TC , look on the bright side. None of your horses lost their conditions. They can come back and run up the track again in the same races .

How do you find out if a horse that is entered in an Optional Claiming race, is actually in for the tag?
Thanks.

Jeff , which information source are you using ? If you look at the entries on Equibase it will show on the same line if it is in for a tag . If there is not an amount shown then it is not . For example in the seventh race at Aqueduct today only horses 6,7 and 8 are in for a tag of $40,000. Hope this helps .

Problem with making selections from AOC races is that although the purses are great invariably the best horses are not in for a tag as evidenced by today’s race where none of them hit the board .

Hey Propro , as a three time winner could you maybe give some pointers to first time entrants and TC with the view to making the contest more enjoyable and successful for them . Thanks Absolutely Bev. I'd be glad to help. First off, don't take a lightly raced horse off of a layoff that's running at Charles Town. It's a bad idea. Pick 1 - 1/6, Charles Town race 4, Rush To The Castle, $20,000. Secondly, you do NOT want to use a pick on any horse at Penn National. It's a bad idea. Pick 2 - 1/8, Penn National race 6, Septimius Severus, $25,000. Next, as an extension of number one, don't pick a lightly raced horse off of a layoff that's running at Laurel. It's a bad idea. Pick 3 - 1/8 Laurel race 3, San Antone, $25,000. Lastly, just don't pick a lightly raced horse off of a layoff at any track. It's a bad idea. Pick 4 - 1/11 Parx race 6, Breezy Gust, $25,000. Good luck everyone! :-)

I think Propro’s post was very much tongue in cheek. If you look at the races his horses are running in they all have great purses compared to the claiming value. Septimius Severus earned well over $100k last year and could be a very nice pick up for $25k.

Bev, it absolutely was tongue in cheek. For anyone spending their hard earned cash on a claimer that is lightly raced with conditions available, you're rolling the dice. They're lightly raced for a reason....they've had issues. They might still have issues. If my gelding at ChuckTown tonight doesn't get claimed by a trainer with a big sharp.....stable, I'll know he's got issues that kept people away. Since I don't have any insight on that and it's not my money that's being spent, I'll give it a whirl.
Unless you hit some stakes with your stable early in your contest, it's about longevity and grinding out checks. I had 8 starts total from 3 of my runners in 2020. That could happen again this year with lightly raced horses....or maybe I hit 500k because I get 40 starts. 12 months will tell. :-)
