Day 17 Surprisingly JolyB did not go with Bean Counter ($4.70) in the third and I’m sure he will be seeking revenge on me for even suggesting that was his former occupation. day running.
Touche, Bev. I'm sure that I could think up some equally clever riposte, but I'm just too tired after coping with a power outage that lasted from last Tuesday afternoon until late last night. What had been predicted as just a minor tropical storm ended up containing some microbursts that knocked down many trees and power wires and caused more than 1,000,000 customers here in CT to lose power. Restoration statewide has been very slow, although we have received some much appreciated aid from line workers from a number of states and even Canada.
As to Bean Counter, I can only say that I do not now, nor have I ever counted beans as a profession or even a hobby. Heck, I don't even grow them in our garden. I won't confess to former occupation, since it might be held in even higher disrepute and I don't want to unleash the inevitable round of lawyer jokes.

Day 19
Hay, we’re almost halfway there , and after a third consecutive day of short priced winners , most of the contestants in the Saratoga Cup Classic are living on a prayer. In the opener We Should Talk ($11.20) was probably what jockey Junior Alvarado was saying to his agent , as the unfortunate Junior was the jockey who rode Tiz The Law to his maiden win at Saratoga last year before opting to ride Green Light Go in the Champagne Stakes where Manny Franco rode Tiz The Law to victory and the rest is history. The agent is now laying low on Junior’s farm. The second was a most eventful race with TC’s pick of Classic Colors walking out of the gate While Frankel at Ascot thought he might try the fences by leaping over the guard rail in the stretch leaving Seasons ($3.60) in the sun which added another to SpiderJohn’s tally of winners. With longshot winners totally absent again there was no chance of making a Windfall Profit ($5.30) although Nan53 did improve her bankroll somewhat in the fifth.
Pedalcar upgraded his portfolio balance by investing in the Secondary Market ($14.80) while on a day of financial hunchbets Nan53 doubled up on the day when Spinoff ($8.40) took the feature. So no major movement in the leaderboard to end week four with Bert Convy who has led since day one still at the top but as we know in racing no lead is safe......

Day 20
”The Glorious Twelfth” - opening day of the grouse shooting season in Scotland when the peasants chase the pheasants so that the cast of Downtown Abbey can gleefully shoot them down ( the pheasants that is, although I’m not sure it would have bothered them too much either way). I once was a grouse beater , but I didn’t complain - you just had to hope that the laird of the estate and his guests hadn’t started on the whisky too early. Still it wasn’t as much fun as being a postman but definitely better than being a fish packer which really stunk. But I digress, so let’s jump ahead to the opening race at Saratoga where no one was anticipating that Court Ruler ($27.20) would be fearless enough to garner the win. Joly B was concerned in the second that the trainer’s winless record at the meet so far would detract from his selection but you can now Strike That ($4.90) as the seventeenth time proved the charm for Diodoro.
Daring Disguise ($5.60) , Tied Up ($17.40) and Scanno ($11.40) had no takers in races 3,4 and 5 but the consensus pick of the day Single Verse ($6.30) proved to be poetry in motion for Trapshot, Solidus and Phlier Freak in the sixth. In the seventh 5 Wide thought that A Vow Of Beauty might be a Hail Mary but in fact it was just another loser and in a Microsecond($12.20) another chance had gone but really all you can do is Liveyourbeastlife ($11.20) and see how it turns out. In the contest Propro is on a stalking trip in third place at the moment and he certainly appears to be Thoughtfully ($4.00) choosing his spots with around half his picks still left. In the finale at least NDSC was able to have his aggravation relieved as Gringotts ($10.60) under a wizardly ride by Joel Rosario put on a peerless potter performance.
So at the halfway stage day 1 leader BertConvy is still in charge but after a red hot start has hit a cold spell and the question we are all asking is , can he beat the freeze .....

Day 21
Thursday was National Propro Day or that’s what August 13th will be known as in future for all members of the UIC forum . Crist may have been spotted in the paddock by Hooper but it was Propro who was performing all the miracles on this beautiful day at the Spa. Indeed if it was not for Solidus getting Heirloom Kitten ($8.10) home in the the fourth the rest of our group would have been shut out.
Propro’s big day out when Nutsie ($13.80) Made a clean break to get away in the second while he raised the bar even morely in the third with Xanthique ($19.80) winning the turf war over the heavily favored Olendon. However it was the sixth race of the day which may prove to be the game changer when the longest shot on the board Miss Marissa ($42.20) scented victory on the turn from home under an enterprising ride from Dylan Davis to give Propro a huge three timer.
Our three time claiming contest champion Propro is not one to Bray ($5.60) but after today’s magnificent effort could he become our Newly Minted ($6.20) Saratoga Cup Classic champ. Data Analytics ($11.00) still show long time leader BertConvy on top but stranger things have happened when the winning post is in sight ...

Day 22
Another Friday at the Spa where after a very chalky couple of weeks the tide has definitely turned with long shots galore. If somebody had said to me before the start of the day that Junior Alvarado would ride three winners , Eric Cancel two and the Ortiz brothers and Joel Rosario zero between the three of them I would have asked them what they had been smoking. To be fair none of us stopped for the Flashing Red ($7.70) in the opener or fancied a Tiple ($8.60) in the second but Indypacer and Solidus got the group off the mark on the back of Persian Queen ($7.10) in the third.
Forego had every right to Feel Glorious ($13.60) when winning the fourth but it was after the fifth ,when Ahead of Plan ($6.50) broke a run of 15 losing favorites , that the fun and games really started. First of all Solidus added another winner to his tally when Malibu Pro ($31.20) surfed home in the sixth . In the seventh TimS70 was hoping to be baled out but it was Chazaward who got to the top of Hurricane Hill ($29.80). Nobody likes a Leaky Cup ($8.00) but when it comes to fancy cocktails at Morton’s just Say the Word ($105.00) and Ten Furlongs will be there celebrating for picking the highest priced winner in the contest to date in Friday’s feature.
I will have to check the record books but in the previous thirteen Saratoga Cups I can’t remember seeing so many contestants in triple figures at this stage of the contest. BertConvy still leads but now has three close chasers although he must be relieved to see Propro’s four picks today run like shit...

Day 23
Alabama Day at Saratoga but unfortunately due to the COVID-19 Restrictions all the regular patrons had to spend it at home sweet home. Looking at most of our picks for the day it was probably just as well that none of us were actually at the track as the first five races went by without a winner in sight. I’m not sure what TimS70 had in the sixth as his image did not come through so at the moment only Ozzy ($6.00) was able Calibrate ($6.00) . None of us were Mo Ready ($5.40) in the seventh and as a result of today’s misfortunes the majority may see a cut in Domestic Spending ($16.40) in the week ahead.
Swiss Skydiver ($4.30) put on a show in the feature justifying TimS70 pictorial artwork but there was no support for New York’s Finest ($15.20) as Irad Ortiz Jr. put up a four timer for the day. For years I’ve been saying that the last race of the day is the one to focus on for longshots and it finally paid off for me as the well named Freedom and Whisky ($74.00) gave his trainer his first win at Saratoga since the Summers of 69.
So the day after contest host Ten Furlongs moved into fourth place , contest daily recap-per Cherokee Scot moves into fifth place. Bert Convy still leads and surely he can’t throw it away from here ...

Day 24
Sunday at the Spa and after drawing a blank with all his previous selections Nick Vito decided it was time to get a pizza the action. In the first race however it was the Asmussen / Santana duo who were on song with another smart two year old as Cantata ($4.40) impressed the large honking crowd on the steps on Nelson Avenue. Joly B thought it was time to Seize the Hay in the second but he would have been better off with a Chocolate Bar ($8.10) instead. Officer Hutchy ($19.20) was the STAR in the third but it was the fourth race when Nick Vito got started with SKY Kitten ($37.00) who also had NDSC and Sounds of Saratoga playing “the other Donk” angle.
Nick Vito had the Winning Factor ($19.60) again in the seventh and his donking good day got even better when JC’s Shooting Star ($22.20) made it trebles all round for jockey, trainer and handicapper in the eighth. Antoinette ($12.00) stuck her neck out and won by a head in the feature but only Bitowisdom was eating cake in our group while in the finale it was sadly another Southern Bridge ($10.80) too far.
So with five weeks in the books Day 1 leader BertConvy is still in front but there is now a growing group behind him waiting for any power slip by the front runner and the ultimate winner remains a bit of a puzzle....... (Strong language warning)

Day 25
Week 6 at the Spa started with a thunderstorm but although the main track started muddy the turf races fortunately stayed on course. Cherokee Scot was so peeved when he discovered that TimS70 had sneaked ahead of him into fifth place that he made the Snap Decision ($3.80) to select the surest winner on the card and his confidence was duly rewarded after the first race . Spanky may still be waiting for his but Beetlebomb received his Stimulus Check ($12.20) after the second but we were all left hanging when Chad took the training title lead when Ingrassia ($3.00) proved to be the best entry in the third.
Majid ($6.30) did the deed in the fourth while Abiding Star ($14.20) was willing to speed to upset the financial system in the fifth. Jacckk8 is now just outside the top ten after In Front ($8.40) finished in front in the sixth moving Ten Furlongs a little closer to the top of the leaderboard. Our group drew a blank for the rest of the card so BertConvy leads for the 25th day and the question I am asking Bert is “Tell me can you feel it ? ”

Day 26
After 26 days of this marathon, man I’m struggling to come up with some new material. Especially on days like today when as luck would have it favorites won six of the nine races and even when our group did pick a winner the little fockers paid out next to nothing. So I’m dustin off my old recaps and hopefully we will see an outbreak of longshots over the weekend to spice things up. After the opener no one was Rashaan ($18.00) to the windows and we can also be Thankful ($3.60) that we stayed Out of Trouble ($3.80) in races two and three. Forego was pleased to see Threepointninenine ($4.90) graduate and earn his racing stripes in the fourth while you can be guaranteed that JolyB will always Leaveuwithasmile ($4.90) especially after he chalked up another winner in the fifth.
To highlight our ineptitude our final winner of the day for piets sake man was in the sixth race when Wild William ($11.40) fitted the bill for Arsignman despite being 5 Wide for the whole trip. On a day when it was conclusively proved that Saez does matter we missed out on Stan The Man ($4.70) playing Lead Guitar ($4.70) and even in the finale none of us had a Foolish Ghost ($13.60) of a chance.
It might sound stranger than fiction but not even all the presidents men can fathom why we have the same leader on day 26 as we had on day one but as regards that lead I have one question for Bert Convy .......

Day 27
Friday at the Spa and the hits just keep on coming for horse racing when the start at Saratoga was delayed because of a problem with the Tote program. This happening a day after it was announced that trainer Wayne Potts had been banned from racing at Delaware Park and Laurel for program training for controversial suspended trainer Marcus Vitelli. And guess who trained the winner of the first race ....you got it ..Wayne Potts ! If this story was not ridiculous enough it just so happens that the winner was actually owned by another trainer !! But this matters little to PonyGirl and Triguy as it was happy days for them as the Pottsy trained Our Destiny ($21.00) got them off the duck. Not much action today elsewhere on the track as most of our group were NO POLITICS their time for Saturday and therefore missed out on Aslsham ($5.10) , Golden Pal ($2.90) and Stand Up ($6.30).
Indeed Arsignman was the next winner of the day when Duopoly ($7.70) monopolized the sixth. Opportunities to move up the leaderboard were missed when CathyNaz ($23.00) and Noble Emotion ($22.00) took the seventh and eighth respectively but Forego ended the day nicely with his ninth winner of the contest (only TimS70Ar has more) when Kilkea ($10.20) took the finale.
So no change in the leaderboard with BertConvy maintaining his lead as he has from day one. It’s been a very quiet week so far in the contest but I think we might see something big happen at The Weeknd.....

Day 28
We are now seeing lots of horses making their second appearances at the meet. In the last two days three of my original selections have come back to win but did I pick them this time around -of course not. Will be an angle that I will definitely use next year ! Very few winners to write about on Saturday as our group’s search for long shots proved fruitless on another chalky day . Ampersand ($5.70) started the trend of short prices and although Macho Jack ($10.20) and Fast Getaway ( $11.60) were not the favorites in races two and three they still did not merit a pick. Super Dude ($3.90) was first in the fourth while Nautilus ($7.40) duly sunk his rivals in the fifth. It’s not often that you see claiming races on the card at Saratoga on a Saturday but that didn’t bother Central Exit ($5.50) who broke her maiden in the sixth.
The seventh was taken off the turf resulting in a four horse field but we still couldn’t find a winner as Kingmeister ($4.90) reigned. Sea Foam ($13.40) was a legit winner of the eighth as thankfully Trapshot got our group off the mark for the day. The Four Star Dave saw all four Chad Brown runners finish off the board which was a pleasing sight for Bobtailnag as his pick Halladay ($12.60) went wire to wire. In the finale Letterman ($8.20) closed proceedings with a battalion of our picks close behind.
So no change in the leaderboard as we enter the final day of week 6 with day 1 leader Bert Convy still ....

Day 29 (Hello Muddah , Hello Faddah 2020 edition)
Hello Muddah , Hello Faddah I’m back again at Saratoga With no fans it’s kinda boring But my head does feel much better in the morning
I went hiking with Richard Migliore We both developed poison ivy You remember Chad Brown That Pletcher kid is trying to take his training crown
All the stewards hate the bettors And Lake George has alligators This year we don’t have Larry’s Picks The campers have to light their fires with sticks
Now I don’t want this to scare ya But Andy Serling picked a winna You remember Mark Casse They’re about to organize a searching party
Take me home oh Muddah Faddah Take me home I hate Saratoga Don’t leave me out in the stretch where I might get eaten by a bear
Wait a minute it’s stopped raining Jockeys are swimming , owners are sailing The handle is up , that’s so much better Muddah , faddah please disregard this letter

Day 30
As we enter week Seven of the meet I first must apologize to Trapshot and JolyB whose winners on Sunday were omitted from the daily recap due to a last minute editorial decision. Since those were the only two successes on the day I decided to go in a different direction from normal with the recap. However Trapshot can now Uncork The Bottle ($17.00) and JolyB can celebrate the Allied Invasion ($6.80) now that their names are finally in print.
In the opener French Light ($3.50) may have been a Sheppard’s delight but none of us were in for a slice of the pie. Indeed it would be fair to Assume ($3.00) that in the race to Dash to the Top ($7.30) of the leaderboard it was not a great day for our group Dippin In ($16.60) although 5Wide did correctly predict that Mark Casse would finally break his duck but sadly it was not with that Old Chestnut.
Just when it looked as if we might be blanked out for the first time this year Ten Furlongs saved our bacon when his selection went Sweet Bye and Bye ($8.70) in the eighth . However we definitely saved the best for last as Madam Maclean ($26.20) put in a bombshell performance to land the finale for the numerical cousins 5Wide and NDSC32.
No change at the top of the leaderboard although Ten Furlongs edged closer to the top three with his win today. BertConvy will no doubt be glad all over if he can hang on to his lead but meanwhile he will just have to keep singing.......

Day 31
Just when you thought things could not get any worse a morning deluge at Saratoga resulted in all the races coming off the turf and field sizes decimated. With seven of the nine races producing winners paying out $6.50 or less you can imagine that there is not much to write home about.
Along with most of America we all missed out on an After Prom Party ($10.00) in the opener but Arsignman at least was well prepared for an Empire of War ($6.50) in the third. The rest of the card was as forgettable as an Adam Sandler movie although I’m sure Sounds of Saratoga and Nick Vito were dancing in the streets (where permitted) when Malibu Mischief ($4.10) took the finale .
So no change in the leaderboard although I’m pleased to say that Bert Convy did send me this video to share with his fellow competitors....

Day 32
The second last Friday of the meet as we continued along with Captain Bombastic ($3.30) on this seemingly Timeless Journey ($6.60) only for Nick Vito to be Rejected Again ($6.60) before Ten Furlongs had the sense to exit Stage Left ($3.60) after the fourth race , heading to a Party at Page’s ($3.00) anticipating a Lady Rocket ($8.80) when he got Back to his Roots ($10.20) as Night Time ($24.00) , another Nick Vito winner , set in.
Meanwhile it’s still pay day for BertConvy and his daily increasing number of admirers....

Day 33
Happy Travers Day and for once the gods of 2020 were on our side as it would have definitely been a wet blanket for our group if it had gone ahead as planned. It might have been a day for the ducks but Cindy Lou Jazz got off hers in some style at the thirty second attempt when Grey Jazmine ($35.80) shocked both the fans and the mejia in the opener. En Wye Cee ($3.70) who initially was all set for the turf took the second in the slop while Cruzan rocketed to sixth place in the tournament when Bye Bye Melvin ($41.00) was able to motion through the mud fastest in the third. Nothing to write about in the next two races as I was Tied Up ($4.40) and Let Me Take This Call ($4.40) proved the chalk backers correct. Joly B was highly motivated in the sixth while Madame Blum and Beetlebomb had nerves of steel but sadly they all saw their hopes Founder ($14.80) . In the seventh Grommet had to WonderwhereCraig is and the answer was about 30 lengths behind Yaupon ($4.80)
For Trapshot and GAM the eighth was a foregone conclusion as all their horse had to do was WinWinWin ($16.20). Triguy decided that studying the weather forecast was probably more rewarding than looking at the pps as Channel Maker ($8.00) took advantage of the monsoon conditions to win the feature. Spun D’Etat ($7.00) out jousted his main rival to take the tenth and Jacckk8 thought he had ended his tournament with a winner when Bustin Scones ($17.80) took the finale for Amira Chichakly but he had a scratch today so has one bullet left and can still win it if he gets a 70-1 shot home 😜
Today saw the final picks of Cruzan , TimS70Ar and Solidus1 who at present are all in the top ten and cannot catch day one leader Bert Convy whose Saturday song is ...
