After Hooper posted above, I had to Wiki the song. Has an interesting background. Seems the version that we mostly are familiar with is a bit of a hodge podge of origins and influences, not fully attributable to any one individual.

Boy this thread brings back memories. My first memory of the song was also The Leaves version. I had a tiny reel to reel tape recorder and recorded it off the radio.
I'm partial to Randy California's take, not surprising since I am a big fan of Spirit. Otis Taylor is pretty good though.
