tour members, and maybe dropped by sponsors. I just don't think this guy cares, maybe he is fueled by it, and he makes big checks. If he wants to play the villain, and get paid, who's gonna stop him?
1. Fans at the tournaments? Yeah, they'll be looking out for transgressions. The audio should be...... interesting. 2. Playing partners? No, I doubt it. They have another focus and their isn't leadership on tour like other sports. 3. The tour itself? I still doubt it. I think there is inherent trust in the players to do the right thing. The system is not designed to catch cheaters.

Checked in to see if there was a thread about this incident, figured there would be. The discussion at the start of the telecast yesterday was interesting where pretty much all the commentators thought Reed abused the situation, in the least. Clearly that ball was not "embedded." I didn't know the rules allow you to pick up the ball to make that determination. In my own experience, it was always obvious when a ball embedded. I imagine if I was him, I would've called in a rules official first, before picking up the ball.

When I watched this it was "who's making the ruling....he pretty much laid out a scenario leading the official along to a conclusion. The hovering over the ball, then removing it(can't see what he's doing there) is questionable at least, coupled with past history shady at best. Like everyone, why not call the official first ? (He called immediately after picking up and placing it (the ball) down.I see only one reason for that...advantage.

It looked like he was pushing his fingers into the grass when he was "hovering" and that was probably when he pushed the ball into the dirt. The ball bounced about a foot so there was no way it landed a second time hard enough to embed it.

i thought the only time one might be permitted to pick up a ball would be to determine if it was theirs, if their mark was obstructed.

I think that Matt Kutcher is the polar opposite of Reed. He's never won a green jacket as Reed has but think to be one of, if not the most liked golfer on tour has to count for something. I've been told Reed's behavior goes back to his college days. Maybe he's just a jerk.

For an obvious violation of "Gentlemen's Rules", this player is disinvited and forever banned from playing in the UpInClass OPEN.

I STAND CORRECTED1 Thanks for pointing that out Bev. I feel duped! It makes me happy to know I can play loose with the facts because Mr, Hendry is monitoring my every comment/mistake! Kucher, I'm done with you! A certain ex-somebody can not find an attorney to represent him in an upcoming thingy. Oh, the irony...
