Thought he had it for sure. I did too. 9yo Mean Bean just nailed him to win his 11th in 40 starts. 30 top 3 finishes and about $270k in earnings. Horses like Mean Bean are why this class is so tough at CT. 20k optional (my runner) or N4L (none that night...and they're usually outclassed if they enter here) or.....n1x in the last 6 months, meaning it's an open allowance race for those that haven't won recently. They're still tough as nails.

Here's a little story about one of my runners. I picked up Breezy Gust for the contest on 1/11 at Parx in an optional $25,000 claimer for those that have never won 3 races. His two previous wins were in a MSW and a PA-bred n1x, so he's loaded with conditions. Danny Velazquez is a very sharp trainer in the Mid-Atlantic region and he took him for 25k in October when he ran first time tag for Kathleen DeMasi, finishing second. So off three months until 1/11, 4 outstanding works coming in and goes off at an astonishing 6-1 and is never in doubt, running an off the charts 90 Beyer to win by 8 lengths going 7 furlongs.
So I'm pretty excited at what I saw and go to the condition book to see what's listed. 2/16 shows a $25,000 starter allowance for n4l. This is a free condition for him to get through without losing an allowance condition, but that starter level often is tougher than the open n1x allowance level. I see yesterday when the races are drawn that it doesn't fill.
Option two is a 6.5f open n1x allowance on 2/17 where his PA-bred allowance win is excluded from conditions and he's eligible. If he runs here and wins, he gets a big paycheck but loses out on that free starter condition. That race was drawn today.....and he didn't enter it.
However....I did get an entry notification for Breezy on 2/17. OC35k/n2x going 5.5f and he's not in for a tag. Out of condition in an n2x instead of being 2/5 in the n1x allowance. The purse is only $1,000 more.
Did my trainer simply make a mistake and drop Breezy in the wrong race? Did he realize that last out 90 Beyer competes well at n2x and liked the 5.5f over the 6.5f? The n2x puts him up against some tougher runners and the other up and coming PA-bred, the grey Knockout Kick for Kathleen DeMasi, who has won 3 straight and ran an 89 Beyer last out. So if Breezy runs, he gets to face an old stable mate.
Maybe he did make a mistake and scratches to wait for the starter to show up in the overnights. Maybe he fires next Wednesday and wins at 6-1 again. I'll be watching. :-)

San Antone takes care of his half of my faux stable's day at Laurel by destroying a group of 3yo 25k claimers in his first and only start for trainer Kenny Cox and earning $22,230. Unfortunately, he was claimed by Claudio A. Gonzalez, the current leading trainer at Laurel. Why is it bad being claimed by the leading trainer? Well, Claudio A and my faux stable runners do not have a solid history together. He claimed Red Razzo early last year and Red only made one more start after that. He claimed the mare Celesse when she won her 2020 debut...aaaaaaaand we never saw her again. Hoping for better luck here. Interested to see if he sits out jail and puts him back in for 25k or whether he goes for the 40k claimer on 3/19 or even the n1x/OC62.5, likely with the tag if he does it on 3/20. Laurel only runs claimers and the n1x for 3yos this early in the year, so his options are limited.
Sheriff's Kid goes for the faux stable in the 6th today. Expecting a good effort, win or lose.

Since we're sharing stories, I take no pleasure in highlighting the other end of the spectrum to ProPro
GG r3 2/13/21
Great Power shipping up to Gg from Sa. 7/5 ml in a six horse field , one of the other runners was entered by the same trainer for the race to fill. Saldana scratches the other horse and the 2nd fav in the ml also scratches, leaving 4 in the race. Great Power goes to post at 1-2 , breaks 4th, finishes 4th of 4 and was never in it.
and he was my first runner in weeks ..........

Sheriff's Kid was sent today going a mile. While he ran the favorite into the ground and off the board, so was he. $1080 for 5th, stable at a solid $65,060 from 8 starters with current stable star Breezy Gust on deck for Wednesday.

My computer keyboard is not responding so I'm posting from the telephone... Swinging Sticks entered Aqueduct race 2 tomorrow. Was the horse claimed last out?
We won our first race of the year even with the jockey losing the whip! Winning trainer was Jorge Abreu. Jockey, McCarthy. Owner, Hidden Lake Farm.
Now trained by Patrick Quick. McCarthy stays. Owner, Paradise Farm Corp.
Private sale, perhaps?
Anyway, we go tomorrow moving up 25k to 50K claimer.
High morning line is 12-1.π΄ We're UPINCLASS.
AQUEDUCT CLOSED DUE TO BAD WEATHER.

Breezy Gust. Wow. Eligible for n1x and blew the doors off an n2x field by 5 lengths in 1:03 1/5 for 5.5f on a track that was pretty dead up until that race. n1x in the next race went 1:16 2/5 for 6.5f, so the fig makers are going to be guessing. Giant efforts on a dead track or did the track suddenly get fast? $34,400 for the win, $99,460 for the stable. Do they come back next month in the same n2x at Parx....or do they find a stake somewhere and ship?
