Make no mistake, we are witnessing an attempted coo. To answer you're question Hoop...It starts with a T and ends with a P. I respect Dell's wishes to not get political but this has to an exception. Joe NO POLITICS is speaking now and if he can overcome a pandemic, a battered economy, and NO POLITICS burning down the capital on his way out...well, he has a shot at being known as a GREAT President. The world is watching.

I left this forum knowing that I could not stay silent, when Dell eliminated any political discussion.(respecting forum policy and the members) Know that we will learn from this, we will move forward. Trust that in the end, the Constitution will always guide us in the end.

still the same old spider. what a surprise! These type of words are what cause the arguments .... starts the wars..... If someone wants to express an opinion they have that right.... whether you agree or disagree is yours.... There was a time when a differences could be discussed and not cause hate between the people who were discussing it but that no longer appears to be the way.... The First Amendment text reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Really look at what is going on in the world....there are so many things not as they used to be... and we are just expected to adapt.... I totally agree with Hooper...

Over the past 60+ years, it is not just the political landscape that has changed, but how people treat one another has changed as well. At one time you could express a view or an opinion and not be chastised for it. During that period you may not agree with the individual, but you still respected that person.
Now, with technological advancements an individual can express views faster and reach more people. People can now filter information that they want to see, hear or read and omit opposing views.
Over the past sixty years we have made great advancements - placing a man on the moon, finding cures for medical conditions, and making life easier for all. We have developed the tools we use, now we need to develop as people while finding peaceful solutions and helping those in need.
It may sound like I am proposing a utopia, but isn't that what we should strive for as people?

Hoop your point is well taken and spot on.... a disgraceful display incited and cajoled by a very sick, paranoid and desperate man
Spider - seriously you’re going to pick on Spanky for a misspelling.? That’s very telling as to whom and what your are. My Grandmother taught me at an early age to never argue with an ignorant person because if you do you’re just as ignorant. This is why I’ve never engaged you. However you’ve continually exhibited that you’re cut from the same cloth as Herr NO POLITICS . I expect your usual acerbic diatribe because that’s the way you roll. DO NOT expect me to respond to any of the vitriol you send my way. I suggest you look in the mirror and try to find yourself behind that shadow of YOUR president.....just sayin’

Wtf? I have a long-running friendship with spanky, and we discuss politics personally without name calling or anger I don’t start political threads I try my best to be issue related with my opinions—and don’t personally demean others regardless of our philosophical/political differences I don’t know anything about big daddy and most others posting here They honestly don’t know much about me If you are going to mention a grandmother’s advice, it would seem that the intent would be to follow that advice, assuming that you refer to me as “ignorant”.
This thread was originally not about me—I made no references to me
This was a very cool racing site when I joined a long while ago I have always been active in the racing contests and handicapping/breeding threads. I have owned, raced, bred and sold runners since the early 90s. Odd that old voices now return to go political instead of horse racing related. Why?
There is now far less racing content here now, and the sports wagering content has decreased.
The political topics were banned, yet many(including our thought police stewards) continue to start them.
The site has become a twilight zone episode about everything that it grandstands against imo.
Sad

In my view hoop's heartfelt comment was perfectly fine (and also a sentiment that I agree with incidentally). While he may have a different point of view on some issues than I do and one might guess at what he was meaning between the lines, based on assumptions, there was nothing that denigrated anyone. In addition based upon years of reading hoop's thoughtful posts, I have always found him to be a sincere and honest man.
Spanky took it to a whole different level which seemed designed primarily to provoke and was overtly political. This is what we have been trying to avoid and what has threatened to destroy a wonderful forum. Spider's response was just that, a response to Spanky's post with a different point of view. These things can and have escalated quickly and I would again ask that we refrain from this in the future. I have many views on political issues but I don't assume anyone here wants to hear them (if you do contact me offline), and this is not the place.

Shoes, you said "Spider's response was just that, a response to Spanky's post with a different point of view." His point of view was(in his own words)
"Washington has become a cess pool It should be attacked Let the next American revolution begin"
I believe Jim's expression in his post displayed dismay in just that, the assault on the Capital.
Michelle, you quoted tc's post as what the problem is. No mention of Spider's call "let the revolution begin". Not sure what to make of that.
This is my "opinion" (something from the title of the basement removed )

This is somewhat off topic from the op. I offer that there are many media outlets offering themselves as news organizations, when really they're narrative builders whose aim is to fuel two emotions, outrage and fear.
On the new extremes you have one america news and MSNBC. With CNN and fox it's not as bad. They'll omit stories that don't fit their opinion hosts ways of thinking, but for the most part, during their non opinion oriented shows, they report the news. That's not great, but has been that way since the 90s at least. The new school outlets just make up stuff, not all of it benign. It takes skill to decipher what's actual and what isn't. Internally Ive found my favorite emotion is phony outrage. Easy to recognize. False fear is more difficult and therefore I don't like it.

Apologies to the forum. My intent yesterday was more inline with Hugh's. It was meant as an observation on the boorish behavior I'm surrounded by on an almost daily basis. I don't need someone giving me the finger because I'm only driving 10 mph over the posted limit,I didn't want to confront the woman in front of me in line that was swearing at the downs syndrome kid who was bagging her groceries or the young lady abusing the handicap family dressing room for 30 minutes while I wait for a chance to help my disabled wife try on some clothing. Yesterday sent me over the edge, but I was ushered close by past senseless riots, killings and even the sad displays by fans of championship winning teams. I felt like someone broke into my home and in some states that would have allowed me to stand my ground and kill them. There is something out of whack and I hope those younger than me can fix it. I started this shit show and again I apologize. Back to horses, music and food.
In friendship, Hoop

Let me just say, I have no problem with anyone on this forum. What I DO hope for...is that nobody leaves UIC because of anything the political climate has created or I have written. In my view, it makes a huge difference if you have met members of UIC in person. At the Breeders Cup at Santa Anita, I was fortunate enough to meet spider, his wife, Large and Small Mac, and Jason Baker. I was fortunate to meet Gooch (Frank) when he came through Amarillo once. My point is that none of us really know how we would treat someone until we met them face to face. Gooch has never returned to UIC as far as I know. Soon enough this country will head in another direction. I'll lean left and spider will lean right. And that's cool. We'll still visit on the phone on occasion. Same with Hoop and I.
The events at the White House will hopefully bring us all together as a country. If not, then hopefully the members here at UIC can move forward on what our dear, late friend Larry LaTour called "The Best Horseracing Site in the country!

I wish I was smarter and more insightful. I can express what I see as a huge problem. I can't offer solutions. Maybe a question.
To me, misinformation is a big problem in the 21st century. Perhaps it always has been. It felt bigger this past decade. I'm of the opinion that factless statements presented as truth to large audiences should have consequences levied against those reciting them.
How do we reconcile the 1st amendment and demand accuracy simultaneously? I wish I knew.

I have known Spider going on up to 20 years now and we've have several dust ups in the old days. That said his statement "Washington has become a cess pool It should be attacked. Let the next American revolution begin", do you really think he seriously meant it? I believe we've all heard someone, at sometime, say something like "I wanna shoot that @#%& sob" How many of you called the police to report that threat? Folks - it's called Hyperbole! Most of us, if not all of us, have used it many time. Lets not use it to start our own new revolution. It was a tough year and WE all pretty much are fed up with both the Dems and the Reps; let's not get fed up with each other.

I don't see any apologies necessary hoop's initial post pretty much speaks for all of us imo Spanky is a long time friend and we are allowed to disagree + make fun of each other My bad for using the word "attack" on the wrong day Uncertainty breeds tension if you give it you need to be able to take it Hopefully we are all allowed to think as we like and express ourselves no one has to read, respond or agree with anything/anyone we dont have to like one another never say "I'm out of here" unless you do it
though I did like pete's two entries(sorry pete! lol) phony outrage
another lesson learned on to the nfl playoffs and saturday racing

Perhaps THIS is the song they should have played on loudspeakers after the maniacs left the White House. Classic. Maybe just shut your eyes and listen while thinking of what our future could hold in this country.
