They will be picking them up and laying them down today in Grand Island, Nebraska as Fonner Park kicks off its 67th season. Always a harbinger of spring. Temperatures are supposed to be in the 50 - 60 degree range.
Full fields and large crowds with mostly horses coming off layoffs who are getting ready for the later meets at Canterbury, Prairie Meadows and Arapahoe. Bet the winter raced horses early in the meet as they have a huge advantage and the guys who have shipped in are looking to strike early.
Great place to visit if you ever get the chance. They have a happy hour special this year where you get a mini pizza, two beers and a $5 wagering voucher for $10. Can’t go wrong.

Handle at Fonner is about $1.5m with one race to go on their first Monday card. Terrible circumstances but couldn’t happen to a more deserving track.

Wouldn't they need over 4 million in handle to perhaps break even considering it's all money bet off track? It's always been SO wrong that the organization that takes the wager gets to keep nearly all the takeout from it while the track that's running the race only gets what...1.5 or 2 percent of that money? If they did 1.6 million and only get $32,000 from that wagering, that doesn't cover the purses for the day.
The hope for Fonner Park and the Nebraska horsemen is that the bettors that played their track for the first time yesterday enjoyed it and go back to it in the future when there are other options.

Thanks largemac. I forgot that Chris Kotulak went there after being the on air guy at Remington Park for years.

Thanks largemac. I forgot that Chris Kotulak went there after being the on air guy at Remington Park for years. I wondered what happened to him. I liked his understated but yet direct delivery with just a touch of dry wit. I thought he was good.

I have always wanted to go to Fonner. And, I will eventually. I like the small tracks and am happy to support them.

That big whoop you heard from up North was Small and I when they DQ’d the 7. Sorry to Mattcoll but that was pretty egregious.
2,6,7,9 2,6 2,3,5,7 2,3,5,7,8 3,4,9
We play for $0.60 so the cost was $288.

They certainly made the correct call....although I wasn't sure they were going to make it. Helped me out with a much better exacta and had a small win bet.

Ouch! That 14-1 shot trained by Assiniboia Downs’ leading trainer in 2018 would have made this more interesting. Oh well...staying alive

I'm not complaining that he got caught. :-) I had to cut two runners from my ticket and originally had three of them out. I added back in the winner of the 4th but that left me cutting your runner up in the 6th and the really gutsy mare Chub's Charmer (#8) here in the 7th. If we both get through this one, we have the same three in the finale.

I’ve been wondering if Tampa couldn’t do something like that. Definitely a void to be filled currently. Heck, Oaklawn could extend also, for that matter.

Another pick-5 jackpot forced distribution today at Fonner Park. Pretty tough sequence so far.

Going to venture another guess: CD will begin racing by Memorial Day weekend, probably without fans, to start. Less optimistic about Belmont because of NYC being one of the worst hit areas, but I think Saratoga will open as well, maybe even a week or two earlier than originally scheduled. I think if fans are permitted it will be on a limited basis to allow distancing on the grounds.
