This $3.65 million Curlin colt makes his debut at Santa Anita on Saturday for Bob Baffert . Here’s hoping he makes a good impression.

The lack of transparency is unacceptable to me. Am I wrong, as a huge fan of horse racing, and mostly of the horses who run for us in this sport, to think that every horse matters? After Jon Stettin posted in past the wire, I guess the other racing publications got on the ball. Did anyone pick up the phone to pletcher and ask for the date? Anyone? No. Cezanne was Triple Crown nominated in 2020, along with Swiss Skydiver, King Guillermo, and others......a Curlin colt, trained by Bob Baffert, who ran 4 Graded Stakes races, 200K to $400K purses, as well as a non-graded stakes, with a record of 7-4-1-1-, whose last race was April 2022........and we are not hearing about his death til now? 5 months after his last race?. Cezanne's fans were not even INFORMED that the horse died. Not a peep from the horse racing universe. I understand that horses are private property, but once you have a horse who is TC nomminated, and has run in graded stakes races, there are those *pesky entities* called "fans" and "bettors"........ who want to know the health of a horse they folllowed or may have wagered on. Fans who place wagers are what supports the sport. And, it goes w/out mentioning, Cezanne himself certainly deserved a timely RIP. Including his date born, and date died. We do know that the horse took ill in June. So about a month after his last race. It's now the end of September. Not one publication has made it clear when he died? This article was sent to me on Sept. 17th: Jon set the twitter universe talking: pastthewire.com/the-mysterious-fate-of-3-6-million-dollar-horse-cezanne/Next came the Johnny-come-latelys (i.e. the major racing publications): TDN reported it on Sept. 20th. The article also didn't report a date of euthanization. www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/cezanne-euthanized-due-to-fungal-infection/ Horse Racing Nation didn't report it til Sept. 21 and they also didn't include the date of his euthanization. www.horseracingnation.com/news/Report_Cezanne_is_euthanized_because_of_infection_123Bloodhorse report on Sept 20th, also did not give a date, just said once the horse was transferred to Pletcher while Baffert was serving his suspension, the horse didn't race again (June) due to a lung infection. www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/263352/report-cezanne-euthanized-after-fungal-infectionI went thru a similar experience with Classic Moment, who raced in a Triple Crown prep race, the Sunland Derby, and was vanned off. Of course I wanted to know his status, as I had been following the Classic Empires last year. Nothing reported that week. Then the next week. Then a month later, I finally called Sunland and was at least told the horse had not been euthanized, (whew!) and now I see he is working again. WE SAW THIS HORSE in a ky derby prep race and we can't even get an article about his status after he is vanned off? I had some correspondence with some over-the-pond horse racing fans, they thought this was all very *unusual*. So when was Cezanne euthanized. June, July, Aug, Sept? there is still no date.

"Why the hush hush surrounding Cezanne? Is there litigation requiring secrecy? Is there an insurance claim requiring no public comments?"
These were my initial thoughts as well but I have zero clue how horse insurance works.

I have zero clue how horse insurance works. Neither do I. My point wasn't to suggest anything nefarious. My point is, and always will be, that transparency, keeping track records on horses, establishing codes of practice, etc. are what the racing public deserves, none of which should be viewed as entitlements.

The mortality insurance premium on a racehorse costs about 5% of its value so the annual premium on Cezanne would have been $182,500. I would imagine that the insurers would be looking at any way possible of not paying out so possibly that’s the major reason for the lack of news on the subject
