Hi Folks... we had our first attempt by some knucklehead to post porn on the site last night. It was up for 20 minutes before I saw it and deleted the post. The poster was a "Guest." I apologize to anyone who read the prurient post. It won't happen again, as I have re-set and restricted access to posting on the forum to MEMBERS ONLY. Here's another FYI: "www.UPINCLASS.com" has been renewed for another year, so when you invite new players to join the forum tell them to come to UPINCLASS.COM. They will automatically be re-directed to this proboards online platform. Thank you!

What is to keep someone from registering and then post something they shouldn’t ?
Is there any way you can set it up so people can peruse the forum to decide if they want to join?

Nothing, really... adding the extra step of registering and logging-in should reduce the risk of bots posting on the forum, but you are right... if someone is determined to post inappropriate content/links to ads and such - they can do it. When they do, we'll take 'em down. Just making it more difficult.

As it is now you have to join even if you just want to see what the forum has to offer.... could be a deterrent to people who don’t know the site...
Sometimes I just want to come browse ...

I can change it back... all opinions are welcomed and appreciated. Trying to see if I can make posting for members only, while still allowing the rest of the world to see the forum.
LOOKING FOR INPUT FROM UPINCLASS MEMBERS... what do you think?

One vote to change it back. If it happens repeatedly maybe put a change in effect. Seems we have been deleting inappropriate posts like this in a timely fashion in the past thanks to administrators and stewards. Hooper

Is this the first time something like this happened going all the way back to the Bloodhorse Forum? If this is the first time the odds are that it might not happen again for a looong time. I notice that almost all the sites I participate in require members to sign up. Can anyone think of a single reason why anyone who wants to participate in our forum would not want to sign up?

I agree with Hooper. Whatever it was can’t be much more offensive than most of the stuff posted in the basement nowadays. Signing in every time is a hassle

It really depends on how much extra work it creates for the admin. I don't mind the hassle of signing in IF it gets to the point that it causes the Admin a lot of extra work. If it just happens rarely in a cluster event, then probably not a problem.
For now I will just go along with whatever everybody else wants.

I wonder if there needs to be action at this time? I am wondering if we just wait and see where it goes from here to see how much of an issue it’s going to be.

Not a great degree of spamming here, as far as I see though it happens everywhere I don't open things like that, or read them. As mentioned, nbd compared to other things that we read here---interesting what rankles others and is "important"
Place was more enjoyable when we had horseplaying and sports wagering prevalent

I always sign in from my laptop where information is saved. I don't if I check from my phone (in part because I'm always unclear on my password and it doesn't automatically generate from my phone). I support whatever the decision is though I'd lean toward giving it one more chance for guests.

I've always been against allowing a guest to post.(nothing different now) Reading the content and making a decision as to join or not does not restrict their opportunity to enjoy the content. Should they want to join the conversation, simple matter to register, As to signing in, really that big of a problem? Come on people. A minute out of our lives. Cost of throwing the bull.

Depending on the permissions you've set, guests can read topics on your forum and even participate by posting. If you would like to prevent guests from posting on your forum, visit your Admin Panel and click the the "Categories & Boards" link. For each board that you want to restrict posting on, make sure that "Who can create threads" and "Who can reply to threads" for each board are set to "Members & Staff" in the board's permissions. If you would like to prevent guests from viewing topics on this board, set the "Who can access" option to "Members & Staff".

I think you should be a member to post. That's par for most courses I play, and being as this is an upinclass site I'd think we'd want to know who's who, as friends with class(for the most part). So I'd say make someone register and become a member before posting. Unless they have the secret password: 10billioncanons.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/1099626125.jpg. Seriously, best to be pro-active here before it becomes a problem. Having a guest have the ability to post an image like the one above which is http, not https secure, effects the google ranking.

Thank you to everyone who replied... I appreciate you! And thanks to eye for explaining how to fix the problem.
CHANGE MADE TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE UNWANTED POSTS: "You need to login or register on this forum to post." The world can read the forum. Only members can post & reply to threads.
I believe this should fix the problem.

Wow, this is getting complicated. The old days are gone. We won’t get them back, just like most of the original people that used to be part of this.
Getting ‘political’ here.
I’m feeling like we are getting uppityinclass.

I don't think it's being uppityinclass. It's keeping up with the times. Things were different back in the day. They were at their best the best, open to all as the Internet was designed. Now we have something called bots(not quite sure what they are but my mom would call them good for nothings). They effect google rankings, which are important in growing the site to all, classy or not. .
I recall a time when the main weather blog site was a free-for-all. It was fun and no big problem happened. Then in 2005 Katrina was about to hit New Orleans, and the blog was faced with numerous spoofers which distracted from the main issue to convince folks in the ninth ward to evacuate. Those nogoodniks literally cost some folks their lives. Here, we talk about horses racing, so it's not a life or death matter. But, the site could use some new blood. Being higher up(not to be snooty:) in the google rankings can't hurt.

Allowing non members to post does bring in trolls and bots. That's just reality these days. I can't post on any forums w/out signing in.

Deleted and banned "Jane" and "Janes" moments ago. He, she or it took the time to join the forum twice, then posted BEST MEDS commercial... so, buh-bye Jane.
Additionally, note that several posts from Russia have been deleted in the last few weeks... interesting.

Any chance of creating a separate Sports section in the forum ? I don’t visit the basement anymore because I found the political discourse not to be worthy of the name of this forum . As we get nearer to the 2020 election I cannot imagine that dialogue will get any more respectful on the political front and it would be good to have a place where you can be safe from the vitriol that this generates.

I have to disagree. Since becoming a member here there has always been "Spanky's Sports Basement" . (and if you check it out Spanky is responsible for posting better then 90% of sporting topics) Be selective in what you want and read, ignore the others. Pretty reasonable way to participate in any forum.

Unfortunately many of the “sports” threads eventually deteriorate into political diatribes catching everyone in the crossfire.

My proposal would be to merge the Breeders Cup and Triple Crown sections . Have a separate Sports section and the other stuff can be posted in Music, Movies & Opinion.

I don't think Dell should be put in a situation where he has to make a decision on this. Would think the proper course would be for you (Bev) to ask Spanky if this is ok with him. If he agreed, can't think of any objections by anyone else. Spanky should be consulted first.
