Jeff (QuickCall) and Jackie (BestBet) are coming over to Backyard Downs so we can try to keep the tradition going. Bloody Marys for brunch, then I’m making Manhattan Clam Chowder (sorry New England purists) and Hattie’s Fried Chicken. Propro hooked us up with our internet/display options, TYVM. We’ll miss the rest of you, Doc we’ll join you next year.

Hopefully we can celebrate a win in France on Saturday to take the sting out of not being there. What is this Manhattan Chowder you speak of?

I remember the first time I ordered Manhattan clam chowder in NY. The name threw me a bit, but I figured, well I guess I"m in NY. When the waiter brought it to me I thought-who dumped tomato soup in the chowder!

I can vouch for Hatties. Damn good fried chicken sandwich. Hatties recipes. www.thenest.com/content/southern-comfort-foodFried Chicken Makes 2-3 servings 1 (2¾- to 3-pound) frying chicken, cut into 8 pieces 1 tablespoon kosher salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic salt Vegetable oil for frying (amount will vary, depending on the frying setup) 3 cups all-purpose flour Directions Step 1: Rinse the chicken in a colander under cold running water and season with the salt, pepper, and garlic salt. Step 2: Heat the oil in your frying setup to 325°F. Step 3: Place the flour in a bowl or shallow dish and dredge the chicken so that it's thoroughly covered. Step 4: Carefully add the chicken to the oil one piece at time, making sure you don't crowd or overflow the pan. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked. Unless you're deep-frying, you will need to turn the chicken from time to time so it cooks evenly on both sides. Step 5: When the chicken is cooked, remove it from the oil and drain on paper towels. Make sure that the internal temperature reads at least 165°F. Repeat until all the chicken is cooked. Step 6: Allow the oil to cool completely before straining and storing.

Yes sir, used the same recipe that Hoop posted. Not much to it, just have to experiment until you get the seasoning balance just right. Use more garlic powder than you'd think you'd need, is what I found. Colleen doesn't care for skin-on chicken, so rather than a whole fryer pieced out, I used thighs and tenders. Also used some panko bread crumbs in the flour mix. Season the mix, too. Buy some hearty sandwich rolls, and top with some cole slaw. 10 out of 10.

Hattie’s was a top pick for me up there, along with the Juice Bar. At Hattie’s, I always had the fried green tomatoes.

Sorry y’all won’t be able to get together for a great day of racing. Taking some shots in a few stakes given pace scenarios but think the Travers truly is a 2 horse race. Will be watching from the lake and best of luck all.
