Can anyone explain bitcoin to me? I think I'm reasonably smart, but after several hours of online research, I still don't understand it. Some have told me that it is good inflation hedge but I can't buy something that I don't understand.

Good response Dell. At least Tulips have an intrinsic value. My Mom's second favorite flower (to roses).

Thought this was a good background intro...nice place to start. Very elementary but a start for future exploration.

Bitcoin commercial (at least how I would sell it):
"Do you work hard to save things called dollars? Do you plan to try trade those dollars for good and services in the future? Have you noticed that your politicians are ALL appealing to voters about how many dollars they can digitally create and send to your bank accounts? If they can just create money, and your money doesn't earn anything, do you really have faith that holding all your savings as dollars is a good idea?"
That's my take on bitcoin. There is demand for your something digital to use for purchases safely and anonymously, there is demand for a currency that can't be debased as easily and could hypothetically hold it's purchasing power, and one of the digital coins (maybe bitcoin) is probably going to gain acceptance as a legal currency (one that you can pay your taxes with).
I don't pretend to know which coin, or when or where that would happen, but it seems possible that being an early adopter here could makes sense, and just as possible that governments could make owning and using the digital coins difficult and the value would disappear. Using energy to "mine" these coins and applying human ingenuity to this task seems an absurd waste of resources to me, but someone could probably make me feel the same way about hoarding digital dollars.
