Someone at the network may have misspoken, ziggy. I know some tracks have cancelled both days but with no announcement on the NYRA site, I doubt the accuracy at this point.

Just to put this to bed:
Saratoga has cancelled racing for SATURDAY JULY 20. (5PM temp- 93, dew point- 75 = heat index 105)
Saratoga is scheduled to resume racing SUNDAY JULY 21. (5PM temp- 90, dew point- 70 = heat index 96)
Looks like a little bit less humid through the day on Sunday, and a few degrees cooler, so it shouldn't trigger their excessive heat protocols (forecast heat index of 105 or greater). Weather such as Sunday occurs here every racing season. Saturday is definitely abnormal and potentially dangerous.

My apologies but I figured they knew when they said the 'weekend' was canceled and the temps here are almost identical both days so it made sense. Even a slight drop in temp or humidity isn't that much better for the horse if they're canceling today. A 4 degree temp and 3% humidity drop and racing's a go? I just feel bad for the horses. I remember one hot day a long time ago a stakes horse collapsed from the heat BEFORE the race. Things like that just make it seem like the hprse doesn't matter.
LOL I'm just too hot here (feels like 110 today, MD) and thought it was nearly as bad up there. And last time I trust the 'news' ;-). I would have double checked but NYRA seems a bit slow. One race yesterday had wagers listed as canceled before the scratched went up, so they knew horses were out but we'll just let the fans wait.

Is that a record high for Saratoga?

Record highs for the two nearest reporting stations for July 20th:
Albany- 97 in 1991 (just south of Saratoga Springs)
Glens Falls- 97 in 1946 (just north of Saratoga Springs)
It is the very high moisture content of the air (measured by the dew point) that is primarily causing the excessive heat issues. Upstate New York rarely sees mid-upper 70s dew points, unlike areas in the southeast-midwest which often get Gulf of Mexico moisture-laden air masses throughout the summer. I noticed yesterday that Newburgh, NY, which is located about 60 miles north of NYC, had a temperature of 90 and a dew point of 81 at one report. That's brutal for this region!

Just got back to the room at The Georgian Resort after spending the last 7 hours at (and mostly in) the pool. With a bit of a breeze and staying hydrated I sense that the worst is behind us. NYRA certainly made the right call!
