Day 1 is in the books and I found the following scoreboard results for players that many of us know well.
Greg Knepper 48th (Former UIC contributor and good friend of mine for 30 years since the WSH at Penn. Nat. in the 90's) Tony Calabrese (TC) 67th Darryl Mays 128th + 311th (Good friend of Eddie Wright who we met as he sat with the UIC contingent at the HPWS the last few years)
Eric Kurzhal (ELK) 129th Eddie Wright (Wrightstuff) 144th + 193rd Scott Carson 164th (Owner/Creator of Publichandicapper and another great guy who sat at the UIC table with us the last few years)
These are some solid results for Day 1 when one keeps in perspective how many players they have put behind them! There are a total of 694 entries. Good luck moving forward gentlemen!

Good luck gents!

Missed the cut by $3.00 over 36 $2 win/place bets... Crazy string of 3rds on Friday at big prices proved to much to overcome. The cut line is an odd dynamic...

That's brutal ELK, and I know that kind of pain too. I once missed the cash at the HPWS by $1.80 in mutuel return after 45 W/P bets of $20.00 each!

We had a player from Toronto at our table, Ken Zelin, miss the cut at the just concluded NHC by 20cents. That is after 36 selections and 2 days. Needless to say, he was heart broken. Who wouldn't be?
For me, this NHC will always be defined by ADMIRALTY PIER. Not because of the razor thin margin of victory, not because of the non DQ but because of my 2nd guessing of my initial selection in that mandatory race. In hindsight, from a game strategy perspective it was a terrible mistake to switch to DEVAMANI in that race. In a situation where you have to choose who to play, after narrowing down the field, ALWAYS PLAY THE HIGHER PRICED ONE. ALWAYS.
I've played enough tourneys to know this basic rule yet in the heat of the action I let myself forget it. I just went with who I thought was the more likely winner of the 2 without truly considering the odds. ADMIRALTY PIER was 21/1 while DEVAMANI was 5/1. A rookie mistake by somebody who should know better.
I'm hoping that I will not forget this hard learned lesson and that it will make me a better contest player moving forward. I must always remember ADMIRALTY PIER and DEVAMANI.

That's tough TC and for much different and much less critical outcome I sweated out that inquiry too. I boxed the 2,3 in exactas and played the 3 W/P so risked the shutout depending on the stewards. We all take winners off the table at times but I wish it worked out better for you this time.

Tony , I was at the rail on the finish line and everybody thought Devamani had won . Then there was a long delay with the objection as Camacho was tossed from the winner on the back stretch and walked most of the way back before they caught up with the horse and he remounted.

Appreciate your insight, Bev. Seemed every bit of a 10+ minute inquiry and I for one, don't think it's a good thing when it takes that long. Thought for sure my 3 was coming down. Was unaware of the mishap with Camacho. I trust he is all right.

Just starting to unwind from a fun but exhausting weekend at Bally's. Was great to meet George, Darryl, and Don who some of you probably know from the HPWS. Also nice to see TC again and catch up a bit.
Overall I'm pretty happy with how things went, even though they fell short of how I hoped. $189.4 after two days was just short of the cut, but picking up the top spot in the Horsetourneys cash game Saturday was a nice consolation prize. Just squeaked into the money at 19th of 600 or so in the consolation tourney with $84.2. Had I made the cut, the 3 day total of 273.6 would have been good enough for 13th. Probably wouldn't have played the same, and maybe some others who just missed did well too. But... I do feel more confident and experienced than after my terrible results in my first 4 tries. Looking forward to hopefully getting back and giving it another run.
Bally's overall was pretty good. The contest room and atmosphere were great. Breakfast and lunch buffets were pretty good. Rooms were better than expected. you can tell a bit that they were refreshed older rooms, but they are spacious and comfortable. Casino is a bit smokey and small with low ceilings, but just a short walkway over to Paris for a much nicer feel. There were some little issues along the way, but they seemed to address them from day to day.

Just looking at the scores more and catching up on the Tgraph board... The 40-1 in the late mandatory at GG on Saturday was my 2nd choice and looked great on tgraph. I was right around the bubble and decided to play my first choice who was the favorite. If I had gone agressive instead of being conservative and trying to cash, that would have been the play, adding $64 to my total would be put me at $337.60 and in 2nd place going into the final table...

YUP. I, too, got too conservative on Saturday. The lesson for me is that you absolutely need to stay aggressive throughout the tourney. Can't just try to make the cut. Need to play longshots, especially ones you like a little, every single time. You may end up with a low score if you are wrong but you absolutely have no chance to win the whole thing by straying from price horsies. That is the optimal game strategy in this environment. It is the same thing in poker...aggression pays off in the long run.

In case anybody is interested...the NTRA has just released all selections made by all NHC participants over the entire NHC weekend tourney. You can find the info: www.ntra.com/nhc2020/I have to say that I totally support this initiative of releasing all contest selections made by all players. Transparency is king!
